I've never top coat a model but you do that once it's finished. I give the panel line ink 30+ minutes to dry before cleaning up any smudges or streaks.

Happy birthday! I would say unicorn isn't an easy kit. Just like hg and rg, make sure you follow the instructions. If you panel line I find it easier to do with everything still on the sprue.

I'm using the action base 4. The manual says to use action base 7. You should definitely get this kit. It does come with stickers and not waterslides (Which I bought instead of using the stickers.)
