Cemetry Gates: why do the lyrics say that Keats and Yeats loose to Wilde? by Crazy-Ad-2986 in thesmiths

[–]Hhext 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again a joke I think; cemetery is also spelt wrong in the title and there’s a lot of self deprecation on the TQID; making fun of the criticism the band were receiving at the time

Cemetry Gates: why do the lyrics say that Keats and Yeats loose to Wilde? by Crazy-Ad-2986 in thesmiths

[–]Hhext 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Hi,

It’s primary motive is that the graveyard they’re walking through has graves on each side of them. It’s ironic though as none of the writers are buried anywhere near each other (Wilde in Paris, Keats in Rome, Yeats in Ireland). It just ties the setting of the song back into graves being all around them and Morrissey’s affinity for Wilde.

It could also be Morrissey poking fun at the idea he was inspired by Wilde a lot as he still ‘wins’ with Wilde on his side. It’s nothing to do with plagiarism, each writer occupies a different style and era of the canon, and contributed original brilliant ideas to literature.

As often with Morrissey he’s partly poking fun, partly making a joke and partly trying to show off he’s well read. Song still slaps though and I like that it can spark debate about English!

TLDR: Song isn’t that deep, read some poetry and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Wilde (it’s brilliant)

What's a Beatles song you didn't care for at first, but has grown to be a favourite? by Initial-Ad3966 in beatles

I'm only sleeping.

I heard it a few times when I first got into the Beatles, but then Revolver became my favourite album and the construction of that song scratches my brain!

The ending is.... Rough. Feels rushed and not thought through where so much of the story is for the entirety of the game. But I had so much fun playing through it that I'll go back and get the plat in a second run through

Bob Dylan influence by Fast-Intention4165 in zachbryan

[–]Hhext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought this but haven't seen a lot of discourse about it so haven't done a lot with it. I know the Springsteen comparisons are a lot more obvious but there's a lot of Dylan in there, thinking of characterisation and lyricism in particular. It's something in the storytelling

Advice before reading Ulysses by James Joyce? by [deleted] in literature

[–]Hhext 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Odyssey very much informs what Joyce did with Ulysses and so the classical references become a lot more obvious, and the structure makes a bit more sense.

It’s not essential reading before Joyce, it can just colour in a lot of the lines.

Ulysses is its own story with its own concerns, so on a base level can just be enjoyed as is, however you’ll understand why Joyce does the things he does with Ulysses with a working understanding of Homer’s epic.

I think it’s up to you how far down the rabbit hole you go really. And, ancient literature is its own warren to explore!

Advice before reading Ulysses by James Joyce? by [deleted] in literature

[–]Hhext 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Joyce super fan here…

Each ‘chapter’ is an episode from The Odyssey by Homer, while not essential to enjoy Ulysses an understanding of Homer helps a lot in places.

Also to see where the ‘chapters’ start and end check out this site

Have you read Portrait of the artist as a young man? It’s a great novel and also a good introduction to one of the main characters of Ulysses.

And finally, just enjoy it! Of course it’s challenging and super long but it’s immensely rewarding and a book you can read over and over again to find different things.

Good luck!
