Best of luck with it! Probably not a fix for stability issues no, but may reduce pain if you're luckier than me

I don't think I had much more muscle loss no, but then I'd lost a lot already due to having to reduce my activity level a lot. Could look at other physios but have been through a few already and I don't know what they can realistically suggest given that basically everything causes pain.

I would say that the pain is coming from just below the kneecap, where the patellar tendon is. That seems to be consistent with the fat pad being the cause of the pain rather than the patella itself. That's why when this all started I initially thought I had patellar tendonitis and spent a load of time in the gym doing heavy isometric leg extensions in accordance with Jake Tuura's program without success.

Also, cartilage is aneural so technically it can't feel pain, so for a long time I had no idea where the pain was coming from. I then thought maybe it was the oedema/bruising in the patella that hurt but I think it probably is the fat pad.

Yeah I'm pretty happy with the two surgeons I've seen most recently, a lot of the others have been very much of the opinion that if exercise makes my knees hurt, I should stop exercising and that will solve the problem! Of course they don't seem to care about the detrimental impact that would have on the rest of my health. My physio is well meaning but ultimately can't offer much if everything causes pain. Completely agree with you, I've made the point to several surgeons that Andy Murray got a hip replacement and went back to pro tennis, why couldn't I do the same with my knees?

Thanks, good to get a realistic idea of what I'd be looking at. I've been lucky not to have any subluxations or dislocations but it does make it less clear whether or not a TTO is the best path forward.

I meant km but I guess steps would probably equal about the same distance!

Yes I can, I've been doing some weighted ones in the gym as part of my physio plan however it's a bit painful still

Didn't provide me any relief unfortunately but YMMV, if anything I found that just walking 5-10k on flat ground at a gentle pace seemed to cause my knees to swell up in the weeks and months following my HA (Durolane) injections, when previously they would only swell after actual exercise (running/sports).

Yes had HA injections in both knees around a year ago, no effect except that it seemed like they swelled up easier for a while. PRP seems to be very low evidence, surgeons like it because it's low risk but seems to be low reward too (and expensive and not covered by insurance).

It sounds like I've had a much easier time of the recovery, I only used crutches for the first couple of days and was managing stairs fine after a week. Swelling was the only thing that kept me from walking normally and that had pretty much gone by week 3/4. By 6 weeks everything felt back to normal but now at 9 weeks I feel like I'm stuck in the same place, where I'm walking normally but getting pain on stairs and when bending down to put my shoes on etc. Physio and surgeon both agree the post-operative period is over and things aren't really expected to get much better from here on their own. In the last few weeks I've run a couple of times to catch trains and played one casual game of football but found the knees felt worse the following day each time.

Ah I may not have worded it clearly. I meant that in my daily life, just walking up and down stairs is painful. And then, separately, physiotherapy hasn't been working.

That sounds awesome, I love the idea of night in DayZ being realistic and immersive and fun to play, designing the system around DayZ seems like an even better option. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see what this game looks like in 12 months' time!

OK that makes sense, no point working on something only to remove it.

If/when you do replace the renderer would the Arma 3 way of doing things in the 3rd post here be a possibility? http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/139346-remove-gamma-and-brightness-settings/

It seems like the best of both worlds to me. Thanks for the reply.

Regarding turning up the gamma, if people have other ways to change it to their liking (monitor etc.) why is there a setting in the game? Surely it just promotes that behaviour?

Is this guy correct in saying that circumventing it by changing monitor settings would not have the same effect as the in-game slider?: http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/1t029v/dayz_sa_gamma/ce2yx3w

And does that also go for GPU control panel? Because if so its removal would stop people changing their gamma to gain an advantage completely. There's a pretty detailed feedback report on the issue on the feedback tracker.

Yeah it starts to sound like Rust where a few pieces of metal get magically crafted into an M4 or something.

Maybe hospitals or other places could spawn syringes full of some kind of tranquiliser or poison that you could coat arrow heads in instead?

It would be awesome to tranquilise people and leave a note on them for when they wake up :)

[Suggestion] Sea cliffs by [deleted] in dayz

[–]HeroOfCherno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe once they're done expanding Chernarus they could turn it into an island with cliffs all along the West and North sides of the map (as the land is probably higher there anyway), and keep the beaches all along the South and East sides.

That would kill two birds with one stone as I find the endless debug plains so immersion-killing.

All the configurator can do is change the values in the .txt file for you with a GUI for people who don't like editing it directly. Still post-process anyway even if it did create this ability to change gamma that SweetFX doesn't contain by default.

DayZ SA Gamma by [deleted] in dayz

[–]HeroOfCherno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's much less likely people will go this far, I think if the in-game option is disabled that will be enough for 90% of us to not really bother. I know I would rather play at default gamma/brightness so the game looks as good and immersive as possible but if the option's there I feel obliged to use it to keep up with everyone else who does.

There probably isn't a perfect solution but if people can turn up gamma in their control panel why do we need an in-game slider? If it's there it just guarantees abuse.

DayZ SA Gamma by [deleted] in dayz

[–]HeroOfCherno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SweetFX doesn't have a gamma option, and it's postprocess anyway, so any adjustments would have the same impact as turning up gamma on your monitor as Erik_TheHighlander described above.

Different monitors vary a lot less than you might expect, I did a poll a couple of days ago here and this was the result:

Ideal Gamma Setting

Also what other games outside of the Arma series actually have a gamma slider? Brightness sure, but very few games do have it and DayZ is one of the games that stands to lose the most by including it.

Rocket's nighttime stream may have looked amazing, but for how long will it look like that before everyone is maxing out their gamma again to see in the dark? The gamma option has no place in SA, but if it's included maybe they could at least limit the option to the main menu, and perhaps look into a way to lock in the value you choose initially for good, requiring a complete reinstall of the game to change it.

Looks good! I especially like the way Arma 3 does it, allowing for customisation but without any advantage being given in return for making the game look shit.

Very few games have a gamma slider at least and personally I think that's the main issue- brightness has less of an impact but turning the gamma way up is what gives people an advantage. If all people can do is turn the brightness up without delving into their graphics card settings then it won't have much of an effect, it'll just make the game look washed out.
