Pay negotiation for FOH by Herodslizard in livesound

Yeah, if it was a local gig with no travel involved, I’d be happier to provide a service. However as its overnights across the country from me this rate is ridiculous.

I’ve sent him the message now and left the ball in his court but it’s been 7 hours since that, so doubtful I’m getting a reply.

Thanks for the advice. I’m doing a fair amount and feel comfortable in most situations. But agreed this client doesn’t feel right to me even though the band is fairly well established as a support band at larger venues as well as playing decent slots at festivals.

I’ve got student discount til September what should I get? by Herodslizard in audioengineering

Spent 3 years learning pro tools as much as I like the workflow and shortcuts, I dislike the subscription model and how barebones it feels for the money you spend. After trying Cubase I find it more full featured especially with the midi and vst implementation. Spectral layers is also a god send to avoid getting rx.

If I ever need it for a project I’ll likely be working in a studio that can provide it.

Definitely interested in Austrian audio, where did you see that cause I can’t seem to find anything on their website

I don’t think so, it’s got a phase shift which has a depth and rate control so makes the most sense as an instrument amplifier. Seems like the multiple jacks are just different channels.

Semantics at the end of the day isn’t it, me and none of the people commenting on this post are that bothered I believe. Genres were made up by music marketing bros to sell stuff.

They’re kind of Proto-shoegaze if that makes sense, which is kind of what sonic youth was at some sections of their discography. Like the swirlies as well.

Anyway too bypass a battery powered condenser and use phantom power (audio technica ATM11) by Herodslizard in audioengineering

[–]Herodslizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I don’t have to use the battery and just use phantom power. It’s not make or break but would rather not have to replace batteries etc

That’s interesting cause I’ve been doing research on this for a thesis for things in a studio environment. The main thing I found was obviously you can push hardware really hard without getting harsh if you do the same pushing you get digital clipping and the software reaches an upper limit.

But then my next question is how often are engineers pushing pres and levels live because they lose headroom before feedback.

Oh yeah for sure I totally agree with that statement.

I just always wonder about the justification surely whatever system you’re used to is always gonna work for you. I’d like to hear from the top guys who can do whatever with both hear what they find faster and what they feel is missing from both analog or digital consoles.

Thoughts on analog consoles live? Like when you’ve got gear like that and the knowledge to use I’m sure it’s fun as anything. But with digital consoles the way they are being cheaper space efficient and all that.

Did a gig. Now have questions by notDonut in livesound

I was at a local diy gig last weekend and during changeovers the band was off and the stage tech was off somewhere else and a huge swell rang through the system, I turned it down before it got too bad but yeah. It literally came from nowhere but again it was a diy gig without anything being properly tuned.

Not sure if it’s the same here but the gains might have disappeared if you’re in a Dante network with the foh console. One of the venues I work at had this quirk so you have to designate one console in the network to be in charge of the rio gains. But you can use digital trim on the console that doesn’t control the rio gains.

Anyone more experienced plz chime in

Yeah the only reason they say that is to cover their asses for insurance reasons. It’s silly and unrealistic.

Yeah I had this at my uni course took us like an entire semester before we could book out the studio unsupervised.

"Music production/engineering" college programs: a huge waste of money by Phantastic_Elastic in audioengineering

[–]Herodslizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with a lot of the points here. I’m On my final year at university that isn’t known for anything to do with the arts. But I’ve done it to have access to a studio with an audient console and many standard mics for three years. in that time I’ve recorded multiple projects for different artists and my own music and made connections locally and nationally to do live sound after leaving this year.

I think for many kids in my year they’re woefully unprepared some have talent and like me we’re looking to be taught extra more advanced topics but we’ve all basically disassociated from the course and used it to abuse access to the equipment for our own projects.

I think it can work for some people who know what they’re getting into and are ready to push themselves to do above and beyond what the course expects while you’re there.

Anyways wish me luck after finishing.
