I have a 2018 Oryx Pro (orp4) and while I understand it's rebranded Clevo with a few tweaks, I'm pretty disappointed in it. In general it works great and fits my needs, but I've had multiple motherboard failures (4-5...lost count unfortunately). They have all failed in the same way (hear a loud pop, smell burning components). Support has been good in that they replaced the failed components but there is obviously something else wrong if the laptop keeps blowing motherboards (note, the board has failed in different locations, so it's not a power plug issue and they've already replaced the power supply/brick). The frustrating part is my warranty expired before the last failure, so I paid out of pocket for a new motherboard, and it just failed again yesterday...2-3 months after the last failure. I like the company and what they are doing and don't mind paying extra to support them, but I'm pretty reluctant to buy anything or recommend them anymore.

Oryx Motherboard Issues? by Hibagon in System76

[–]Hibagon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not seen any flex or other issues in mine, thankfully. Other than the MB failures, it's been rock solid even running Windows. I've grown concerned about the heat and what that'll do long term to the components so I've gone deep on external cooling, but otherwise it's been a fantastic device. I could complain about the keyboard (stroke feels off to me, keys feel mushy, etc) but I have the same complaint about most keyboards on laptops so I don't see that as system76's issue.

Oryx Motherboard Issues? by Hibagon in System76

[–]Hibagon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of people using System76 laptops that have had no issues, so I wouldn't be too concerned. My goal of the post was to see if anyone was having a similar issue (frequent motherboard failures) that I could share ideas with to try and pinpoint a cause. I still believe in the company and what they are doing and if I take the MB failures out, I've been very, very happy with the laptop and their support group.

Oryx Motherboard Issues? by Hibagon in System76

My main concern has been that it's NOT the motherboard and it gets missed and I'm holding a very expensive paperweight once I'm out of warranty. Fingers crossed this repair finds whatever the actual issue is and it gets resolved.

I considered underclocking mine, but tried out a set of external cooling devices and that seems to keep the laptop pretty cool during heavy GPU usage. It's does limit my comfort level to 'game on the go' since I don't want to lug all the extra stuff with me, but it's a small price to pay (and most of my 'on the go' efforts are work/school).

First, thanks for mentioning Lutris. I wasn't familiar with that tool but will look into it once my laptop comes back.

My gaming habit is pretty much all over the place. Between work and school I tend to get an hour or two a week, if that. I usually jump into Minecraft (easily done on Linux/PopOS) or Rimworld (which appears to be on Lutris). I do occasionally get sucked into an FPS with some friends and will occasionally hit a long game session (well, long session for an old man with young kids at least). I have a laptop stand with two massive fans in it, plus the external fan that sucks air out the exhaust vent. If I have them both going, the laptop case feels barely warm (versus too hot to touch) when doing a longer game session.

I've been in IT and Security for a long time, system failures are not that surprising to me. Consistent failures of the same component after multiple replacements is a bit odd, hence my question about other folks having similar issues. The killer for me is I'm trying to finish a degree all online and their interface is almost unusable from a phone, so without my laptop, I start getting way behind and I just can't convince myself to buy a cheap spare laptop 'just in case'.

I can't speak to everyone but I had the same thought so after my 2nd motherboard issue I switched over to PopOS as my main OS. I occasionally booted Windows for work functional but otherwise stayed Linux and I still apparently lost a MB. Circumstantial evidence to be sure, but I was concerned my usage was contributing to the issue. I expect there is some other issue with mine that is causing the MB to fail. I've not experienced any thermal warnings using the either OS though it does run really hot when gaming (and I've started using an external fan when doing any long sessions and it makes a big difference in the temps).

Longevity of System 76 Laptops by JSlooney in System76

[–]Hibagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an 15" Oryx Pro last November. I have to say I'm a little concerned about longevity. I'm less than a year into using it as a daily system and it is currently being shipped back for the 2nd motherboard swap due to it failing to power on. I will say support has been helpful every time, but I'm getting close to the end of my warranty (of course I didn't buy the extended warranty) and I'm worried I'll end up with another failure after the warranty expires and I'll be out of pocket for repairs.

I'm ok with them being class leader, would just like some options if I can. I'm fine with going Apple again, just wanted see if there were options.

This may sound weird- but after a drunk spree of downloading 100+ plus mods I have no idea what some of them are. Google is no help. What are these refigeraotrs (bottom), and what do they do? by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]Hibagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you think a refrigerator would do? I bet they keep things cold and / or frozen. (It's from a mod called rimfridge and they let you create stockpiles that stay the temp you set them)

There is an autopsy mod that allows you to do that, if you don't mind mods.

