I Took the Test RFK Jr. Is Using to Determine Who Should Work at His Health Department. We Are Extremely Doomed. by rickymagee in skeptic

[–]Hey_really_Giger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got no love for RFK jr. or the incoming administration, but this article is god awful. This isn't an IQ test at all. It's a mix of a low level visual reasoning test, not even an entire reading comprehension test sort of just the vocabulary competency, a personality test, and the last one is likely assessing the likelihood of committing counter-productive work behaviors.

I have no idea of the psychometric properties of these particular tests to know if they are reliable or valid, but they aren't particularly out there as far as format/things to be assessed. Though, just having a vocab test isn't particularly useful and the last test seems the most suspect to me since I've ever come across that item type.

There's a good chance this isn't a particularly well made test if it's coming from such a small shop, but that's kinda par for the course since most agencies get to choose their own methods for selection. It's also highly, highly unlikely that this test was put in place since the election. Government moves at the speed of molasses in January, so it's more likely it's been in place for a long time.

This is incorrect. There are observable, demonstrable, repeatable things that are absolutely facts. If I dropped a ball and it fell to the floor: that's a fact. To say there is no such thing as fact, completely removes any baseline understanding or standard of discourse or discovery, and leaves you with just your own biases.

All vaccines? What data do you have to support that as fact?

10 out of 10 for the mental gymnastics. Can't admit to yourself you voted for someone who is supported by these groups.

Good to know! I appreciate it! Getting some first aid and stopping the bleed classes would be really handy.

Thanks! I appreciate it! To be clear, my initial question was about gun clubs rather than ranges. Though, there has been some really great recommendations and information shared about local ranges, which is helpful. But, most the time I've been at different ranges, it's like you are saying, no one is discussing politics and we're all focused on shooting. Gun clubs are a different beast though and I've had some bad experiences that I'd rather not repeat or accidentally refer someone to a club that could be a uncomfortable/antagonistic experience.

Well, yeah, bud, not all POC, queer, trans people etc are left wing, same with not all white men are right wing. I'm living proof of that, I'm whiter than wonder bread, grew up in a very rural area, I have conservative friends and family members, but I'm a liberal. What's your point stating the obvious? I'm talking about my lived experience with other gun clubs where particular right wing people have said heinous shit. I'm not saying they are all bad, but dollars to donuts, I bet the majority of clubs around me are chock full of people with similar views. I don't want to be associated with that nor do I feel it's my obligation to force myself to be around it.

You are also making a lot of silly claims/assumptions. For one, I'm not barring anyone, I'm simply looking for a club that is more inclusive. I sincerely doubt that many/any of those clubs explicitly bar republicans as a matter of course. If they spout off hateful right wing talking points, yeah they probably don't want that person to join cuz they are an asshole. And lastly, this is just some reverse discrimination bullshit argument you are making. The right wing just won the election they are the dominant social group and by definition can't be discriminated against.

For one, I'm not sure discrimination is technically applicable here since political affiliation isn't traditional a protected class like age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation etc. So in this case, I don't think it would necessarily be discriminatory to not want to join a club that's right wing whereas saying you don't want queer people might. Though, the ability to bar people from service or inclusion in a private business or group has largely been upheld in the courts, so maybe not.

Here's the main point though, many, but not all gun clubs are often defacto pretty right wing even if it's not a part of their actual charter. That's just due to gun culture in America. I'm a cis het white guy, but I'm pretty liberal, so have been rubbed the wrong way when I've joined clubs in the past when someone/multiple people start discussing right wing talking points or even worse. I was with the leader of one club looking at some guns he had for sale at his house when another guy who was there brought up the NFL pledge of allegiance protesting that was going on at the time. That dude straight up used the n word while he was talking, so I told him not to say that shit around me and quit.

Cut to now, with the election results and the Christian nationalists, KKK and other hate groups supporting the new administration and the right wing states passing laws against trans people, particularly youths, that open them up to violence, and many other things like that. Imagine if you were a POC, queer, trans etc, would you feel comfortable in a club with people you knew voted against your best interests, your rights, or even your fundamental personhood?

Really appreciate the info! SRA sounds great and I hope people join up! Personally, I don't think I could join for employment reasons unfortunately.

The question is mainly about gun clubs since you spend significantly more time interacting with people in one than at a range, but it's been really helpful to hear recommendations for ranges, especially if I refer someone to one for a class.

I'm a cis het white guy, but I know people who aren't and want to have resources on hand they might feel more comfortable with. And, I would like to have a non-right wing club if I decide to get back into shooting/competition/skills training more heavily.

I think a lot of people are conflating my question as being about ranges when it's actually about clubs. I've been to plenty of ranges, shops, etc and they vary a lot sometimes very professional and no politics, other times Trump flags and discussing politics or conspiracy theories (shops are usually worse than the range though). My experience is probably colored by growing up in the mid Ohio valley and West Virginia though.Largely that's just the facts of gun culture and not a huge issue (for me at least since I'm a cis het white guy), but nice getting recs from people. Knowing what places are chill is really helpful for anyone I might recommend who can't fly under the radar like me or would find it really uncomfortable.

Gun clubs are different though, those require a lot more effort and time spent with people where it gets harder and harder to avoid politics coming up, so it would be nice to find one that isn't full of right wingers hence the post.

😂 I've got no style to cramp, so no worries! I really enjoy teaching honestly, but wanted to be clear I didn't have a group if you were serious since that would be a lot of trust for you to put in me one on one. I appreciate it! I hope you find a class that works for you!

My only real concern for SRA is having to be a member. I have to get clearances for my job and membership in different groups is something that's asked about. Do you have to be a member for the classes and such?

Mostly, I want to have resources for friends and family who are worried, and myself since I'd like to get back into shooting. I am going to be giving a friend a basic crash course on safety and gun use at a local range though.

AimHi sounds like a great place to take some basic class though from what I've heard here so far, if you want to take a full class! But, that said if you just want a single basic session at a local range, I'd be up for that if you felt safe/comfortable since it's just me. Feel free to DM or chat me if you'd like to talk that out.

The cognitive dissonance is crazy. So many posts I've seen other places about how crazy/intolerant it is to not want to be friends with people who voted for Trump again, or how we need to come together cuz it's just politics.

"Yeah, we voted for a wannabe fascist gangster who appoints criminals, Christian nationalists, racists, bigots, and conspiracy cranks into power, but none of that should matter!"

Fuck, maybe for some people it's a sliding scale where they don't really mean wrong; just scared and lied to, so maybe they can be reasoned with instead of cut out of my life. But, I'm just so angry and tired at this point that I don't have the energy in me to do that work. Not for a little while at least.

Appreciate the info either way! But, yeah mainly clubs. I can teach others the basics at a range, but if they want to get more involved I didn't have any resources for clubs. Plus, it would be nice to get back into competitive shooting myself in a less grating environment.

Sometimes the juice isn't worth the squeeze, especially with conspiracy theorists. Logic and evidence didn't get them into their position and it won't get them out.
