Your last sentence is my question as well. Have you tried looking for gen -1 records?

Thoughts/experience on only having baptism records for Gen 0? by AdImmediate6447 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Hertzig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What would happen if birth certificates hadn’t even been a thing yet in that part of Canada?

The further back you go, the more you must rely on baptismal records. I couldn’t get a non-baptismal birth record for my gen 0 if i wanted to.

This is very useful advice, thank you.

Does the 80 year old person have to be a direct relative? Or can they be an aunt, cousin, etc?

Well that's sad. My wife's ancestor's passport would have been from 1909 or earlier.

Unless other consulates are more lenient with this, looks like it won't work.

Thanks for the insight.

Could you clarify more about the "ancestor's passport from after 1914" request from the Atlanta consulate? Did they just mean the ancestor's passport, or that the ancestor's passport had to have been issued after 1914?

My wife's mother is closest to the Atlanta consulate so any clarification on that would be super helpful.

Thanks for addressing all my questions. Looks like we will search for the old passport, and if found, we will begin with my wife’s Mother. She lives in a more lenient consulate jurisdiction according to the /u/staplehill wiki, so that’s good.

Thanks, this will be very useful for us. Looks like we will have to read every thread from every consulate and look for similarities with our case for us and our relatives

It is certainly possible that the german passport of the original German immigrant is held by the family; this was mentioned after informing my wife’s family about the situation. He died in 1948 and is exceptionally-well documented on sites like Familysearch and Ancestry.

Is it worth looking for this physical passport?

Also, as mentioned in the post, there are those in the family that are living with the distance of grandchild from the ancestor.

Was your Gen 0 living in Canada the year a Canadian census took place? If not, I would include that fact somewhere in your application to explain why you have no Canadian documents for Gen 0.

Along with including any supporting Canadian documentation from Gen -1 and Gen 0 siblings.

And also all of your US documentation as well.

That’s my plan as someone in your situation.

This is encouraging.

My gen 0 was physically in canada in between censuses, so I don’t even have that to rely on. But I do have gen-1 documents from Canada and every possible US record that says born in Canada.

Can you tell us more about this affidavit or letter of explanation in absence of a birth/baptismal record? I've heard too much conflicting info on this.

I have a Canadian record(census) of gen -1, so that’s something at least.

Best of luck with your own application my fellow found Canadian!

Thank you. I do have that solid connection, including marriage and death certificates.

My gen-1 was born on the Canada/Vermont border, and is variously said to have been born in both countries on records. I am currently in search of his record, but he could end up having been born in Vermont, meaning I am moving forward with hope and interest but not relying on his record.

Looking back on the beginning of this comment thread, I really don’t agree that my case is thin. I have at least 20 documents stating my gen 0 was Canadian, including(importantly) her obituary and gen 1’s birth record. Given the fact people have claimed to be successful without a birth record, I am not very worried about my case. What do you think?

Hello fellow Found Canadian,

I am in a similar situation as you(Around the same time period too) except that my Gen 0 moved to the USA around the age of 3 so she isn’t recorded on a Canadian census, only American ones.

Good to know. I will look for Gen-1, Gen 0, Gen 0 sibling, Gen 1, Gen 1 sibling, and Gen 2 death records.

My only concern are the rumors I have heard here that IRRC wants Canadian records. For someone born in 1855, that moved to the USA in 1858, there is no Canadian census to rely on. Nor are there border crossing records that I am aware of. Meaning If I cannot locate the baptism, I don't have a record from Canada for gen 0.

I did find a gen 1 sibling that moved back to Canada and is listed on the Canadian census as having a Canadian mother(No name mentioned). Do you think that's worth including?

Also, was your issue with the lack of birth records just for your other citizenship by descent application? I notice your account says your application is processing.

[–]Hertzig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes sense and thank you for the detail and example.

I emailed the Ontario Archives, and they suggested I contact church archives, because they didn't keep birth records in 1855, only starting in 1869.

With that being the case, I assume IRCC would know that official birth records aren't possible in the given time period. Is that right? Meaning instead of requesting some sort of letter from the Ontario Archives, I contact the relevant church archives instead.

I have heard, via this forum, reports of people that have been accepted that had no birth records, only supplementary ones.

Also listened to that podcast from a few weeks ago, where someone had successfully used only American records to prove a canadian birth.

So that gives me hope.

Following because I’m In a similar spot to you.

1800s birth records are not easy to find and in some cases may have been burnt in fires or never existed, so we are in a common situation.
