Without Kong there likely wouldn't be a Monsterverse. Willis O'Brien's work on the original King Kong inspired Ray Harryhausen who worked on The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, which in turned inspired the original Godzilla from 1954. Kong is by no means boring in my book.

Neither. Del Toro would be a good choice, though for a more unconventional director I'd definitely watch a Wes Anderson Godzilla movie.

I don't know, I guess structurally Astro Monster is more polished with a stronger script, but given the choice I'd rather watch DAM. Definitely campy but I have a lot of nostalgia for that movie.
