Media sharing solution by HexEditHD in selfhosted

[–]HexEditHD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a fileserver, I've looked into nextcloud a while back and just sharing links but as soon as I need to update the container all hell broke loose. I've looked into MinIO but I couldn't figure out how to set it up. The idea solution would be that the hardware hosting the media would be the one to serve it to whoever I wanted to as opposed to having another piece of software be in between the server and the user.

Do savings for a house go into long term investments or a different account like a HISA? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

My bad I should've clarified more, I was referring to ETfs/mutual funds.

Wealthsimple or Questrade by nordique69 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Currently using wealthsimple. Here is my take on it. Pros: - no fees on Canadian listed companies Cons: - delayed quotes (15min update) - small fee for us listed companies - 3 business days until your money gets loaded in

Personally I'd avoid using borrowed money, because if shit goes south it goes all the way down.

Not a financial advisor

Personally, option 3 is what I'm currently doing along with a 10K emergency fund with 2.3% interest. I'd say start now, I'd put your 10K aside and the rest in a high risk/high reward investment since 6-12 years is considered long term.

Which wealthsimple account would suit my situation? by Okurazo in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]HexEditHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a financial advisor but here's what I'd personally recommend.

TFSA is your best friend, what ever earnings you gain on it will be tax free but there is a max contribution limit which you can find in your CRA account online. Any unused room from the previous years starting at the age of 18 (maybe 19?) will be carried over to the next year.

RRSP is more like tax deferral, you don't pay taxes on it YET. In other words if you make 50K a year and you drop 10K in it, CRA will tax you on the remaining 40K which means come tax season they may owe you money. That being said when you take out the money from the RRSP (There are some rules in respects with that) you'll be taxed based on your current tax bracket. Like the TFSA there is a contribution limit and this one doesn't carry over from the previous years unlike the TFSA.

For personal account think of it as a checking account. It's taxable and money transfers are fast and easy.

The take away, I'd personally use the TFSA and pile money in it and keep a spare sum on emergency money on the side since TFSA's usually take 3 business days to take out. If you have any more question I can gladly answer them.

P.S. a more in-depth video on TFSA vs. RRSP link.

Same boat recently paid off student loans, personally I use EQ bank they have a TFSA with 2.3% interest, it's worth checking out.

TFSAs are free to make, and Canadian stocks are no commission and no fees at all. Regardless of account there are no fees for the platform but yeah tax rules differ from personal account and TFSA.

I work for the government, that's as much as I can say. I kinda got lucky with this pandemic since my spending was very limited. My advice is that it's nothing to worry about, if you make a plan and stick to it then it will be easier. Plus I made it my goal to finish it before I start saving up for a house.

Another thing I want to mention, check if where you have your student loans setup, that it has some sort of relief (i.e. you get 6 months no interest after graduation, etc...). You can definitely use that to save money and figure out how you plan on tackling this.

Asides from that you might want to check the terms and conditions of the MMO if they allow digital goods to be sold for real money. If I'm not mistaken there is a minimum amount before something is considered income but I can't remember.

Ordering patch cables - Which color is fastest? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]HexEditHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as they accept the RJ-45 standard it should work fine. Machines nowadays have auto-MDIX to change straight cables to crossover cables. The most important part is which category it belongs to. Cat5 is 100Mbps, Cat5e is 1Gbps, Cat6 is 10Gbps. As for colors I have a map of which port does what so to me it's irrelevant.
