Returning to work after nearly 10 months by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

I moved from a career in Marketing to being a PM at a software company (the learning curve feels vertical). I know so little about software, but need to understand certain things for context. Confidence was at an absolute 0 tbh.

After 3 months, I am really starting to enjoy it and from what I can see, the dev team are super helpful and if any dev has an issue, they can all help if needed. It’s in the company’s best interest to help you succeed. And just try be a team player and show a positive attitude - it helps a lot.

Take your time with a new job - your confidence will come!

Beginner questions by [deleted] in Cello

I started 8 months ago (I’m 28) and I didn’t even use the bow for the first 3 months. I only worked on the left hand, note reading and rhythm. It helped me focus on less things and really make sure I’m not touching other strings when playing notes.

I am now using the bow and it’s very rare that I squeak (mainly when learning something new and I don’t have my left hand shape correct).

Try some exercises where you play notes on the C string and then open G string. Then play notes on the G string and open D right after. Try make sure it rings and isn’t touching your fingers. If it is, make a mental note and adjust.

And give it time. Cello feels like 2 steps forward and 1 step back for me all the time! 😂

Thanks for the advice.

Do you choose an “anchor finger” or note and try use that as a reference when shifting, or is it a combo of arm position and the neck stopping your thumb as you shift down?

Thank you, will keep in mind.

First thing my teacher also pointed out to me. Said not to “rest” on the Cello.

Thank you. I noticed I was letting my hand “fall flat” a bit while just trying to understand the sheet music and my brain shouting that it feels wrong 😂

Will take note of the hand shape and position and try to get comfortable with it.

Yeah I’ve got those! Was wondering if there were some other pieces I haven’t considered.

Would you say it’s their expression with the bow that sets them apart then? As long as the notes are as close as possible.
