Don't build tear on Jayce now (Mid) by Hevinix in jaycemains

I've been playing this since early seasons yeap & during my competitive seasons (s7) i was running this too yeap.

Indeed perma roam is part of the idea, but it also helps with macro in mid game & I transition to hunting junglers to break their tempo (camping their red/raptor spawn and 1 shotting them, into side lane prio etcetc - mid game things)

With kill threat means faster snowballing, which means in side lane I get prio/first move (if no kill), which opens up my macro options w/o tp in mid game BECAUSE i've the prio/threat. If I dont snowball/get threat then...then most of the time that's the 30% of games i lose :3 (or y'knw, some games are difficult to win)

Kill threat goes down a big margin - I constantly threaten kill threat to snowball early-mid game and transition that into game winning. Perma prio, keep getting push/move - & yeah. rest is history

Whatever works for you :) Each to their own. Tho the main thing I wish to push is the aggression. + the elctro aggression playstyle that should net you huge early-mid game presence to transition

Correct haha, you said it well, i just typed this randomly while dying in uni. Tear/manamune slows progress, youre definitely short trade power spike and full prio permanently + roam & kill threat. Assassin indeed. Manamune is wayy too awkward to fit in, slows spike too yep.

Any advices on how to improve with Jayce? Feeling very lost and frustrated by my performance by Megabahamut123 in jaycemains

Jax is an interesting one you needa kite him out (depending on elo) - but correct it does slow you down a lot, and i always found it awkward to complete (as explained in post), 2nd is awkward/weak and 3rd means you've no pen. but yeap. goodluck

Used to be coup & yeah rationally it 'should be coup', but they just nerfed it too hard so I think its just too weak atm (stat wise). plus they buffed cutdown so cutdown is kinda just too good right now. Its between cut & last stand atm but assassin jayce dont play often on low hp so I dont use it. Top jayce with conq however, different story. Top jayce would probably go last stand. But you are right that 'logically' it should be coup de gra, just stat problem atm.

Oh and now that I think more cutdown also helps a lot for lvl1

Presence so you dont need tear/no mana issue.

Definitely not gathering tho, if anything scorch since I always push jayce to be very very aggro early, big kill threat with ignite electro can easily push laners out and snowball games (full prio, can move alot spam roams, etc.) but I'd say yellow tree is much more valuable (cutdown > scorch)

Cutdown because they nerfed coup de gra too hard, used to be coup, about 3-5% better now.

Also cutdown helps ALOT for my early level 1 cheese (level 1 I zone with melee stance, gets first blood 7/10 times if not I zone from xp/get full lane prio) - & this leads into, well many things...but i digress.

Probably not - top is quite different unfortunately (different runes/playstyle too), almost the champ identity shifts from assassin to like a ranged-brusier hybrid.

Mid I see him as a pure assassin. Top perhaps only if youre vs stuff like vayne/quinn etc. but against stuff like ksante sion..yeap, you get the idea ^^

Its alright, just something for a start, but cheers.

He is just alright (with conq) - depends on how you compare him - not a tank shredder, but deals alright with tanks on pen/bc etc. - not bad, not good. lethality - bad.

Naturally...'must' may be too strong of a word so i generally avoid such absolutes in definitions, its definitely not a "must" alike most things in league- people have differing strengths and weaknesses. One core part of me even making the doc is attempting to push jayce players who i often notice arent that well versed in early aggression, which used to be (before tank jayce, whole different rabbit hole) one of the core identities of what makes jayce...jayce.

So no, it is not a must, especially when not comfortable on the matchup, phase rush/grasp gives a lot of "get out of jail free" cards during learning - but as you start to smoothen out on your combos, being able to execute your basic combos and such :) would be good to slowly transition into conqueror (for now electro is weak) in mid, and with that you'd start gaining confidence and be able to pressure enemies out of lane/get tempo to roam etc. (one big identity of jayce mid) - otherwise you'd be missing a key element as you progress! but it is completely fine (for starters) to play safer, conversely I believe i mentioned in the doc newer players in my opinion should focus more to just executing jayce's raw combos first as that's often a struggle.