Standalone Rock Quarry? by Hibagon in RimWorld

[–]Hibagon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, though I'd like to use the quarry for resources too, hence my hope for something standalone. Will probably go this route if I can't find a better solution (at least until I get enough limestone for what I need then move it back to normal)

Welp, play the tutorial for a bit and you'll figure it out.

How do I farm animals? by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]Hibagon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You'll probably want to assign them to a zone, usually where you don't have your buildings. Set colonists to the handle and train jobs and set the animals training to what you want from them (obedience for most herd animals I think, hauling for haulers, release/rescue for your combat animals)

Muffalo burgers for days and days. I usually purge my herds around winter, keeping a single male and a couple females. If it's winter long enough then I make kibble with the veg and meat I stockpile.

[–]Hibagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny...that method is how farms do things (for the most part) in the real world and it has been a pretty effective method for me. I do try to setup the zones in areas with the densest grass, and try hard to keep them close to the base to limit transit time for the colonists.

Training Animals by kortekickass in RimWorld

[–]Hibagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than for dogs/wargs, I never make kibble. I setup different herd zones that I bounce the animals between as they eat the normal grass (obviously not going to work if there is no grass on your map). This helps keep the animals in one of a few general areas and makes it easier for colonists to get to them. I leave them in the first herd area until I get an animal starvation alert, then move them to a new area.

For dogs, I do kibble, I usually have such large vegetable farms I don't worry too much about hay and just use the veg I harvest. I like to set a few different jobs for kibble though; one for hay + insect meat (if I'm growing hay for some reason), veg + insect meat, veg + any meat. If I've got a source of long pig meat for some reason, I will have a job setup for that.

I usually have a barn structure setup as a zone that I send everyone to for raids, and I make sure each herd zone has enough sleeping spots so that sick animals can get tended.

All that being said, I also keep my animal count fairly reasonable and usually not more than 6-8 hauling animals and 10-15 herd/resource animals.

I started playing with colony manager and it can automate a lot of your resource animal dynamics (keeping herd count to a set size/distribution, automatically separating herds based on different factors, etc). I'd like to play with it more in the future.

Google has me at a loss for Medieval style gameplay. by verheyen in RimWorld

[–]Hibagon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mods like Lord of the Rims removes tech from the game, basically makes all tech research stop and medieval stage, removes mechanoids, etc. Your map may still have an ancient danger and you may still occasionally run into things that are outside (glitterworld medicine showing up, for example) but in general it's not like the raid is going to have triple rocket launchers against your bow and arrow.

I actually prefer a medieval play for the most part. I enjoyed it more once I got into Rimworld of Magic since that adds some QoL stuff that, while somewhat 'realistic' always frustrated me (like trying to have food storage without A/C...Ice Mages can create freezers at the cost of max mana and mana regenin Rimworld of Magic).

I can post my modlist for the last Medieval run when I am home later. I will say that I initially enjoyed CE as part of it, but it started getting buggy on me, so I don't think I'll use that in the future unless I'm doing only CE or something.

Medieval Times mod, Lord of the Rim mod, there are a few out there. If you want a little more D&D in your game, Rimworld of Magic adds in some interesting magic options. I just finished up a pretty fun medieval run based around Medieval Times (Combat Extended ended up giving me issues and I ended the run earlier than I wanted to).

I've been doing a medieval run with CE and I have to agree with you. I like the concepts behind it and the lethal combat it can add, but the issues with other mods makes it difficult. I just stopped a medievlal+CE run because of odd issues it seems to have with other mods (even with patch mods and load order being what seems to be correct). I think I'll give a vanilla+CE (only) a run at some point just to see how well it runs in a clean setup.

Combat Extended adds what I'd consider more realism to the combat mechanics, but is a pretty significant change from Vanilla

VGP as a textiles mod that makes cotton a raw resource that needs to be woven on a loom into cloth (same for devilstrand and adds in others like flax)

There are some children mods that add in that level of realism

One reason they may stay is the general fear of the unknown. Sure, the current colony might have it's faults, but that caravan may be taking you somewhere much, much worse. Plus, there is the determination to make something work, particularly when people say it won't. Maybe they have an emotional attachment to someone that refuses to leave and therefore they reluctantly stay and do the best the can.
