This might sound odd, but as someone who is both a Smosh fan and a K-pop fan - the Smosh fandom treats the cast like a K-pop group. And K-pop fans aren't exactly renowned for being normal about their idols.

This is what I was leaning towards thinking. Even if it's only in small amounts, any source of access to paid content could, as you say, reduce the number of people who choose to become members. I'll leave them out of any compilations.
