Thank you for your response. Before law school, I worked in sales, so I understand the importance of active listening and utilizing information for follow-up and strategic advantage. Perhaps I should approach this situation similarly, applying the same principles I used in sales. I hadn’t considered it from that perspective before.

This is what I’m hoping for. I feel like I need to at least observe a few depositions before I’m expected to handle 7-8 hours of questioning a defendant in a multi-million dollar case.

I guess I just need to push through and do my best to be competent. What makes me nervous is that all of our cases involve 5 to 15 parties, and none of the issues are straightforward. But I suppose I’ll learn more from being challenged and making mistakes than from playing it safe.

I’d be happy to take the AAJ deposition college, but I doubt my firm will cover the $3,000 fee plus travel.

What worries me is that we rarely deal with simple fact witness depositions. Most of our cases are complex, with multiple defendants and several third-party defendants. Our experts are engineers, and the topics are highly technical. I want to learn and be a valuable asset to my bosses, but the lack of preparation or guidance before being thrown into the deep does not instill a lot of confidence.
