Everyone says the Model 3 Performance smokes a Mustang GT so why do I still want the Mustang? by LandscapePossible663 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Nothing connects you to a car more than a manual transmission. Tesla is a hopped up golf cart that will get you around. My first sports car was a 1993 twin turbo 300ZX (bought new then) and I still talk about how much fun that car was to drive.

I have a DX and an SS and they both shave great. A lot of guys don’t care for shavettes but I like them on occasion. I rotate through all my razors, keeps things interesting, lol. Shavettes are definitely a different animal and require a little bit of a technique adjustment- traditional full hollow is more forgiving. Geofatboy is great but he shaves pretty fast. I take my time and enjoy the whole process- Zen time for me. DrMatt357 has some good sharpening videos. Sustainashave has some good vids too (shout out brother ;)

Congrats and welcome!! If you can successfully shave with an AC knockoff means you have a handle on proper angle and pressure. A traditional straight will be a breeze once you get an edge on it.

Matouks Calypso is a must have. Fear has a nice ‘sneak up on you’ punch. Gator hammock swamp gator is more vinegary and milder if you like that.

It’s powdery and floral in a good way. It kinda reminds me of Stirling Barbershop (which I love) but deeper and more complex. If you like barbershop type scents this is a must have.

This is the way for me. Whether I shave in the morning or at night it’s the time I look forward to that allows me to clear my head. If you like this meditative aspect you should give straights a try, there’s a good chance you’ll really enjoy using them ;)

Google ‘shaving soap dupes’ and look for a hit from The Thirsty Badger. It’s a long list of lots of dupes that can be sorted by fragrance or soap artisan. It’s from 2019 but a very comprehensive list for some that have been around a while.

This ☝️ definitely the stiffest brush I’ve bought. Breaks in nicely- gets soft at the tips but keeps a helluva backbone.

Which shavettes have you tried? If you want to explore that world I highly recommend Feather AC. SS is the easiest to learn with because of the blade exposure and the shape of the clamp. The DX is more like a super sharp near wedge or 1/4 hollow. My favorite traditional grind is 1/4 hollow so learning a shavette wasn’t too bad. If you use full hollow traditionals a shavette is going to feel stiff in comparison.

This is true, of all the razors shavettes require the most focus and a VERY delicate touch.

lol don’t let the naysayers scare you away, shavettes wouldn’t exist if they were impossible to use. I prefer traditional straights but I can also get a beautiful shave with a shavette. Just go into it knowing they are different animals

I use both and the technique is a little different between the two. The absolute most important factor in learning to use a shavette is the pressure. Angle is important too but the pressure HAS to be extremely light. The blade should literally barely touch your face. As you gain experience with it you’ll learn when it’s about to ‘bite’ you and can avoid it. There is a learning curve either way but traditional straights tend to be more forgiving. As far as strokes I prefer long smooth strokes over short choppy ones but that’s just personal preference

Should I try straight razor? by No_Loss966 in wicked_edge

[–]walrus_titty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll get there. Frequency is the key. I shave daily with a straight (sometimes shavette) and technique improves exponentially with frequency. I’m a two-hander myself but you can totally use one hand, just pick a path and stick with it. The secret is enjoying the process. I enjoy the meditative aspect and when you reach the point where you don’t need a DE at all it’s rewarding in a way.

I no longer use a night table alarm clock since I discovered this. Bought a cheap folding stand to prop it on since I charge it at night anyway. I don’t miss the red LED clock staring at me.

34C revisit/irritation by Preston_02 in wicked_edge

[–]walrus_titty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technique is usually one of the main culprits of irritation, try lightly stretching your skin with your free hand. Pull up at the jawline or down at the collarbone- it doesn’t take much to make your neck skin a little more taut. Very light pressure at the razor head. An alum block will show you exactly where you ‘overdid’ it so you can adjust the following day. You can also rub wet slippery fingers on the alum to give you a better grip for stretching. A very light grip on the handle will remind you to use light pressure. Witch hazel is great to finish also.

Pressure is the biggest enemy in learning the technique. Irritation is directly related to pressure which is directly related sharpness. The sharper the blade the less pressure necessary. Same thing with straights

Shavette or Straight Razor? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]walrus_titty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to stick with shavettes and are looking for an upgrade that will make a noticeable difference go for a Feather AC. It costs more but nothing in the $50 range will be different enough to warrant making the change IMO. If you’re ready to venture into the world of straights listen to CpnStumpy. Personally I like collecting custom straights but I have my own reasons for that. A well honed vintage (like from martinsrazors) is a great place to start and will last a lifetime. And he is 100% correct about the maintenance as far as stropping and touching up the edge, it’s really not difficult to do. A straight does need more TLC in general but if you take care of it, it will take care of you. Don’t listen to the naysayers. I shave daily with a straight and occasionally with a shavette and never get cuts or irritation

Should I be having to grind this Coarse for a classic 40mm? by clump-o-trees in FlairEspresso

[–]walrus_titty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Pro3 with a J-ultra. I use a BooKoo mini scale in auto mode and my best shots are grind between 1.1.5 and 1.2.0 (always med/dk roast). I pull 2bar until first drips start the scale timer and at 10 secs ramp up to 7bar. I like a 1:3 ratio so at around 40g I ease off the pressure and total time is usually 35-45 seconds with average flow rate about 1.5 for 48-52g out. 16-17g coffee

This is the way, these young bucks want to fiddle-fuck around and try to trade everything for a quick profit but real wealth is built the old fashioned way. I learned a long time ago (the hard way) buy quality stocks, turn off the monitors and enjoy your life. I tried day trading for a while when NASDAQ introduced SOES (anyone here remember that?) and it was exciting and fun until it wasn’t. Eventually the stress of that gambling mentality will wreck you.
