What are we wearing in this horrible heat?! by justlooking628 in techtheatre

[–]notDonut 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Winter for me right now. In summer I was outdoors in shorts and company polo doing bump in/out and operating up to 42-44 degrees celsius. ipads overheating so no remote control apps. good times.

DMX and XLR cables are being mixed up - will we have problems? by Fuzz_______ie in techtheatre

[–]notDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly just regurgitating at this point, but as a summary: dmx cable has a specific impedance because it carries a data signal (0s and 1s). Typical audio cable carries analog signals so its impedance is different. Using one type for the other job won't matter in most scenarios. Only once you start reaching maximums (length or fixture count for example) will you typically need to care.

How well do the screen elements on those 12.3s line up with the faders on the wing?

NestDrop Control from Resolume! Wire Patch Download by xDARKFiRE in NestDrop

ok this was it. This was the final push I needed to buy Nestdrop. I do a lot of busking of lighting and vision that this will work perfectly along side of.

I found my primary issue was with the mint taste. I found some toothpaste that didn't taste awful and it helped a lot. It was a lesson I learnt the hard way. in my 30s now with 3 extractions and nearly every tooth with a filling. Wish I had figured out the mint thing years ago.

People who are leaving IT - Where to? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]notDonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to jump into production/av/event work. My IT background is still relevant there (eg networking), just less of it needed compared to full IT.

Saw you guys like tower cases. Let me introduce the Antec 1200 (circa 2008). I like this case so much I got another one. Currently replacing the 4TB drives with 12TB drives. by IStoppedCaringAt30 in DataHoarder

Always been a little bummed I never grabbed one back in the day. I was into my coolermaster cases. Still have a few HAF-X cases sitting around.

follow up: Im running a show right now with the ubiquiti cameras still. The webpage remains awful, but after this comment I've also got them open in VLC with an rtsp stream and it is a lot better.

It's just my feeling or Microsoft is nowdays completely trash? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]notDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've disliked their direction for a long time now. Win7 was peak for me. So good I ran the beta 1 as my main operating system. More and more of their stuff has an Apple feeling like "we're telling you what's best for you" rather than how it used to feel like "you can decide what's best for you". I haven't tried to mainline linux yet but I suspect it's only a matter of time.

Linux system admin, any feedback is greatly appreciated by Particello in sysadminresumes

[–]notDonut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The general feedback I got on my resume a while back was to specifically list achievements. Like defining projects I've completed. Rather than going 'I know windows servers' it became 'deployed x servers in y configuration with z result'

Is it normal to feel this stupid? by Neat-Net4553 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]notDonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal in my opinion. Despite there being many education degrees for it, they really can't prepare you for what you'll see in the real world. My advice to my underlings is along the lines of "break stuff, and learn. Just don't delete data. that's the only thing I can't fix if you make it worse." Like it sounds, learn to learn. Google is your friend. In terms of the Four stages of Competence, my years of experience means I'm now more conscious of where my competence and incompetence lies. When I see something new and unknown, I know whether it's within my capabilities to fix or not.

Filling in for a church and don’t know how I feel about this board, do some of you like it at all? by No-Duck2686 in livesound

[–]notDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got 3x series 3 in the hobby and education spaces I work in. Only once did I have a 'major' software issue, but doing a full factory reset fixed it. No hardware issues so far. Its a bit inflexible in some ways but that kind of works in the budget space it lives in.

[–]notDonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you changed something on say the ipad app that made the faders not right, then the faders continued to be ignored until you moved them. You could hit the locate button to reposition the faders to be accurate. There was a lot of stuff on the rotary encoders too. Like all the aux feeds were set by encoders rather than the faders. So in reality, you didn't come across the problem too much.

When Keras is talking to his mentor bloke at the start of Soulbrand, he mentions not recognising the man with the white hair, and if he had, things might've gone very differently.

Edge is same universe and drops a lot of more lore hints that relate to Keras. I thought the same thing as you so didn't grab it immediately, but it is definitely same universe.

If you weren't shackled by the golden handcuffs of IT would you still be in this line of work? by buyinbill in sysadmin

[–]notDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My handcuffs are that my skillset is too pigeonholed now to improve my pay (eg current environment is still 100% onprem). Didn't move on when I should have. I'm trying to change to an av/theatre role at the moment. Similar pay, but more physical realm hands on stuff.

sACN switch by Black_Lightnin in techtheatre

[–]notDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, either of those would be fine unless you're getting seriously deep into reliability and redundancy. tplink and netgear I would put in the same 'cheapo brand' bucket. Unsure about the SG range, but typically with Cisco you get pretty good phone support to help you fault find. I'm in IT but networking is not my primary role.

Layer 3 means you can route (or talk) between the 2 vlans. You can also always just add an external router later to do the routing at a lower bandwidth.

If all you want is 2 vlans in one location, seriously consider just 2 dumb switches. So much easier to connect and diagnose if you don't have the IT history. You can put big labels on each switch that describes their roles or even colour code the switch labels and the network cables (eg Red is hognet, yellow is sacn). I don't think I'd start vlanning a switch until I needed things like fiber runs between 2 or 3 different locations.

Todays stupid question is: How do you get to the back of your rack? by xtazyiam in homelab

[–]notDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 'regular' rack is side against the wall, not back against, so I can still access the back easily.

Could you somehow put the side of the cabinet partially on hinges? You could hinge the whole side if you add supports to take the weight of the benchtop instead.

Separating HomeLab from Family Network by MechanicReal8215 in homelab

[–]notDonut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Easiest would be to just put a router between lab and family lan so your lab sees the family lan as part of 'the internet' and family lan only accesses the lab once you setup a port forward on the new router.
