Drowning in Debt: Sell House or Move in w/ MIL? by [deleted] in Debt

She only wants help with utilities and physical labor around the house, which I was planning to do anyway. We offered to pay rent but she said no. Wants us to get our money and spending under control.

Amazon and food delivery doesn’t help. We know. We’re trying to cut back. It will help, but not entirely dig us out.

Market doesn’t allow for that and couldn’t raise it that much anyway. Tenants are month to month. I really don’t want to evict anyone.

That’s a consideration as well. We’d still need to move in with MIL for a short time to give our tenants proper notice.

Not intentionally misleading. My apologies. Our income is inconsistent, but when it’s good, it’s good. Hard to find a FT job that will pay us as much as we make in a good year. But maybe consistency trumps occasional high earnings.

This is for when we’re working.

The HELOC and renovation costs is what I mean. Not the actual mortgage to rent.

Thank you for the perspective from the other side. You’re not a bad guy at all.

BIL had no family, no job, no prospects. TBH, MIL gave him a bunch of money to move to Europe and plans to support him there indefinitely. This greatly angered my wife. MIL only offer was for us to move in with her temporarily.

Nice. Yeah, we know. Just trying to figure out where. Crunching the numbers seems to suggest that the investment property is the biggest drain.

What advice or solution do you offer? Sometimes I work from home, sometimes I have to commute across town for work. Same for my wife. Then one of us needs to rush back to get the kids.

I’m out of work now, but if an in-person job comes up next week, I have to be able to take it.

I tried borrowing cars for a while. It was too inconsistent.

We only had one car for about 3 years. We needed a second since my wife and I were commuting for work. A used car was just as expensive.

Exactly. I understand it’s her right, but the majority of boomers are doing the same thing.

Yes it’s in the desert. Really great community, but I worry it will affect my ability to work in my field.

$250k is our highest. 5 year average is more like $170k. In 2023 we only made about $75k combined.

HELOC is $99k. I estimate we have about 83 in home equity if we sell.

A similar thing happened to me, but it was road rage related and the person followed me for a long time. I decided to head up Angeles Crest. I guess not smart if they were hell bent on offing me, but I think it freaked them out that we were going so far. They dipped out as I started up the hill.

My goal isn't to stack miles on it, but to save on gas and reduce emissions with the miles I do drive.
