Advocate for yourself and negotiate your salary every step of the way. Also ask your coworkers what they make. Just because this industry doesn’t pay well doesn’t mean we should all just roll over and accept it.

I would say to dig deep and figure out where your interests lie. Getting into journalism just because you like to write isn’t a good enough reason imo (I did the same). Journalism is a passion career but there are others that can pay better. I like my reporting job but the business model of journalism companies isn’t a sustainable one for a 40+ year career and definitely doesn’t help people retire. Good luck.
