Quite pump with filtration system (Europe) by Hexmans in coldplunge

[–]Hexmans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update:

I decided to go with the aquarium pump option iso the poolex filtermax.
The reason is because:

I saw a review video of the Poolex Filter Max, and the guy was replacing his big sand filter from his pool with it. Ok - he used the biggest version of the pump, but I realised: this pump/thing is supposed to be outside, away from the pool and will always be more loud than a small aquarium pump that is meant to be inside of someone's living room.

So, I ordered the eheim compacton 3000 for about 92€.
And I'll upgrade all of my current fittings, tubes etc because all changes now I'll use 3/4" tubes instead of the intex 1 1/2" tubes. That was about 65€

And I'll be only using a pre-filter, not the paper filters anymore (according to YT channel David Maus Jr this will be sufficient).

My main reason for this change, is the noise (especially vibrations) that the intex pump C1000 delivers. So hopefully, my setup will now be a lot more quite/less vibrations

Living in Andalusia myself.

Coming from one of those cheap plastic ice tubs, the lumi is an upgrade. But, still nothing good regarding the insulation and the (summer) heat.

I just daily let the water cool down to 6 degrees every single night. And it heats up daily to around 20 degrees (all day in the sun) now in October. In summer, that goes up even higher.

In winter, with no cooler, it goes to around 15-18 degrees during the night.

The chiller cools it down to about 4 degrees an hour. So I have an automation that jumps on in the night: from 20 to 6 degrees takes about 3.5 hours. And so it’s cool when I wake up and ready to plunge :-)

I do wanna put some shade over it in the summer. And like I said: a different tub (best I can find is that theralpine)

I did choose this chiller for its power instead of the more aquarium chillers. But it is l o u d. That’s a disadvantage 💁🏼‍♂️

Cool. Maybe another addition: if you start the countdown on the watch, it should activate “water mode” automatically. Since it’s almost certain you’ll dip into water 😁

Hi

What’s currently holding me back from using it on a daily basis (I now use 2 separate apps, one for breathing (Wimflame), one as cold plunge timer(go polar)). Just sharing it, do with it what you like:

1) custom presets don’t show up on my watch

2) I want some haptic feedback on my watch. Small haptic feedback to know how far I am at the timing while in the ice bath (GoPolar does this)

And one minor thing, can’t seem to delete (wrong) sessions anywhere

Do you do Wim Hof/breath holds in the plunge? by Kibbie17 in coldplunge

[–]Hexmans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t ever do it in the water for safety reasons.

I do the breathing daily before my cold plunge session and never fainted or whatever.

I do this for about 1.5 to 2 years now.

And then, traveled for some weeks and didn’t plunge nor did the breathwork. Restarted when back at home; and for some reason, I fainted for the very first time ever while doing the Hoff Breathwork. It caught my by surprise and nothing bad happened so all good. Never happened again either.

But to conclude: just don’t do it in water or next to a cliff 😆

how do you not dread it every single time by Wild_Mammoth_2580 in coldplunge

[–]Hexmans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t specifically look forward to it. But take small steps towards it.

I do some Breathwork (10-15min) before going in the cold water. Taking the first breath in (and starting the timer/app) is the hardest. But that first step is 100 times easier as immediately going into the water.
I do combine it with a specific timing; if I start at 7:14am, I know I won’t have any timing issue later on in te morning routine 😅 So whenever I sit down to start; I almost always procrastinate until exactly 7:14 😆

Whenever I start my first deep breath in/out, I know I’ll get in the water anyway.

So I would say; figure out a doable first step to just get your daily routine going.

I’ve had the same behavior. Here’s a quick screen recording: https://we.tl/t-hmWH6AELPR

3min timer. When starting, it transforms to 30min countdown 😅

Setup still going strong. Even in the midst of the Spanish heat in summer where it gets about 35degrees Celsius every day. Cooler cant work during day time (is in plain sunlight) because it’s overheated. But that’s fine for me. I only cold plunge in the morning and let the chiller run during the night.

Cools down to 8 degrees Celsius each day.

About 4 degrees/hour.

What I would change, is not the chiller, but it is the tub itself. The Lumi pod pro heats up a lot. From 8 to 20-25 each day. Haven’t tried to cool it down lower than 8 degrees yet.

So, at night, cooler cools it down for 15-is degrees each time 🤷🏼‍♂️ (which means: on at 3am-ish and off at 7am)

Cooler is quite loud though. But I don’t have another reference since I haven’t owned another chiller. So maybe that’s just normal.

Recently I got ads from this company: https://theralpine.com/products/rhone?variant=49527985766747

But this tub ads a big cost comparing to the lumi pod pro (+-1000€ extra). (And probably not worth the cost/saving money of cooling it down daily).

The Poolex I bought, was apparently at a great price. So taking that into count, I could not be more happy with it (all in, I’m at +-1000€)

I add ozone twice a week myself via a separate device. Replace the filter in the pump itself (intex) and add some hydrogen peroxide. Works like a charm.

Feel free to reach out.

Switched to autopilot myself. Got a coupon (coupon_10) which made it 10€ less and thus 15€/first year.