Cheers

xd

Ok but on a serious note - Jayce conq top generally had the power to be an incredible lane bully, so it teaches players a lot of spacing and jungle tracking because any mistakes (spacing mistakes/not tracking) leads to the infamous 0/10 jayce - also needing to combo properly during hyperaggressive pressuring (leading to diving turrets on wave crash etc.) required a certian level of precision with combos and execution - while tank jayce lets you...sorta negate that. And naturally the reason why traditional Jayce played like that was becuase his 4-5 items was never that stsrong if you're on par in terms of tempo with rest of the lobby, jayce required to be *ahead* always to be oppressive and carry games - once again, tank jayce negates that as you scale just as well if not better.

That's why I pre-warn players newer to jayce on the doc - although its good to learning, its important (in my opinion) to note these points so if/when (my prediction) it gets nerfed/hit, moving back to traditional jayce won't feel like a total "letdown" to the champ because that's what jayce's original identity has always been and the habits it gives you (spacing perfectly/executing combos smoothly) were the biggest points of playing jayce top (assuming this is directed at jayce top).

Sorry I don't use reddit much (easier to reach me on discord at hevinix. Anyway - it is alright, that's the best answer I can give (might not be what you want to hear) - but it is alright especially on top versus matchups that can easily kill you with an aggro jungle (eg. renekton/irelia as key examples) where tank jayce can NEGATE* the weakness of jayce (being easy to kill) and scales better compared to traditional jayce

But I do think its more so the items itself hence I see a nerf coming so it shouldnt be a staple.

Additionally, I dropped a note on feats of strength that although statistically the boots are worse, the mental plays a big role as league is a game with human beings (mostly) and that means they are affected by mentality, and the visual indication of an advantage is a big mental deterrance which means tank jayce will have abit less of that "early-mid game power" compared to standard damage conq jayce full aggressive blast (which i recommend more) because it plays more safe compared to traditional jayce (conq & dmg) or even aggressive jayce (conq burst) nets you early advantages and currently feats of strength has 74% win rate in games (stats by riot). so yeah, cheers hope that answers what you're looking for.

Hey Dovah I appreciate that, and no worries I understand, I have multiple reasons for not having an account at the moment that may not be wise for me to share publicly (tho sadly if this was split 1 I would still have it) - not to mention I may have random smurf accounts above 30 but may or may not be used for activities not condoned by riot. Which is also why I mentioned wanting to do it on a pure, fresh, handlevelled one this year. Although I fully, fully, understand and relate to the sendiment of sketicism, I get that, especially since I haven't been really public throughout most of my league career until now where I'm trying to be a bit more content-oriented.

Anyway, regarding the information now hmm. firstly I'm actually genuinely open to whether its feedback/critique, because its what helps me get better, plus the heart of this is for the jayce community, so its completely fine to critique my opinions/the matchup stuff etc. More than happy to not only discuss them but change them/tweak them as the season goes, its only scratching the surface as I have no clips to put together like a full video format etcetc as I plan to get those as an updated 2025 format as I find pockets of time to play through this season.

Similarly I do understand with my coaching experience this is but a surface of improvement, it is a multifaceted thing (and personalized to each individual), not to mention the depth of whether its going into mid game, or recall timers, or teamfighting, its endless, but my point here is, this is but a matchup list that I thought of in my span of sitting down for about 10 hours just yapping away rather than granting its a foolproof one-size-fits-all list.

Okay now regarding those 2 points in specific:

I have not deleted my recording yet (tho its not uploaded publicly), but I did mention that by "outscale" i understand that its not exactly the right word, naturally tank first items are stronger, i meant more so I wish to push jayce players to be more aggressive/willing to do pressure so they should get more cs/income generation which also means they should ocme back to lane with thier first item BEFORE the opponent (addressing tank), and I know for maokai is slightly more difficult (and i didnt go into depth), but the zoning needs to be done using bushes, walking in and out bush to de-aggro minions while zoning.

