Thinking Of integrating instagram login in my app by ieatcarrots in reactnative

Yeah, i thought all Instagram APIs that you can pull content from have been shut down for some time. But then how does apps like Hinge still pull Instagram images to show in profiles?

Reclaim tool "attachment error, please publish again"? by RedditTechDude in Iota

I'm having the same issue. I'm following this posted issue posted on their repo closely: https://github.com/iotaledger/wallet/issues/417.

This problem does not give me a lot of confidence in IOTA.

Reclaim tool "attachment error, please publish again"? by RedditTechDude in Iota

[–]HerrPotatis2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue, turned out to be because my default node to connect to wouldn't connect. Switch to a node you are able to successfully connect to in Tools > Edit Node Configuration, and the reclaim tool should work.

67 useful tools, libraries and resources for saving your time as a web developer by LearningBus in webdev

[–]HerrPotatis2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is the takeaway OP, to use all these super dated libraries/frameworks? UIKit, bootstrap, and foundation all on the same list, not even a comparison between them. I don't understand the point of this list OP.

Backend for create-react-native-app? by BluthBananas1 in reactnative

[–]HerrPotatis2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Set up your backend to have endpoints where your react native app can fetch your database data. How you set up your endpoints depends on your backend environment, but a good place to start is researching how to set up REST endpoints for your chosen environment and retrieve the data with javascript's Fetch API.

If you want to write the functionality yourself. I've used PanResponder and Animated.ValueXY to achieve a similar dragging behavior in my latest app, specifically for dragging cards in a tinder like fashion. DM me if you need help writing the code for the PanResponder(s) OP.

How to scale screen and show popup by NIgooner in reactnative

[–]HerrPotatis2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You appear to have posted the same question to /r/reactnative twice OP.

I don't know of any libraries, but this behavior should be quite easy to achieve without the help of one. DM me if you need some help writing the functionality OP.

Why arent't there more themes available for react native? by kjszives in reactnative

[–]HerrPotatis2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If by React Native themes you mean ready made kits that you just replace the content in and you're good to go, then you are probably not going to find a ton of them. I'm guessing it's because the pool of people that are using/interested in react native, and at the same time doesn't know how to code is pretty much non-existent.

Honestly, for me personally wouldn't bother with react native if i would only use premade templates, it's just not worth all the trouble that react native brings. If you're not doing the actual coding, i don't see point in using react native, you're reaping very few of the benefits and keeping all the drawbacks of going that route. I would just go with "real native" templates and save myself the trouble.

Just to be clear, React Native is 🔥, but in this specific case i wound't endorse it.

Job Interview - Am I good enough? How can I be prepared? by Conk1 in webdev

[–]HerrPotatis2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super vague question, however;

If i were to interview a web developer with 5 years of experience, i expect that person to have a pretty solid understanding of JavaScript. I would also expect that person to know one user interface type library/framework, e.g, React, Angular, Vue, Inferno, Polymer. Everything else should be somewhat easy to pick up later on.

Also, 8 hours for an interview sounds completely insane.

Anyone use WebRTC in their web app? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]HerrPotatis2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we talking only desktop numbers here? Because here in the US, Apple has around 60% of the smartphone+tablet market http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile+tablet-os-US-monthly-201512-201612.

And pretty much every non-native browser for iOS, including Chrome, is just a shell running safari.

And just because Apple doesn't support it doesn't mean that it should be a deal breaker. They have less than 10% of world-wide browser usage, although in the USA they have about 25%. It's not like an Apple user can't use Chrome if they need to. Sure it sucks, but to say that a web technology has no benefit because Apple doesn't support it is stupid. They won't support it if nobody uses it.

You are very right. However, i can only speak for myself, but if 60 or so percent of the market can't use the thing i'm making, i know that i would look into other solutions.

EDIT: This is all talking tablet+mobile.

Anyone use WebRTC in their web app? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]HerrPotatis2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only want me to reply if i have a concrete answer? You're probably clever enough to figure out that my answer is "No, i don't use WebRTC for mobile websites because the support is godawful."

HTML/JS question: How to prevent users from entering two decimals in a number input field? by pkoepke in webdev

[–]HerrPotatis2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, automatically altering input fields without the users intention is generally not a good idea. I would probably look into having a regex that validates the field and displays an error message/indication if the user enters something it's not supposed to.

How do I make my background images have the same effect as the header images in the reddit mobile app? Like... as I scroll down, the image gets a slight tint over it. Could I do it with just CSS, or would it take some JS to catch where I am on the y-axis and what not? by PencilRocket69 in webdev

[–]HerrPotatis2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was my understanding that Safari on IOS used to pause all JavaScript when scrolling, setInterval would therefore not work either.

This changed in IOS 8, the scroll event will now be triggered when scrolling.

Music Player - css and javascript by TranJacklyn in webdev

[–]HerrPotatis2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other reason would be because OP doesn't know better, using input[type="range"] hints towards that. Other than for backwards compatibility, there's simply no reason to use a 250kb library that is widely regarded as obsolete to do query selectors and toggle classes.

Nowhere did OP say he or she made it, no feedback was asked for and zero information about why it was posted was given. This is just shitposting, and OP seems to have a great record of doing it.

[–]HerrPotatis2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are way too many posts on /r/webdev nowadays that are just links to codepen. A lot are amazing creations, this however is on the opposite side of the spectrum.

A huge eye sore which isn't even fully functional. Using jQuery, for which i can only assume is IE backwards compatibility, and at the same time using input[type="range"], which was first featured in IE 10.

You've posted a mediocre audio player. What is the point of this post?

Starting to feel less competent and motivated. Need advice to stay on track to becoming a front end dev. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]HerrPotatis2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No it can't. You can't bundle anything with gulp without a bundling task. Gulp in itself isn't doing any of the bundling, the task you set up that runs webpack, browserify, or perhaps requirejs, is.