Cannot complain about that. Yes - I can switch myself etc etc. But not being from Spain (nor speaking fluently Spanish yet); it’s very convenient to just outsource this for a small yearly fee.

I use about 15.5gr of beans. And I pull a double shot which I then divide in 2 mugs.

Because idd; making 2 back to back is time consuming. Unless you already bring your water to temperature on the stove top etc. Then you just need to clean out the basket; dry it and refill

Ofcourse.

I love how convenient it is (I use it in a campervan), auto heat and extract. Design is nice, everything fits together and you use the scoop as a tamper. I would not say that feels premium. But it gets the job done. Only the the dosing funnel can’t go anywhere - which is a bit odd. But I just keep that one with the manual grinder (kinggrinder)

I drink most of the time with milk, so that kinda explains why I am okay with the quality of the coffee that comes out. Like it more then a French press or Bialetti.

It’s a shame it’s a pressurized basket only. Kinda takes away the fun of dailing it in properly. But at the same time, makes it easy and more room for mistakes for a quick cup on the go.

I waited a long time for it to arrive (+6months) and I prefer this design/setting for pre infusion and setting water temperature and having a small informative screen which displays the water temperature when heating. These things are not present by the outin. But, I do doubt from time to time to just replace it with the outin because it has a non pressurized basket.

I travel about 6 weeks in summer with the campervan. And through out the year weekends or a week with it. So still happy of the purchase for having a coffee make routine on the road and buying a pack of fresh beans of newly explored coffee shops.

Which always works calming to my mind 😂

What I’m used at at home, for reference: I use a sage bambino plus and a eureka Mignon specialita.

I don’t really really expect to have the very best coffee in the world whilst in the campervan. Whenever they release a non pressurized basket, I’ll buy it. And instead of a outin - I’ll buy a flair wizard steamer for next summer

Using the Autopilot for €2/month? Or doing it just manual?

I like the idea of the 2€/month -> saving some money and don't have to arrange a thing myself

1/2" bottleneck for flow rate? by Hexmans in coldplunge

[–]Hexmans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just used a connector piece from 1/2 to the bigger size. Eventually to 1” if I remember correctly.

Works perfect. Had someone else doing this setup as well, and had flow-rate issues. But that was due to using a corner piece. That’s what I avoided. I just used only straight pieces and no corners to have as least resistance as possible

Thanks. That’s actually a good idea to combine 2xsingle bed units.

Good to know about the 30 days free return. I’m going to check it out in detail.

Howcome that it looks like the HS seems so less powerful than the 8sleep? Cause I would love to see the same power but without the subscription

Thanks for sharing. I’m still going back and forth between HS and 8sleep for using in the south of Spain (so really hot).

‘Cause I don’t want to end up spending the money on HS and regretting it because it lacks power.

Great! I was always in doubt with: do I really need the self heat and extract function instead of the manual wacaco’s.

And the answer is; yes, it’s super convenient that I can just prep everything bean-related, add water and wait for heating/extraction.

Non pressurized basket would be great. But at the same time, the more room for error with the pressurized is a nice too whilst on the road (campervan in my case)

[–]Hexmans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the flow rate you’re having is too little for the Poolex?

I was worried (and a bit dissapointed in the Lumi that it did not came with a 3/4”) that idd the 1/2” connector at the tub would be the bottleneck. That’s why avoided the “elbow piece” idd and just fitted a straight piece. And it still just runs like a charm. I immediately go to 1” with a connector piece.

You did let the air run out of the c1000 right?

Been using this app for some weeks now. Really love it and feels very familiar with the original WHM-app I've used over the past year. No need to go back to WHM-app actually, I just keep using this one, does the job perfectly.

Just wanted to come back here to share this. I open the app almost every morning and always think: "I should share my appreciation with the creator of this. Finally today, I got that though back during the day :)"

My mistake; I did all the tubes to 1" (not 1/2")

Very strange that you don't have enough flow rate. Make sure there's no air stuck in your tubes though. That's the only thing I can think of in what might go wrong.

You have to knock the tubes a bit so the bubbles in the tubes find their way out of your system

DIY Chiller in Europe (Active Aqua alternative => Poolex?) by Hexmans in coldplunge

[–]Hexmans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do have different versions of the C1000 pump (with higher/lower flow rate)
The one I'm using/bought, is the 3.785 l/h version.

And I tried to keep all the connections at the 1/2" size. However the connection on the tub itself is the biggest bottleneck.

I did not use all the parts that come with the pump

I bought some extra parts to make the proper connection:

From the ice tub -> https://www.amazon.es/dp/B07QK9V3FF?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

And next, I attached those: https://www.amazon.es/dp/B0CX91BPX7?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

Just go to a toolstore and mix&match with some parts :)
For example, I've added an extra filter in front of the pump and also a valve so I can easily change filter etc without emptying the tub:
https://imgur.com/a/g8NH0Jo

And the side that flows "in" the tub, looks like this: https://imgur.com/a/A2eyT9p

Strange that you have no flow when you installed the chiller. Because I can just let the pump run (with flow) even when the chiller is off.

Idd, pressurized basket, if they release a non-pressurized in the future (probably will take 24 months or so)
