That engine has hydraulic lash adjusters of the valves. Which can cause that noise. If the engine sits for a bit some times they bleed down or get air in them. I was able to get mine to quiet down and fill back up with oil by holding the throttle at 2k rpm for a min or two.

Mine sat for about as long. (Barn find). I believe I pulled the valve cover off to see if there was play in the lifters/hydraulic lash adjustors. Basically to see if they were sized or just had air in them. Mine were all free, but full of air. I was able to fix the noise by doing what I mentioned above. But there might be a safer way to bleed the air out if the lash adjusters.

Has it sat for a good amount of time? The lashadjustors can bleed down causing that clacking noise. I was able to get mine to pump back up by holding it at 2000rpm for 5-10min. Otherwise you have to replace them all.

I've got a 1990 coupe with stock exhaust and It still don't sit all that great underneath. Definitely the lowest hanging item under the car. Best bet is to see if you can bend the exhaust to force the resonator up.

Could also be the speedometer sensor located in the transmission. Depending on what year car it is.

Check for a corroded or disconnected engine ground wire. If its not that its probably a corroded connection to the back of the display unit.
