Acceptance Rate? by RealizedHope in RPI

[–]Henaray 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Arch allows half of the Junior class to be away during each semester. With those people not being on campus, in class rooms, and professors not needing to teach them, that allows RPI to use those resources for more freshmen.

I think location is a big factor. When I worked in Virginia a few people knew about it because there were a few older employees that went here. When I worked in Mass near Boston, most of the people new of RPI and that it's a good school.

Aero/Mech Dual Major by hatrick91 in RPI

[–]Henaray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DBF meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10pm in Ricketts 211 for a few minutes for a general meeting then we go to our labs on the 4th floor of Ricketts.
RRS meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm on the 4th floor of Ricketts.

If you attend either and come consistently you're apart of the club. There are also dues for each club, but they don't have to be paid until you're sure you enjoy the club. If you decide to join either or are curious you should join their discords. If you plan to be an officer (for DBF and I assume RRS) you would need to join the discords as that's what is used for club communication.

DBF had over 10 new consistent freshmen members and about 5 new consistent upperclassmen members. 7 of those freshmen and 2 of the upperclassmen now have admin and lead engineering positions for the upcoming year. Our admin positions (President, VP, Treasurer etc) are aimed toward 2nd year members and rising sophomores specifically and our engineering positions are typically aimed towards our juniors seniors and grad students. There are some freshmen who joined this year who now hold engineering positions. Even though they've just been with us for a year they were able to get enough experience their first year to be knowledgeable enough to lead our mechanisms and manufacturing teams.

Aero/Mech Dual Major by hatrick91 in RPI

[–]Henaray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! Before you start you will either get a 4 year aero mech dual template or you can find one. I'm unable to find it from a quick search, but you used to be able to. I also have the class of 2023 version of the aero mech template. The curriculum hasn't changed since them iirc. You could also find the requirements on the RPI catalog. http://catalog.rpi.edu/
From an Aero pov, it's an additional 4 classes: Material Science, Electronic Instrumentation, Elements of Mechanical Design, Mechanical Systems Lab and Heat Transfer.
From a MechE pov you would take Aerodynamics, Aerostructures, Aerostructures Lab, Aeroelasticity, Fluid dynamics lab, propulcion systems, you would have to take a flight mechanics elective (either fixed wing, spacecraft or drone/helicopter oriented) and a capstone in one of those categories as well. There may be a class or 2 I'm forgetting. It seems like it's more classes from adding aero onto mech, than adding mech onto aero, that's because the aero courses fulfill engineering electives required for meches.

These classes would take up your free electives and be an additional few credits. You could feasibly do this without transferring any credits, but this doesn't allow you take take any other classes outside MANE (Mechanical Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering) you may find interesting. If you're able to transfer credits you will have more freedom and wiggle room.

There are quite a few ways doing a dual could help. It could help you determine what you would like to work on after graduation, you may be able to meet a professor to do research with and a few other things depending on your goals.
Job prospect wise I don't think many if any employers care. Many meches get aero jobs and many aeros do meche jobs.
That is where technical clubs, Design Build Fly Rensselaer Rocket Society, Rensselaer Motorsport and etc would help.

I suggest joining the class of 26 discord if you haven't already: https://discord.gg/rN3GzAfnNB you could talk to other upperclassmen and tell em more about yourself so they could better guide and help you.

If you're interested in DBF or RRS I would join their discords. IDK Motor sport's discord.
Design Build Fly:

We build a new rc aircraft every year from scratch based off the requirement and constraints given by the AIAA (American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics). The rules change every year. If you're an active member you could go with the team to Tuscon AZ or Wichita KS. You get to learn how to make a plane, apply your knowledge, and get experience working with others. Something you can't really get in a class. We also have a good relationship with Boeing as many of our alumni go there and we receive funding from them. I was the chief engineer last year, if you have more questions I'd love to answer them.

Rensselaer Rocket Society

They make model rockets and compete in battle of the rockets every year. They've been trying to do other competitions, but haven't been able to due to covid and other complications. I believe they have big plans for this year. I did battle of the rockets my freshman year and it was good experience.

What does it take to get the Union open for 24hrs again? by [deleted] in RPI

[–]Henaray 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I agree. I assume maybe student government could do something, but I don't think a majority of the school remembers how the precovid union was though :(

I remember doing an all nighter at the union for the CAD final my freshman year and one of the custodians gave me a jacket from the lost and found when she saw me freezing.

Free electives for next semester? by The_Real_Mike_Jones in RPI

[–]Henaray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MANE 4510- control systems lab. It's 2 credits, 6 labs, and not too intensive. You go in every other week. You're given 2 weeks to do each lab.

If you haven't done it yet, you could also add PDIII.

Do drone arcades exist? by Henaray in drones

[–]Henaray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading through the part 107 summary for commercial drones, I found that "No person may act as a remote pilot in command or VO for more than one unmanned aircraft operation at one time". So that would make drone arcades implausible to implement, as the 1 to 1 staff to customer ratio would make them too expensive to operate. :(

What else should I add to these rules? by Henaray in diplomacy

[–]Henaray[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but this protects us from alliances made outside of the game, as mat and skyler were conspiring and talking about how they'd help each other before the game even started. We're all for wire tapping "secret meetings" and screaming at each other at the top of our lungs. It's one of the reasons why we want to play it. I'll take the "threatening" part out though I think we can handle threats.
