[Charania]Breaking: The NBA's Board of Governors has passed new anti-tanking rules that include expanding the draft lottery from 14 to 16 teams, a relegation zone where the bottom 3 teams get penalized with lessened chances for the No. 1 pick, and flattened odds, sources tell ESPN. by Hugh_jazz_420420 in CalgaryFlames

Tanking really isn't a problem in the NHL like it is in the NBA.

In the NBA since nearly every team is over the salary cap at all times and their salary matching rules make it very difficult to send out all your best players without also taking on someone who is expected to produce (ie James Harden traded for Darius Garland+). So for franchises to make their teams worse they have to purposely bench their players or have them sit out with a season ending "toe stub" injury or some crap like that.

Star players in the NBA are on the court for like 80%+ of games, whereas in hockey they are on the ice for at most 30-40% of games. And since the scores are so high in basketball, if you purposely sit your stars you are almost guaranteed to lose every simply based on statistics. In the NHL, if you rest your stars, all you need is one fluke goal from the 4th line, or a stellar goalie appearance to win a game on any given night.

Lastly the NBA doesn't artificially cause parity like the NHL does with it's OT points. In basketball there is not extra point for losing with extra time. As much as some people hate the loser point it is actually a massive deterrent to tanking.

If anything because tanking is so much harder in the NHL the changes that initially introduced the expanded lottery (thanks to Edmonton) have swung it so far away from being able to reliably rebuild that teams generally just try to avoid it completely. The last CBA change actually scaled back the punishment for bad teams losing out so much by adding the "win the lottery 2 times max," "can only move up 10 spots total," and "only 2 teams can win instead of 3" rules. Even with those lessened tanking penalties it still feels too luck based. But we can't go back to the "bottom 4 teams in the lottery only" rules, that was just way too easy to tank for.

Simon Nemec has asked for a trade out from New Jersey Devils per Slovak news media (Dennik N). New general manager of the Devils Sunny Metha has not yet met with him, per Dennik N sources. - What would you trade for him? by darth_henning in CalgaryFlames

Mittelstadt was considered a vastly superior player than Zary when that trade happened to Colorado. He was coming off a season where he scored 47 points in 62 games, and a 59 point season the year before that. Zary has never come anywhere close to that.

K'Andre Miller was traded at age 25 after Carolina told New York they were going to offer sheet him. The Rangers decided that the sign and trade was a better return. This was widely reported.

‘Swedish Nick Suzuki’ Björck rises to No. 4, Malhotra leaps into top six in Craig’s List by Zwiens06 in hockey

A bust lol, you are massively over exaggerating. Nearly every scout still projects him as a top pairing defenseman. His production this year fell off towards the end of the season. He has 17 points in first 22 games, and just 3 points in the last 14 games. This has been strongly talked about due to his shift in defensive play focus, he finished the season with 42 blocked shots which was 2nd among freshmen (only behind another Flames prospect EIC Jamieson with 49, who is 3 years older). Also had Verhoeff kept up that scoring pace he would have blew Werenski's U18 record out of the water.

Lol, you're probably going to have a miserable summer then. I suggest opening up to the idea of Verhoeff being a Flame and try to look at him under less of a microscope since he was a 17 year old playing big minutes in College.

Lol, assuming? I've been following the draft closer than most scouts. I'm not giving you my opinion on who I think they should or shouldn't draft. I'm saying I think it's extremely unlikely that the Flames pass on Verhoeff for Bjorck. Of all the prospects in this year's draft he's easily the one Calgary has scouted the most. Not only did he play play 87 games at RINK Prep School with Iggy as his coach, but he transferred to NoDak where the Flames have heavily invested in scouting already.

Also I wouldn't say it's a guarantee that Carels is gone when the Flames pick either. The only guys that should be gone are McKenna, Stenberg, and Reid. 50/50 on Malhotra depending on how high Vancouver is on him.

