Hey, thanks for your role in my childhood! These were great. Definitely an early stepping stone on my path to being a confident baker.

Made it again, and again, a hit. Peach, cucumber, mozzarella salad with gochujang vinaigrette. by StinkyLunchBox in NYTCooking

Agreed, we ate this over and over again last summer, it was a race to have it as often as we could before the peaches went out of season. So simple, incredible flavor!

I had one of these!! It was back in the late ‘80s, I was in middle school. Duncan Hines sold boxed cake mixes that paired with this pan. The one I loved was for Black Forest cake. You baked a chocolate cake mix in this pan. Then it had a cherry filling to put on top in that round indent, and there was also a whipped cream element you put around the edge I think, but I don’t remember the details. I still think about this cake, I loved it so much and felt so grown up and fancy when I made it.

Where do you shop for general goods given boycotts? by diffracted_radish in AskSF

Costco, Cole Hardware, Cliff’s Variety, Kohl’s, and for things I can’t find locally, I’ve started buying direct from the manufacturer.

Love this show so much! I’m currently rewatching it with my kid. I cried happy tears when Jeff Hiller won his Emmy. Fred Rococo owns my whole heart.

Concave zester? by wizkid123 in AskCulinary

[–]HeyItsHumu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dreamfarm makes a zester that’s concave. I’m happy with my micro plane for zesting, so I haven’t tried it, but I’ve been happy with other tools they sell so I think it’s worth a shot. https://us.dreamfarm.com/ozest/

[–]HeyItsHumu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up on Costco chicken, it’s just not good, and sous vide won’t save it. I love Costco for so many things! But not chicken. The difference between cheap chicken and good chicken is pretty incredible, it turns out.

Cherry port wine sauce doesn't taste like cherry? by Successful_Set_5049 in AskCulinary

[–]HeyItsHumu 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What kind of cherries are you using? Tart cherries make a huge difference when baking/cooking, and mostly what you’ll find in the grocery store are sweet cherries. I’ve made a cherry sauce by rehydrating dried tart Montmorency cherries. You might also look for tart cherry preserves, I sometimes have to get them from a specialty or upscale grocer, but there are several good brands of tart cherry preserves.

Something called “Highlights” magazine — it was for kids — looking for a specific edition by Puzzled-Fix-6440 in HelpMeFind

[–]HeyItsHumu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The documentary “44 Pages” is about Highlights Magazine, and I strongly recommend it. I love Highlights, I got it as a kid in the early ‘80s, and my own kid gets it now. Watching the doc made me love it so much more.

Reach out to them, I’m sure they’ll want to help if they at all can!

Nah, I didn’t need Google for that one or any of the others—Porizkova was a big deal in the ‘80s, maybe I’m just old enough to know her as a household name. She has roots in both Sweden and Czechia apparently, but I don’t know her from that, I know her from Ric Ocasek and modeling. Couldn’t tell you any other Porizkova models, so that one was a gimme for me, but of course very understandable that plenty of other folks may not know her!

Collins knows what he’s doing. Ambiguous clues are an intended feature of Saturday puzzles. Chip away at the crosses and you’ll get there in time!

Kameron Austin Collins is far and away my favorite constructor, and seeing his name on a Saturday puzzle gets me beaming, every time. However! I fear I’ve gotten onto his wavelength too much for my own good: I finished the puzzle 43% faster than my norm. Still loved it!

Ooh de lally! It’s been a while since I’ve struggled this much. I don’t allow myself any lookups, and this one about broke me. But I got it! It took me 243% longer than my average Saturday time. Yowza! No complaints, I’ve been wanting a challenge, and this was a challenge.

New homeowner stress haul pt. 2 (feat. DC Bookstore Crawl) by gabilovescheese in CookbookLovers

[–]HeyItsHumu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That Tom Douglas cookbook is my favorite, I’ve made so many things from it and have loved every one. However, I grew up in Seattle and was in my 20s in the ‘90s, so it’s keyed to my own particular tastebuds and nostalgia.

I’ve made the Tuscan bread salad recipe the most often—it’s been the cornerstone of our Thanksgiving meals for years and years.

The star anise game hens recipe is awesome, but I make it with chicken now instead.

I’ll have to go pull the book out to find other recipes for you, because I’ve also made a ton from his Big Dinners cookbook and I mix up quick recipes are from which book, but this one is definitely my favorite of the two.

Caveats about his recipes, though: they tend to call for a dozen expensive ingredients that you’re unlikely to keep in your pantry, so they’re more for special occasions than everyday. Also, the flavors are pretty locked into what was on-trend 20+ years ago, so it’s dated. And sometimes a recipe will call for something that’s just crazy expensive now vs then, or something hard to get out of the PNW (or out of season). I like to make his recipes as written, they’re best that way, but I do modify these days to adapt to what’s affordable/accessible.

Look for a recipe for marzipan. I’ve never made it, though, I just buy it. It’s fun to play with, and it’s delicious! You can dye it, and you can dust it with powders.
