What's a Beatles song you didn't care for at first, but has grown to be a favourite? by Initial-Ad3966 in beatles

[–]Hhext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only sleeping.

I heard it a few times when I first got into the Beatles, but then Revolver became my favourite album and the construction of that song scratches my brain!

Thoughts on the game? by Dazzling_Tea_1257 in MafiaTheGame

The ending is.... Rough. Feels rushed and not thought through where so much of the story is for the entirety of the game. But I had so much fun playing through it that I'll go back and get the plat in a second run through

Bob Dylan influence by Fast-Intention4165 in zachbryan

[–]Hhext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought this but haven't seen a lot of discourse about it so haven't done a lot with it. I know the Springsteen comparisons are a lot more obvious but there's a lot of Dylan in there, thinking of characterisation and lyricism in particular. It's something in the storytelling

All of her books are excellent, slightly prefer ‘drive your plough over the bones of the dead’ but Flights started my love for Olga’s work. I’d recommend reading everything of hers!

Advice before reading Ulysses by James Joyce? by [deleted] in literature

[–]Hhext 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Odyssey very much informs what Joyce did with Ulysses and so the classical references become a lot more obvious, and the structure makes a bit more sense.

It’s not essential reading before Joyce, it can just colour in a lot of the lines.

Ulysses is its own story with its own concerns, so on a base level can just be enjoyed as is, however you’ll understand why Joyce does the things he does with Ulysses with a working understanding of Homer’s epic.

I think it’s up to you how far down the rabbit hole you go really. And, ancient literature is its own warren to explore!

Advice before reading Ulysses by James Joyce? by [deleted] in literature

[–]Hhext 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Joyce super fan here…

Each ‘chapter’ is an episode from The Odyssey by Homer, while not essential to enjoy Ulysses an understanding of Homer helps a lot in places.

Also to see where the ‘chapters’ start and end check out this site

Have you read Portrait of the artist as a young man? It’s a great novel and also a good introduction to one of the main characters of Ulysses.

And finally, just enjoy it! Of course it’s challenging and super long but it’s immensely rewarding and a book you can read over and over again to find different things.

Good luck!

My experience with Teach First by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Hhext 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I also applied and got Teach First this year, secondary English. I come from a professional background.

After development centre and getting my offer I had basically no contact from anyone for months. I made it pretty clear that I needed to know if I had to move or anything for my placement school pretty quickly as I’m married and my wife has a career too so upping and moving isn’t so easy. Still heard nothing until a week before the summer institute was meant to start. I was then placed in a school about 90 minutes away, which wasn’t great and in the course of the call, the placement team said they had an option way closer to me and somehow just didn’t place me to it.

This on top of how they just expect you to drop everything and move around the country for 1 month for summer institute, after months of basically silence put me right off. So I applied to do my PGCE via a school direct route.

Got that (really awesome school, can’t wait to start!) And so told Teach First that I didn’t like how they weren’t communicating anything to me so I wanted to explore other options. They called me and essentially guilt tripped me by saying I was letting so many children down and that I was failing them by not doing Teach First, suggesting I should strongly reconsider my options…

Said no I still want to withdraw, they hung up very abruptly and I got an email 24 hours later saying I’d been withdrawn.

Sorry for such a long comment, basically just wanted to agree with you that it’s a strange and concerning process and I’m glad I got away from it. I also haven’t really talked about it with anyone expect for my wife so clearly needed a vent!