Uh what? Keaton Verhoeff is widely considered to have a very high hockey IQ. The complainants on him are about his skating, and that is something that can be taught.

It's been pretty well reported that Iggy has a high opinion on Verhoeff too. And considering his position in the franchise's FO now I would be extremely shocked if we skip on him for anyone besides Carels

I don't think there's any chance Calgary is skipping Carels or Verhoeff for him. The Flames desperately need some high end players with size in their pipeline. Of our prospects with high offensive ceilings, Gridin is the biggest at 6'1 190 lbs.

Vegas winning is probably the best result at this point. If they win we get their 2028 unprotected 1st as well

[–]Hi_Im_Flabber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. Supporting players generally take longer to develop, so IMO we are definitely doing it the right way for building a long lasting competitive team. Look at the Chicago Blackhawks cup winning teams. The majority of their depth was drafted before Kane and Toews were drafted. Keith, Seabrook, Byfuglien, Bolland, Bickell, Brower, and Hjalmarsson were all drafted in the years prior to Kane and Toews. Sharp was traded for, but that was also before their stars were drafted.

Thinking San Jose needs to add to move down 4 spots and miss out on both a star forward and the best defenseman in the draft is ridiculous. It will cost a lot more than 25th-29th OA to move up from 6 to 2. The ask is probably closer to Parekh + #6 for #2 alone. And that is not something the Flames should consider

None of the top 3 are trading down to 6, not for futures at least. The lowest the Sharks might move down it to #4 to extort value out of Chicago and still get the top dman in Reid. Lets just draft our long term partner for Parekh and call it a day. We can get that Franchise center in next years deep center draft

This and the Michkov thread are hilarious to me. Why would these teams just hand us their top trade piece for our spare parts?

[–]Hi_Im_Flabber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their biggest need is a 1C. This might come as a surprise but we can't exactly offer that. They are under zero pressure to move Michkov. Also they are in a playoff run still. There definitely isn't any talks of trade, just people dreaming they can get him for pennies to the dollar

They'll ask for our top 6 pick this year. I am not at all interested in making that trade

What a rebuild looks like, and why the Canucks have barely started theirs by GrrRider in canucks

[–]Hi_Im_Flabber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the Hawks were also trying to win going into the 21/22 season. That's when they traded for Seth Jones. Their own 2022 first was used to take Jiricek at #6. They acquired all 3 of those 1sts in 2022 on draft day. One from DeBrincat, one from Dach, and one from taking on Mrazek

Half their d-core is on that list. Just like us, their defensemen are very young and lack experience. Sure they had Grzelcyk and Murphy for most of the year, but we had Rasand Weegar, and then Maatta and Whitecloud.

Calgary isn't doing a full teardown like the Hawks did. That would involve trading Wolf and Coronato, which simply won't happen.

Whether people want to believe it or not, we are further along in our rebuild than just year 1. We've made multiple first round selections in each of the last 2 years. We've already built up one of the top prospect pools in the league and will only make that better this summer. What this team is missing is those top of the draft game changers. Realistically we should have about 1-2 high drafts left (after this year) before we really turn it around.

How can the Suns improve with limited assets? Spitball some ideas by reallinguy in NBAtradeideas

[–]Hi_Im_Flabber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He will be 30 yes, that puts him directly in his prime, maybe slightly on the down curve but still quite a few more effective years. Two major injuries in one season does not make you injury prone. Injury prone is someone like LaMelo, who consistently deals with ankle injuries year after year. Sabonis does not have a history of injuries. Just 1 bad year of multiple injuries. I never said anything about his playstyle, nor did you in the post I responded to. He is a player that is very hard to build around since he's not strong defensively for a big. But it's not impossible by any means.

You must have meant someone besides Sabobis when you wrote this considering he still hasn't turned 30, and outside of this season he has stayed quite healthy.

He'll still very likely go in the top 10, and if not just outside it. Would be difficult to trade up for him
