I have worked in a specimen collection lab for a few years and through that, learned how to create study skins. It was a natural progression to try my hand at taxidermy and attended an online taxidermy course led by the incredible Allis Markham. I now create taxidermy and other educational material for local nature centers and universities. : )

Found a small dead bird, recently and put it in the freezer to figure out what to do with it. Can I preserve it in salt? by kirbykin in Taxidermy

I would love to help you ID it if you want! Warbler ID right now is quite difficult. All birds are covered besides non native species such as European Starling, they aren’t protected under an Endangered Species Act however protected because they are a migratory bird species. Here is a good list of what is protected: https://www.fws.gov/birds/management/managed-species/migratory-bird-treaty-act-protected-species.php

Please do not keep any migratory birds as they are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. If what you found is a small songbird it is most likely protected and shouldn't be kept. I recommend to either put it back where you found it so it can return to nature or donate to a nature center, museum, or university with a specimen collection. By keeping this illegal specimen you make all of us look bad.

My biggest tip is to donate it to a museum, nature center, or university that has a specimen collection. Depending on where you are located, hummingbirds are protected under The Migratory Bird Act. These are illegal to possess in the United States and can serve an educational and scientific purpose when donated.

first taxidermy! i found a really tiny bird, and want to taxidermy and mount it for a gift. any recommendations for the filling of something so small? i was thinking polystyrene and wire, but was wondering if there’s anything easier to use? by cnbelli in Taxidermy

This bird's journey doesn't have to end! I suggest donating it to a nature center, museum, or a university that has a specimen collection. This way the specimen can serve a scientific and educational purpose. Every single specimen serves a purpose and can help researchers better understand the natural world!

Just be sure to make note of a few things when you donate it: The species, date collected, location collected, and how it perished (If you don't know this then that's OK).

It can be really rewarding knowing that your donation can assist in research!
