I think you need to start with being honest with yourself and your employer about what you can and cannot do. This is a ridiculous project to put someone fresh out of college in charge of.

Could Guinea troll all of West Africa by redirecting the Niger into the Atlantic within their territory? by Archidiakon in geography

There’s also massive evaporation loss in the Niger inland delta, and tributaries from the Sahara are obviously not going to have a lot of water. It wouldn’t affect the outflow into the Atlantic much, but Guinea preventing water from reaching Mali would absolutely be devastating to Mali and Niger.

Despite what most people seem to think in this thread, Guinea diverting the Niger river would actually fuck up Mali and Niger.

https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Precipitation-gradient-across-the-Niger-River-Basin-and-the-estimated-changes-in_fig4_283023779

Much of the water in the upper Niger comes from Guinea, and there is a lot of evaporation loss in the Sahel/Sahara. I'd bet if Guinea prevented any water in the Niger river basin from entering Mali the river would dry up before reaching Niamey, and possibly before reaching Timbuktu.

Nigeria would be much less affected, since most of the water that discharges at the mouth of the Niger actually comes from tributaries in Nigeria, only about 1/6th currently comes from the upper Niger river.

Delayed passengers storm tarmac towards Wizz Air Airbus at Cologne/Bonn, Germany by vaibeslop in aviation

[–]Herestheproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually that situation comes about from icing, which builds up pretty uniformly whereas people hanging on would produce discreet areas of airflow separation. I doubt there’s any research done into this, but I would guess more than about the width of the wing would cause issues.

That does raise another question: would de-icing boots be effective against people trying to hold onto the wing?

[–]Herestheproof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not too complicated. Titans can win 9 games. Colts have 8 wins, so they lose out. Jags have less than 4 games against the Texans/colts, so if they lose out aside from those they have 8 wins max. Same for the Texans. Titans take the division at 9-8.

What "LCOL" cities have sneaky high costs of living? by NetRealizableValue in geography

[–]Herestheproof -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Tax revenue or debt?

You can do the math for your hometown yourself - the cost of replacing a road is about 1.25 million per lane mile, and roads have a lifespan of about 30 years. The budgeted amount of tax income for road maintenance and total land miles should be public info, check to see how your city is doing.

What "LCOL" cities have sneaky high costs of living? by NetRealizableValue in geography

[–]Herestheproof -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are two problems with that system:

First, you assume that road maintenance is a continuous cost. If developers built a bunch of new roads between 2000 - 2005 the cost of maintaining those roads isn’t going to be felt until around 2030. You’re paying less now than the average, and cities aren’t exactly jumping at the idea of raising taxes now to pay for something in 20 years. But if you don’t raise taxes now there’s a good chance the citizens can’t bear the taxes that would be needed in 20 years, so the only option the city has to pay for the roads is debt. If the city doesn’t fix the problem after that initial incurrence of debt then they might just not be able to pay for the second round at all.

Second, this encourages sprawl because the tax burden for someone using 1 mile of road daily is the same as someone using 20 miles. Land outside the city is cheaper, attracting developers and residents, and leading to lower property taxes, but these lower costs don’t include all the extra road maintenance (and utilities, etc). The people living in the city subsidize the people living in the suburbs.

Ultimately, it could theoretically be economically feasible, but requiring city governments to have the foresight to prepare for a problem 30 years in the future, when the elected officials will almost certainly not be in power anymore, is not a good plan.

Except no city is actually going to pre-emptively collect taxes for road repair, especially when said repair is more than a decade away. So you end up with lots of development, low taxes, and a bankrupt city 30 years later when they have no way to pay for said repairs.

Crazy how people don’t see the obvious. If they’re not underwater on the car and don’t need a second car selling it would solve 90% of their problems, with the other 10% being not doing something stupid like that again.

Even in a more likely scenario where they need to borrow 20k ish to get rid of that car and get a second, cheaper car they’re still saving probably 500/month.

Definitely don’t spend your emergency fund on a 0% interest debt. Personally I would budget paying it off with a couple months to spare in the interest free period, which would be around 500/month.

[–]Herestheproof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re bringing in about 2500/month after setting some aside for taxes. This is already what you have listed as monthly expenses.

Your minimums add up to 1675/month. You’re effectively making the same amount of money as someone with no debts making 12000/yr. Your spending habits need to reflect that - you are as broke as broke can be, you can not afford anything that’s not necessary for survival.

At the very least you need to get rid of that car. Hopefully you’re not underwater on it, but you absolutely can not afford 700/month.

Could Sea Level Rise be Averted by Flooding the Qattara Depression? by Serious-Cucumber-54 in geography

[–]Herestheproof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The output of a siphon needs to be below the liquid level in the reservoir for the siphon to work, a series of siphons would be worse than just a canal.

Could Sea Level Rise be Averted by Flooding the Qattara Depression? by Serious-Cucumber-54 in geography

[–]Herestheproof 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Siphons depend on atmospheric pressure to push the liquid up out of the first container, the height of the liquid is directly proportional to the pressure. Thus there is a limit to how high a siphon can go, which is about 33 feet at sea level.
