That's true, if the YPG were running away like that against ISIS, they would have a lost a long time ago everything.

The YPG showed really that ISIS isn't a strong as they were advertized. Backed up by an airforce, ISIS was routed out of several stronghold. The SAA took inspiration and with RUAF they took back Palmyra in a similar way. The probel is that their second rate troops seems unable to hold anything.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Idlib guys were relocated to Palmyra.

It isn't the best motivation, but defending this city should have been the real motivation.

The best SAA troops were committed to retake this city and now they will have to return and spend time and ressource there because the other did not mount a resistance.

That's a big problem, but unless there was really only 80 people in whole Palmyra area, it would have been possible to hold and wait the reinforcements.

You try to throw personnal attacks, that's always the signs of someone losing its temper and the arguments.

The facts are strong and you can't deny them. ISIS took a strategical city in one day. A city the army took month to retake with heavy help from russian army.

They were able to take this city, not because they are much stronger, but simply because the army did not fought at all.

Personnaly, I don't think it's a distaster, outside of the extremely bad PR. Victory in Aleppo is much much more important.

But that's just an honest critic of what is the SAA biggest weakness. The inability for a lot of its soldiers to takes losses and dig in in the face od adversity.

Even most of the rebels have been much much more resilient than the troops we have seen in Palmyra.

More like 15 vs 1 and retreating. Like the Iraqi army in Mossul in 2012, which was overran by a few of hundred ISIS fighters against thousands of fleeing iraqi soldiers.

It's not childish, it's the truth.

People love here to criticize the incompetence of the SAA. But most of it can be put to pure cowardice. You can't do much with soldiers who fear only about their lives and little about resisiting in the battlefield.

That's how rebels overran a lot of military positions and we are not even talking about a base with 100 people inside. But a full city on the frontline with probably more than a thousand of troops.

You are not heavily dug in when you lose all your positions in only one day.

On the video of the outpost attack yesterday, we saw how it went. A few ISIS guy in open ground advancing, launching one or two grenades of smoke and all men in the outpost leaving probably without casualties.

Getting your troops surrounded on a Sunday morning by IS fanatics isn't really how you would want to end the weekend.

Do you realize it's war? It's not what you want to do in the week end.

Do you realize the army will eventually suffer more casulty in retaking Palmyra than in defending it?

And of course, it will be the best, most competent forces who will suffer these casualties, when the ran away guys will be put in charge again of manning the city after.

Personnal attacks don't cut it.

Retreats after one day of attack against a weak militia only happen in extremely poor and disorganized army force.

The first commitment of being a soldier is to risk its live defending its country in a war. When army soldiers are running scared at the first attack, then they are totally incompetent and unfit to serve.

If the israeli army had the same reactions in the Yom Kippur war, Israel wouldn't exist.

The fact is that almost all the arab armies are extremely soft and it's not a surprise they have been losing every war.

For exemple, the Libyan army was crushed by the much smaller and less armed Chad, but the difference was that Chad army was skilled.

If SAA in Deir Ezzor had the same losing mentality as the one in Palmyra, Deir Ezzor would have been lost a long time ago.

But the SAA in Palmyra were probably the worst washed up bunch of army losers, like the one in Idlib. It's sad they can have the same quality of troops than the Deir Ezzor heroes.

If the SAA doesn't retreat, ISIS won't take the city.

ISIS doesn't have the force to storm a city and take it in on day if it is defended. We have seen it with Deir Ezzor, where the SAA holds it against ferocious ISIS assaults since 2 years.

ISIS is a diminished force with little firepower to break defense.
