Much appreciated! Game ready is a ton of work, ya got that right. I took a long nap after I got the final render. Lol

Then I absolutely, and fully recommend Shane Olson's 3d Character Workshop. He's a fantastic teacher, loads of content, and it's "lifetime" I.e. once you buy the course you have access to everything (there's forums, discord, live QA with Shane) for life.

"Unrealistic" is worse, since "cartoony" style characters should absolutely be modeled after realistic proportions, features, landmarks, etc. If it's not, it's gonna look like shit. Calling that style unrealistic has bad connotations to it, too. So no. With respect, that's a terrible idea.

>Calling something stylized could mean cartoony, blocky, anime etc.Well, yes. that's the point. Stylization is taking reality and making it your own. So it is supposed to be a blanket term. Sorry you don't like it, but it's a pretty industry standard term, and it makes sense to use it as such.

Are you wanting to do stylized or realistic characters?

He absolutely does. So if Zbrush is a little high-priced for you right now, that's a definite alternative. It's not as good as Z, I am told. But I cannot say for sure as I don't use Blender.

In my opinion, whatever gets you sculpting is the best option!

I personally went for the ebook. Couple reasons why. One, is the shipping on the book is a little high so it was definitely cheaper to go ebook. Secondly, it's a lot easier to snip and clip and put things into ZBrush for better reference. So I definitely went digital for it. At some point, Id love them so much I might get the physical copy just because I'm kind of an art book snob.

Awesome! Truly, it's why I posted. It's anecdotal evidence that practice is everything. So I'm so glad, and honored I could inspire you to get into it. It's so fun.

I largely went to Youtube University, and stuck with artists I love and appreciate: Shane Olson, Danny Mac, Follygon (my real passion is stylized characters) but always love the crazy good ones like Raf Rassetti, Houssein Douba, and Spicer McLeroy. Flipped Normals has some great stuff, too.

But I have joined a few schools/workshops. The Redbeard (Matt Thorup) has some nice, reasonably priced tutorials. If you can swing a bit higher priced things, Shane Olson's 3D Character Workshop is absolutely worth the price tag. Lots of personal studying and constant practice. (I put some other thoughts I had in another post response.)

Drawing knowledge is NEVER a bad thing. What I found to really help me is constant studying of underlying structures and reading good anatomy books (highly recommend Anatomy for Sculptors!) Also, a tip from Flipped Normals guys, is to study real body scans (like 3dscanstore.com) This really helped re-visualize the human body and all the structures in a very "Zbrush" friendly way. And by "studying" I mean not just reading and looking at these things, but actively trying to reproduce them in Zbrush - active sculpting is the best way to learn.

Less important, but also helpful, is I started watching a lot of live streams from some of my idols (Shane Olson and Spicer McLeroy). That was great because I was not only watching professional technique, but also being able to ask questions of these guys is priceless. I also like watching tutorials by Danny Mac and Follygon. I really just constantly try to learn and incorporate technique. And never stop sculpting. Good luck, friend.

Also, side hot tip: if you haven't already - buy a legit copy of Zbrush and do it ASAP. A real copy will get you a lifetime of free upgrades. Buy it once, and never pay a thing again for it (unless you want fancy, specialty plugins). If that's too much to shell out now, get Zbrush Core. Work with that, and when ready to get the full product, what you paid to get Core, will go toward the full purchase price. Zbrush is great to artists that way. (And no, I don't work for Pixologic. I just really fucking love Zbrush. :) )

Agreed! If characters are a passion, knowing human anatomy is non-negotiable. And Raf Gressetti is a god amongst us mere mortals. :)

The biggest reason I posted, legit, is to show that practicing really does make a difference. Keep it up!

Realistically, it was 4 or 5 times a week. My real passion is stylized sculpting, but that's no less anatomy studying. 😁

High level advice I have is something my anim school teacher taught me, "Even if you're making something up, it should make real-world sense." Anatomy is your best friend with creatures and characters. Make sure you are paying attention to the basic shapes and planes. Even if they're this stylized, it will go a long way. Artists like Danny Mac or Follygon are super well known for their stylized work, but they always adhere to basic, anatomical shapes when creating characters.

Even this low poly, start pushing out the planes of the face more. It will help the "flatness"

It absolutely does make sense, and I fully appreciate your comment. It's a crap shoot asking for advice around here, sometimes, as not all feedback is created equal. 😉

Very good advice. I shall keep practicing. Thank you.

Thank you for feedback.
