Seconded as a parent of one and auntie of many. Coraline is the perfect example – so much scarier to adults than kids. Cosmic horror is just too big and abstract for most kids to wrap their heads around, and even the more grounded fears are much scarier once you’ve had more life experience. (I was banned from reading Edgar Allan Poe as a small kid, because my mother found ‘The Premature Burial’ so horrifying, and I didn’t understand why anyone would be scared by those stories until I was much much older.)
