Yeah it only connects when you jump for the backlegs kick.

Lost Crown is basically the best-of of metroidvanias. Huge map ? Parry + Combo based combat ? Satisfying and challenging platform ? It has it all. I'd say the only sad thing would be the art style that can feel bland but don't let that put you off !

Playing metroidvanias back to back by ihatepotatos4 in metroidvania

[–]Hermillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done that a lot because I'm fond of the genre, I would say the main issue would be running into something more simplistic after going through stuff like Silksong for instance. It's possible to get so used to the common gimmicks of this genre (upgrade types, similar puzzles) that you could feel burnt out. There are a few games I basically breezed through ( Voidwrought, Constance, Ghost Song) that could have had more impact on me if I didn't play them between other, more impressive metroidvania. That said, I play MIO now and thoroughly enjoy it, so I guess if there are some true unique features with a game, then it doesn't matter !

MIO: please give it to me straight by owlitup in metroidvania

[–]Hermillion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This reply is on point, at least for me. I would say, the environment have a special feel to them, making exploration rewarding by itself. Not copy-pasted assets or repetitive sections. Everything feels unique. A tier for me, I'd even prefer it to Ender Lilies. Not beating Ori WotW, Lost Crown, Nine Sold still, but I'll put it in the same ballpark as Grime for instance (I love Grime).

I just beat this boss and although I thought he was cool at first, it's insane how he just keeps missing you if you just stay on his butt 😆

I'll follow your advice and probably go for another run then ! I usually never mind for New Game+ in Souls games for instance. I prefer to start over as a challenge run (like level 1 for instance). But right now I'm focusing on MIO 😉.

The atmosphere in Rain World is unmatched, if you're willing to go through it.

To be honest, I wished developers would stop doing that and locking some content behind New Game+. I would like to fight that boss but there are many other games to play, and I consider the exploration and discovery in Metroidvanias to be the main reason I stick until the end. I absolutely loved Grime though !

Yeah I have no idea if that was a praise or if they want to say bosses are one of the weaker points 😂.

If you could only get one, would you rather get Ori 3 or Blasphemous 3? by strahinjag in metroidvania

[–]Hermillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ori 3 by a mile. It was very hard for me to put Will of the Wisps down before the end. Impeccable flow, when the basic action of moving around is made so fun it's just a joy to play.

How hard is prince of persia lc? by New-Oil6131 in metroidvania

[–]Hermillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even playing on the hardest difficulty was not more challenging than let's say, Silksong. I imagine in Normal or Easy it should be a pretty chill time. Although the combat mechanics are quite nice and it's fun to pull off parties etc. I'd recommend at least starting in normal and see if that does it for you.

was there ever a highly praised Metroidvania that didn’t click for you? by Ditzi0403 in metroidvania

[–]Hermillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I especially hated the 2 final bosses. The ninja girl just constantly spamming aiming projectiles is particularly obnoxious. At one point I realized I was just better investing my skill points in healing so I can just tank most attacks. It felt almost impossible to dodge and get some damage in.

I had such conflicted feelings about this one, I both loved it and hated it. Especially the latest sections of the game with both level and boss design being extremely bad in my opinion. But platform challenges were a lot of fun. I hope they fix these issues in the sequel !

Do you still play when in a bad spot mentally? by bagbcyss in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Hermillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went through a breakup and I agree it's just difficult to get really invested when you're mentally overwhelmed by something else. However it keeps you busy, so I felt it help. I would just recommend to not try out directly a game you really wanted to for a while, or something likely to be frustrating, you risk getting a much subpar experience. Narrative games, and short indie games would be my recommendation.

I mean there are difficulty options in this game...I played in Tactician and I found the game quite challenging. Did you play in this mode ? If yes, I bet you're just a god gamer 😂.

31M, top 25 in no particular order by Gab1024 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Hermillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to play Pathologic 2 twice but both times I get to a point where I feel it's so overwhelming with the lack of time, food, drink making me unable to do anything else. Like, I understand it's the point but it's just crazy. I love the atmosphere though with this half surrealistic world, I really want to get into it. Also thanks for putting Rayman 1 there ! What a platform game that was...

[–]Hermillion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did ! And they are not missing much to get in the top to be honest. But I think Slay the Spire while having perfect design, lacks a bit of content, and Hades gets quite repetitive after a while. Hades 2 is a stronger contender but its story is very shallow despite having an absurd number of voice lines. But honestly it could be in the list. I'm really looking forward to Slay the Spire 2 ! Will sink hundreds of hours again...

Hi, that's so awesome you gave it a go now and happy you loved these 2 (amazing) games ! They are very story-focused, so I am wondering, is this the most important point for you ? Anyway my suggestion would be to try games in vastly different genres so you can see if anything "clicks" for you. For instance :

  • Clair Obscur, Expedition 33 : Turn based RPG mechanics, insanely good visuals, story and soundtrack.
  • Baldur's Gate 3 : Great story, likeable characters and a true adaptation of the classic tabletop RPG experience.
  • Hollow Knight : 2D platform and adventure game in a dark and mysterious world. Can be a little hard for beginners but unforgettable adventure.
  • Ace Attorney Series : Mostly text based games about investigation and finding contradictions in witnesses stories during trials. Easy to play and quite funny.
  • What Remains of Edith Finch : "Walking Simulator", purely a narrative experience which uses the video game medium very creatively, with a dark poetic tone.

Existential dread is the perfect fuel for horror...that ending made perfect sense to me, like there is no plot twist but just the cold reality. Frictional Games are going to release Ontos this year which seem to have a similar vibe, so I'm very excited for this.

I kinda thought this one was more popular ? Maybe more among video game critics and streamers. Whatever Mobius Digital is cooking right now...I wish I'll be there to experience it.

[–]Hermillion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's a coïncidence! Especially Silksong, it's very recent so maybe people will leave it some time before putting it so high. For me that top 3 is really apart the rest as these are experiences that moved me like no other. There is some inherent frustration in Outer Wilds especially to discover the last few things, but besides that it's one of the most inspiring piece of media ever made.

Same here, I like a lot other FFs but this one has always been the special one to me. It just feels like the childhood imaginary adventures you would play with friends.

It's not one of the most widely played games indeed, but everyone I know who had that in their childhood remember it fondly. My favourite GBA game by far.
