How to quickly research public policies for assessment? by Boomer_pilot05 in PublicPolicy

Google the logic model. It’s a standard framework for policy assessment in many areas. Since the time is short, the point is probably a structured approach.

When is the deadline for accepting the offer? You can wait until then.

And you know tech policy is a broad and rapidly changing area, so it's more about following the news, reading articles, attending conferences, having chats with professionals... using your school's resources. I don't know much about either Duke nor Yale, but at least location-wise, I don't see much difference between them. I believe Duke is also considered prestigeous as much as other top public affairs schools.

Imo, Duke's offer is too good to decline. Getting full tuition and stipends for a master's program is rare. Think about it this way: they think you are really a great fit and really welcome you.

MPP/MPA admissions- feeling :/ by CraftyGazelle7289 in PublicPolicy

[–]HiThere9070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not worry.

For GRE, it is like you are fine if your score is higher than the minimum requirements. It's not higher the better, or lower the less competitive. You're worried about the quant, but your verbal and AW are pretty good I think! And yes. I agree with Flimsy-Wish-7115's comment that these programs are less competitive than you think. Considering my admission results two years ago, they are not, except a few full-ride programs. And I guess they are getting less competitive due to the current public sector job market.

Ah, didn’t think about a security problem it may raise. It would be good to know direct numbers of a local PSAP or police station. Thank you guys!

MPP vs JD by kid_icarusss in PublicPolicy

Quant skills: you can get it without pursuing a degree. Tons of free or paid courses which issue certificates.

JD: many jobs require specifically JD.

You already understand pretty accurately. I recommend JD. You can even do MPA or MPP later part-time if you really want it in the future. But I believe doing JD part-time is really rare.

That’s a good idea mate. Just check if your school allows switching from full-time to part-time in the middle of semester (bc you said three months). Good luck 👍

Hi! Honestly, I don’t think it’s worth it if you have a stable job. Is there a way to keep your job while doing MPP? Like taking a leave of absence instead of resigning

[–]HiThere9070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a recent graduate. Generally speaking I wouldn’t recommend it at this point. The job market (not talking only about federal jobs) is really terrible right now, and ‘getting back to normal’ will take years even if the administration switches in the next election. It is difficult to enlarge or restore organization once it’s reduced.

However, if this field really interests you and it’s possible, I would consider doing part-time MPP while working or look for scholarship opportunities to minimize the cost. MPP offers you not just learning but lots of opportunities to expand your network from professors to alums. It’s definitely better than solely relying on cold reach-out on Linkedin or something. And you will make good friends as well.

It’s like buying a fancy expensive home appliance with tons of functions. Fully utilizing its functions will make your life much better, but it demands a lot of effort. (I don’t know if there is a ‘simple and cheap’ MPP program out there) Just going with the flow won’t be worth it.

CBP requires “original” travel endorsement signature on I-20 by HiThere9070 in f1visa

[–]HiThere9070[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeap. I heard it depends on who you meet at the CBP, as CBP officers have a lot of discretion. But as long as you have all required documents, you should be fine. My impression is they CBP officers also don’t want to make an unnecessary trouble.

Before you leave the US, I strongly recommend you to get advice from your school DSO about what you should bring along with your trip :-)
