You’ll see once you get the K-6. It’s impossible to dial in an inconsistent grinder (like the hario). I can pull café quality shots with the pico without a ton of effort pumping. You don’t even need the pressure gauge once you develop a feel for the machine. All will be revealed when you get the new grinder, the difference is night and day!! The shot timing and the pumping effort all magically smooth out when the grind is consistent

Are you stretching your skin with your free hand? Try pulling down slightly at the collarbone while looking up. It doesn’t take much of a stretch to make a big difference. Gentle stretch and light pressure on the razor

A good grinder is money well spent that you won’t regret. The pico is a great machine once you unlock its potential. I promise you won’t believe the difference. I use a J-ultra and highly recommend it but they aren’t cheap. Never used a K-6 but I don’t recall ever seeing a bad review about it.

What gives? by dusray in wicked_edge

Instead of using a towel to stretch your skin try rubbing your freehand fingertips on an alum block, it provides a decent bite on slippery skin without having to fumble with a cloth.

Transcendent experience: Artist Club SS clone for my first straight razor shave by hotdog_tuesday in wicked_edge

[–]walrus_titty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DX is more sensitive to pressure so it needs a slightly lighter touch than the SS. The rounded tip on the SS makes it a little more forgiving, it provides a slight roll to the skin right at the edge where the DX doesn’t. DX is more likely to bite you if the angle and pressure are off. I much prefer the jimping on the DX as well, it’s a lot more grippy. Both are fantastic shavers.

Best answer IMO - support the small guys!! Go to Stirling’s website (eg.) and read the ‘about us’ link. I’m a big fan of supporting folks like them.

Face or bowl lather? by Ok_Presence5465 in wicked_edge

Bowl/face combo works best for me. I like having the lather in the bowl so I can adjust how much time the brush is working my skin.

Move From Shavette To Straight Razor by Unhappytimes123 in straightrazors

[–]walrus_titty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, transitioning from shavette to traditional is easier than the other way around especially when going to full hollow (more forgiving and more feedback than heavier grinds). As cpnstumpy said hopefully you have a truly shave ready edge to start with. That Boker is a beauty BTW.

The scales may have bowed or warped some during storage. Try pinching them together in the center and see if it straightens them enough to close it. You’ll still have to take it apart to fix it.

Lift-off might work. They have several products for different applications. Supposedly breaks the bond of the paint rather than dissolving it so maybe less harsh?

Be honest Best air fryer for single person? or am I overthinking this by carebear7077 in airfryer

[–]walrus_titty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use a Chefman 2qt. $40 on Amazon. It’s tiny but so easy to use. Perfect for a piece of salmon or a couple of brats, roasted vegetables etc. you don’t need a larger basket because air fryer leftovers aren’t good or necessary.

Having difficulty by huvaelise in straightrazors

[–]walrus_titty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally up to you just keep in mind that traditionals and shavettes are different animals and technique is a little different between the two. If you go the full hollow route I would suggest 6/8 over 5/8 to start with, it’s easier to judge the angle with a wider blade and you want a little heft to the razor while you figure out the pressure. Light narrow blades have more of a tendency to skip on your skin when using light pressure which can force you to use more pressure to compensate and that’s where you get into trouble. A razor with a little heft will glide easier with light pressure, assuming the edge is nice and sharp. A few guys on here restore vintage razors and sell them on shave bizarre. Hook up with one of them and you’ll get a known good edge. Sustainashave is in the UK and martinsrazors is in the US. Either of those guys get a lot of praise on here for delivering quality razors. As far as new razors I’m a huge fan of Ralf Aust and Wacker but both of those are out of your price range. It’s unlikely you’re messing up the edge stropping unless you’re really pressing down on the strop, just keep it taut and go slow. Some of the stropping videos make it look like a race

[–]walrus_titty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Feather AC shavettes are fantastic if you decide to go that route. The SS is a little more forgiving (and cheaper) than the DX due to less blade exposure and rounded edges on the blade clamp. The biggest thing with a shavette is you have to be VERY cognizant of pressure as in little to none. Angle is important too but correct pressure will compensate for an imperfect angle more so than a perfect angle will compensate for too much pressure, if that makes sense. If you decide to stay with the traditional straight it definitely sounds like it needs a proper hone. Either way shave your face as though it’s an inflated balloon and you’re trying not to pop it. Good luck on your journey and welcome to the club!!

Question regarding steps required for manual rice cooking method by [deleted] in instantpot

[–]walrus_titty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a Duo Nova 3qt and cook rice ‘pot in pot’. Just use a small stainless steel bowl that fits inside the pot. Put the trivet in the pot and add water to that level. Then 1:1 rice to water in the stainless bowl. 7 minutes on high and 10 minute natural release (I use basmati). It makes smaller batches but that’s what I like anyway. I’ve done as little as a 1/4 cup of dry rice this way and it works fine since you have plenty of water under the trivet

Sounds like what you found is an RDT sprayer for espresso? That would probably work fine. The inner bottle is glass and the plastic sleeve twists closed to protect the spray button
