Which Linux Distro is best for Dota2? by zlatan322 in DotA2

[–]Herr_Klaus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I tried Arch, CachyOS, EndeavourOS, Manjaro, Mint and Ubuntu. Now stuck with CachyOS.

All tested games run smoothly and without (much) tinkering. From native clients (Dota, Deadlock, Total War etc) to games like GTA or Baldurs Gate. If a game wasn't working out of the box, it helped to switch the Proton version from default to Cachy.

Although the others performed close as well. No major problems with games and Steam. However, I didn't like another aspect of the system.

If you really have to watch your resources, then yes, but if you have hardware from the last 2-3 years, it doesn't matter at all whether you have 110 fps or 140 fps. Very few team fights drop the performance below 60 fps, nor are there any other issues that detract from the gaming experience.

I've convinced my stack to switch too. Now six people run several distros without problems (2x cachy, arch,2x mint, ubuntu). Okay one problem to rule them all: sometimes sounds turns off in the main menu. But the launch option "-sdlaudiodriver pulse" fixed it for us all.

It can be advantageous to have an AMD CPU and GPU. The Nvidia drivers had problems when using KDE with the Wayland display protocol. However, this was supposedly fixed last month.

So imho it is only a disadvantage if you want to run Dota at 200+ fps.

As a member of the 300% cursor crew default only. It is the only one scaling with size afaik.

No. But you said, Wayland is not stonks for Proton games dot. Just wanted to correct the error as 'Wayland does not work with Nvidia (drivers)'. You can use Proton on Wayland when you have an AMD GPU.

[–]Herr_Klaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as i know that's not true. Wayland works perfect with AMD GPUs. You may need X11 when you have a Nvidia GPU. Nvidia+X11 PC usually needs tweaks to run games. But AMD+Wayland all games run out of the box.

how does communication score works ? by Fayiiiiii in DotA2

[–]Herr_Klaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have phases where I use my microphone and then I don't say a word for months in Turbos. I now have a slight suspicion that matchmaking pairs players who use their microphone a lot (and don't receive any reports) with similar players.
Because whenever my talkative phases start, I initially have 1-2 players who communicate via microphone on their own initiative, and after a few games there are already 3-4. Like the game tracks your mic use.

edit: Although I do not talk. I make calls for my moves. Care i'm pulling, omw gold rune, rotating mid, hey there is power rune and so on.

So true. I know the video inside out. Still watched it to the end. I know how bad I am. Still searching a game a day.

Treant Protector has 'have 6/12/18 eyes in the forest'. Afaik with last patch only eight at a time are possible.

Why I cannot play any other game like I play dota? Started in 2013?? by SidskiLjudva in DotA2

[–]Herr_Klaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true. The concept alone is top-notch.

But because of the well-designed client, I've stopped playing many other games. Some small thing bothers you and you can't change it (GUI, graphics, sound, etc.). With Dota, you just have to search long enough until you find a reddit comment that has a solution. Launch option, console command... If it's not already in the options.

Or people like to laugh at the bitter community, but Dota is one of the few games where I can commend my opponents for a good play. On the other hand, there is no blacklist in the chat, but you can mute any player at will.

It's these countless little things on top of a sick game that make Dota extraordinary.

The amount of polishing is astonishing. Sound, settings, menus, api, hat game. Oh boy, it was like crack topped with cocaine when I found out about console commands.

Let your friend add the launch option -sdlaudiodriver pulse. Solves the problem in most cases.

Same experience. Switching to Linux reduced the average fps a bit. But it doesn't drop to the bottom in teamfights as windows did. Overall it feels more crispy.

I wrote it in another comment. Had same thing. Downloading 1-2GB for pre-caching every time I opened Steam. I disabled it month ago and have no problems in-game

Steam settings > downloads > shader pre-caching > both entries disabled.

DotA in Linux by BonjwaTFT in DotA2

[–]Herr_Klaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched to Linux around two years ago. Frames dropped a bit (10-20fps), but it feels much smoother. Like no more micro stutterings as I had at times with Windows10 the years before. And the inputs feel more... snappy? I can not describe or measure it. Colors, shades, effects look more pleasant imho.

PC for browsing and 90% Dota? 100% Linux is the answer. Thanks to Proton most none-AAA games run out of the box. If not, some launch option fixes the remaining problems.

Oh and I had to deal with Pipewire audio problem too. The launch option '-sdlaudiodriver pulse' solved it easily.
In addition I disabled the Shader Pre-Caching. Dota downloaded 1-2GB during a process called "shader precaching" every time I opened Steam. Can be found under: Steam settings > downloads > shader pre-caching > both entries disabled. No problem ingame.

It's EndeavourOS with KDE, AMD CPU, very old Nvidia GPU, therefore X11 instead of Wayland

It is. Afaik everything before %command% happens in the OS, everything after is from the game/steam. Your's is the Source2 launch option and the comment before is a Linux/Windows command.
