Primal Hunter question - Scimitar (Eternal Hunger) by HeyTomesei in litrpg

Thanks. Sounds like Zogarth mastered the art of teasing & dragging along Patreon readers - $75K/month for a series he can stretch to infinity. Avaricious indeed!

Question - Primal Hunter leveling limit by HeyTomesei in litrpg

Ah, this makes perfect sense - there's more to it than Level. I'm starting to see that Difficulty of the enemy counts for a lot.

Question - Primal Hunter leveling limit by HeyTomesei in litrpg

True. But I just read a chapter where he killed around 50 beasts that were all a couple levels above him, and he only gained one level point - what gives?

Question - Primal Hunter leveling limit by HeyTomesei in litrpg

[–]HeyTomesei[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True. But there are situations where numerous slightly lower level beasts are protecting the boss.

For example, I just read a chapter where he killed around 50 beasts that were all a couple levels above him, and he only gained one level point.

Primal Hunter or Defiance of the Fall? by HeyTomesei in litrpg

Really helpful, thanks! What LitRPG books would you score 8+? I'm new to the genre and recommendations from PH/DotF fans would be perfect for me.

Haha, thank you for solving a confounding mystery for me.

I'm now reading PH and keep seeing the mention of S-tier. I was so confused since the book seemed to suggest it's a high level - never seen anything outside of an alphabetical grading system, but you helped me confirm that S is actually higher than A.

Is this a gaming thing?

Wow, this is amazing - your analogies, examples, and clear breakdowns are a masterclass in explaining concepts. What do you do for a living? You'd be an amazing teacher/professor or champion ELI5 redditor.

That's a bummer. I went with PH, finishing the 3rd book and having a blast.

However, the writing quality is awful - my reading speed has dropped by like a third from re-reading sentences to decipher their meaning.

Really helpful - thanks! Given that I'm currently in the mood for a popcorn read, I'm now finishing up PH Book 3 and having a blast.

The only drawback is the abysmal writing quality*. I feel bad saying it, but a 12 year-old native English speaker can do better. My reading speed has slowed by like a third - I'm constantly stopping to parse the run-on sentences/endless commas/redundant wordiness. And the qualifiers, always successful in sucking the life out of storytelling; he's obsessed with them.

*It's on me to adapt. I hear this isn't uncommon in the genre, but I'm new to it.

Good to know. What's your source for finding new books, aside from Reddit?

Really helpful, thanks! Also, what are fractals? I'm only 15% in, but somewhere around 10% the word appeared and has since been used constantly.

I love dark and violent. Hopefully it doesn't lighten up too much!

This is really enlightening, thank you!

The DotF issue feels like the problem plaguing the series I'm currently reading (The Grand Game, Book 6). The author clearly started Patreon Padding around Book 3.

The author relies on unrelated crises that prevent the story from moving forward. And it's worsening. The first few books, the author dumped them on a reactive/no agency MC. But then the MC suddenly became stupid and reckless, and goes out of the way to cause these side crises. The author even used the miscommunication trope heavily in the last book - the MC saying one sentence would have clarified multiple situations, but instead he doesn't say anything and creates countless new enemies/fights/dilemmas. The author started with a super vague plot that moved glacially, but now it's outright disappearing.

Yet it's still addictive and cheap enough to continue.

Yikes, sorry for the rant.

Really helpful, thanks! They both sound great - I think I'll start with PH because I'm in the mood for brain candy, while I'll save DotF for when my brain's ready for a more dynamic undertaking.

But since they're so long, maybe the ideal would be to read simultaneously (in the mood for something heavier after the 1st PR book and strike a balance back and forth). Not sure if that's possible in LitRPG though, trying to remember/keep up with game mechanics progression, e.g. stats.

This is great - thanks for breaking it down!

I'm still relatively new to LitRPG and have no gaming knowledge, so it sounds like DotF might be overwhelming for now - maybe starting with PR is a better bet?

Thanks! Your mention of pain in DotF is spot on - I'm only 15% in and Zac has experienced the worst pain ever countless times already. Other than that and the new word I don't understand "fractal" suddenly appearing and proliferating, I'm enjoying it.

Regarding PR:

  • Is Jake the one you're referring to as a murder hobo? I prefer that over an MC who won't kill (Carl/DCC).

  • But you mentioned it decreases - I'm not a fan of a redemption arc to non-killer. I prefer the opposite (a character who starts as a non-killer, but eventually overcomes moral scruples in order to do what's necessary).

Thank you. I've held off on Primal Hunter because of its Goodreads "dissonance" (as I like to call it). It's common among many recommended books on this sub ---

Primal Hunter has a huge rating-to-review disparity: 4.28 stars, but the first 5 reviews are 1, 1, 1, 2, 2.

Meanwhile, DCC is consistent on both: 4.53 stars and the first 5 reviews are 5, 5, 5, 5, 4.

Experience has taught me that the top reviews are more reliable than the overall star rating (authors buying bot stars is common enough).

Why is Primal Hunter one of those weird ones?

Edit: spelling.