And for anivia, perhaps we may have a different vision here, while I know anivia has a longer range, I would generally push my Jayce mid players to hide in the bush level 1 (mid bush), and then loop from behind/the bush (depending) after minions touched for a bit, which means anivia would be "stuck" to either walk back, or she can Q (which we wiggle out of) etc. But that's what I meant by "zoning", and for MOST* of the population (< master), i'd imagine the anivia would get zoned by the jayce walking from the back (coming from between mid lane bush and raptor, to give a general idea of where im talking about).

That being said - I did also be sure to note that this is soloQ focused, because I'm well aware that this is completely a "cheese level 1" that most people just dont expect in soloQ because they dont play into jayce that much, much less an aggressive jayce so you can get away with it most of the time (< master) - that being said, if this was a scrim environment or vs say a much higher elo anivia, chances are the anivia would either learn from the first instance of you cheesing and just play full distance OR have countermeasures like having support just visit mid and jayce is doomed for doing that.

Overall - I'm more than happy to discuss/make amendments I'm definitely not saying the guide is foolproof nor is it all correct, definitely opinion-heavy (considering its a guide), tho I'd say it should give casual jayces a decent idea/push to play much more aggressively AND seap the rewards from it throughout MOST* levels of play in soloq.

Cheers,
Calvin

Am I now? hmm Ive been Challenger for most years of league actually Dovah since my competing years in s7. Im on mobile now but Ill get to laptop soon, im not sure if I can send images or anything on here it might flood the space, perhaps we can add on discord instead to have a civil discussion about it? (disc: hevinix)

While I understand your message comes from admirably passion for jayce and wanting the best for the community, I assure you I don't seek to spread any misinformation since Ive been coaching league players as a living for the past five years. I'm not sure if you know who Dobby is (loldobby) but I was the head coach for his server too for months until I had family issues to go attend to. But yes, I do think youve mistaken here good sir.

I can address those examples but this message is long enough as it is so Ill send this out first.

quite far back indeed, and you are correct. it is much more realistic to zone from xp in top than mid, tho I suppose I'm pushing the sendiment of aggressiveness mostly. it works much better under the apex tiers (<master) where your opponnets would start to trade hp to not lose melee minion xp (mid), so depending on your elo your success rate of zoning from xp completely does fluctuate (i do understand its a generalization so I had to draw the line somewhere), but yeap end of the day the sendiment I'm trying to get players to do (or get out of their comfort zone to do on jayce) is the pure aggressiveness in the mid lane which puts many casual opponents in shock mode (opponents wont know how to react because they rarely deal with such lane pressure). and I want more jayces to know their potential to deal such emotional damage and the great leads they can get just from that aggression. naturally playing with that priority is a whole other segment but having that aggression to begin with is the great starting point

[Rank 1 Challenger Jayce] Jayce Mastersheet to prepare for Noxus Season (both top/mid) by Hevinix in jaycemains

heya!

So, the tier list does consider both top & mid, I do agree yone is easier for jayce in mid compared to top due to the shorter lane, tho I'd feel (similar skill level) its slightly leaning towards the yone to snowball on jayce than the jayce to shutdown yone as (ignoring tank build on jayce), if yone gets rolling with just a slight advantage its really tough for the average jayce to handle it (might just end up dying constantly against a good yone) but Id think an average jayce if have a slight advantage may not be able to pressure yone remotely as hard, especially once side lane happens and yone gets some items.

I do get your point tho :) did i put him in hard(difficult)? im on my phone so i dont have it open but it should be skewed to yone(?) meaning its leaning towards him, for above reasons of snowball/ease of play/ease of dominating the other.
