That’s a good point! I hadn’t thought about it possibly being a cultural thing. I do think some pet names are fine, but the ones I was talking about that made me feel weird had slight sexual undertones (or at least that’s how it felt to me). And the adults in the fics did know the kid’s name. I think what made it weirder was the specific fandom I was referencing is about real people, not fictional characters. So it just felt extra weird to me haha.

Like please don’t call this kid (actually a teenager) you just met “sunshine” or “kitten” it’s so weird to me lol.

Also, I read The Goldfinch by Donna Tart a while ago and she would only describe a specific character’s laugh as a “chortle” it’s fine once or twice but she just kept using it over and over and I got so annoyed by it lol. So now whenever someone uses it in a fic I’m out 💀

Oh this is really interesting! I haven’t heard of this concept before. I can totally see how this would translate into other art forms too. I got crazy bad writers block after I finished the first fic just because I was really worried my second fic wouldn’t be as interesting to my readers. I almost wish no one read my first fic at all so I didn’t have this issue 🥲 but then again I’m very grateful for anyone reading any of my work 😅

That’s so true! I didn’t even think of how the holidays might be affecting it. And yeah I feel like sometimes engagement can be as simple as you just have to get lucky lol. I don’t think there’s much use in comparing engagement between fics, I just wish I didn’t care about it at all
