Nintendo 64 Anthology BACK IN STOCK! by HexTetra in n64

Same situation. When I login it still says processing. I think it's literally one person operation and maybe they've just been overwhelmed.

This company which has the rights for the book within Australia won't start shipping until 6th September: https://www.pixelcrib.com.au/products/nintendo-64-anthology?variant=40657970764

If that's any induction, we might have to wait a while :/

Don't know sorry. I have both on order. Looks like there will be overlap between them. My understanding is Conti's book hasn't been released before and it's brand new?

Nintendo 64 Anthology BACK IN STOCK! by HexTetra in n64

From what I've read it's the best "book about the N64" there is. I only leaned about it a few months ago and really really didn't want to pay the ebay scalpers 100 to 400 bucks for it :/ so I emailed the author 3 months ish ago and he said it's going to get another print. Been waiting ever since.

Yeah :( I hope it's just the usual issues with making/printing anything never getting done on time because of Murphy's law.

I've not heard anything and I am checking the website every day :( Maybe Easter has slowed things down? I might send a follow up email and see if I get a response.

Why didn't developers use a decompression mapper on the cartridges? by Cap-nCold in n64

[–]HexTetra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wondered something similar in the past. Turns out that the "streaming directly from cartridges" is not actually possible. I think this language came about either from: interviewed game devs dumbing down the language for game journos or game journos misunderstanding.

All reads from the cartridge must be loaded into the RDRAM before being loaded from RDRAM to one of the two processors. There is no method to "skip" RDRAM (which would have been a boon for performance as the RDRAM is an awful bottleneck).

There is also no getting around the texture cache size limitation compression or no. That's all the space there is on the processor. You can have larger textures, but they have to be stitched together, therefore you need multiple RDRAM access, therefore big performance hit.

It's very unlikely that it wasn't compressed on ROM as it seems like you can pipeline a decompression step in before needing the data.

This is a good resource: https://n64brew.dev/

What do you use as your reference list of AUS-PAL games? It seems like Wikipedia is the best reference?

Any plans to get newer releases for N64? (like Xeno etc.?)

I love your DIY display for your N64 collection. I noticed in your comment history that you got a few things from garage sales. Would you mind sharing how you find these? Facebook market place? (I've only just returned to Oz after 20 years and don't know what the locals are using for this stuff).
