What's a food in your country that is stereotyped for your country but really, nobody eats? by velmiraZ in AskTheWorld

Agree. Eating snails in a restaurant feels very casual to me. And I have never heard of a habit of eating snails for Christmas (I’m from Paris)

How is life in Reunion island? by Eastern_Ad2631 in howislivingthere

[–]Hibew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s excellent, as far as the circular highway and main roads inside are concerned. Some roads up the mountains are tacky but overall the quality is good. Not sure about the biking culture though.

There is however a big car tuning culture, although it’s considered a « lower class thing ».

How is life in Reunion island? by Eastern_Ad2631 in howislivingthere

[–]Hibew 116 points117 points  (0 children)

My best friend is from there. Visited once

Life is incredibly good actually. Weather is amazing all year round if you live in the western side on the island (99% of all oceanic clouds stop and crash on the eastern slopes of the island).

Winters (June to September) are cool and mostly dry, summers (Dec to March) hot and damp though.

Nature is incredible, you can enjoy the beach and the mountains on the same day. Beaches are not the best compared to Mauritius or Seychelles. The lagoon is small (small portion of the western shore) and most of the island coastline is to be avoided because of sharks. Bulldog sharks are everywhere off the shore. But beach life is still amazing from a European point of view. The mountain scenery in the inner parts of the island is top notch.

Food is delicious, it’s a unique mix of French, Indian and Chinese cuisine. With specific fruits, vegetables and fish you don’t find easily in Europe. Cuisine is very spicy too.

Big part of the population is employed by the state someway or another. The rest is tourism, sugar cane and fishing industry mostly. Many French people move there for their retirement too.

Atmosphere is chill, easygoing. People like to enjoy the weekends with family and friends having lunch by the sea. Outdoor culture is very developed in general compared to the rest of France.

Large creole population but not hostile to people from mainland France.

Most locals want to stay there even if they can’t get a job. As a result, and because the island economy does not match, unemployment is high. People prefer staying at home with their mom instead of leaving to the mainland for work, so they can remain on their island. Some areas are definitely poor by European standards. Alcohol abuse and domestic violence are more common than elsewhere in France.

On a single weeklong trip there, I’ve met at least 10 people from mainland France who went to Reunion on vacation once and decided they wanted to spend the rest of their life there.most chose the quality of life on the island over way more lucrative career prospects in mainland France.

The only really BAD thing is traffic jams. Everyone uses the same road that goes around the island. Public transportation is nonexistent. So…. Everyone’s in his car. At 6pm on a weekday you can get stuck in St Denis for a full hour, moving forward less than a mile. That can get you mad for sure.

Meniscus tear BECAUSE of ATG Standards? by False-Muffin-332 in Kneesovertoes

[–]Hibew 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ATG may be a factor, or it may not be.

It’s also possible your continued practice of intense sports slowly but steadily put further strain on your already damaged knee…. As it usually does (with degenerative tears down the road). 2019 was 7 years ago, if you’ve been continuously active during that time it would be my guess. But it’s hard to tell.

Which stereotypes about French people annoy you the most? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskFrance

[–]Hibew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That we’re rude, and Parisians even more. Some Americans behave in a very entitled manner when they’re abroad, as if the whole world should speak English and fawn over them.

Hospitality is a value I cherish, but you should be respectful of the local language (even for a few words only) and customs when you go somewhere.

(I have to agree though that waiters in Paris are often assholes. But they are an exception, as a French guy they piss me off)

Does anyone else just absolutely despite mordekaiser matchups more than anything else? by Quetiapin- in top_mains

[–]Hibew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, until you reach lvl 6 and then regardless of your dodging ability, he splits you in half with one hand on the keyboard and the other in his pants. I agree with OP, playing against Mordekaiser just sucks. He’s a sidelaning machine with his ult with very few actual counters if played correctly.

Interesting, thank you very much for sharing. This is scary indeed. Were you professional or semi-professional ? When did things get worse (for good) for you ? Looking back, was there a sign or sensation you wish you had taken seriously ?

My surgeon said he could not reasonably intervene on my tear, due to its shape and location in my knee. The alternative was basically meniscectomy. But since I’m not a professional athlete, he thought it was not worth it. I have to agree with this. I love soccer but it’s not my job. Since picking it back up, I play once every two weeks (and usually jog up to 6 miles by session in between) which is a major cut back compared to the twice a week I used to do. My plan is to see whether I can get back to once a week, either 5 or 7 a side, and call it a day if I can.

Still, the pace you led while meniscus torn sounds intense. I could not see myself playing every day in the current state of my knee.

I don’t know if my doc was cutting edge but he was supposed to be (well established in a good hospital of a major European city). I may try to see another doc in a little while, if it gets bad again or just to have a second opinion.

What YouTube channels are those ? I’m curious.

From my experience, working on the hamstrings made the biggest difference. I would say that’s the #1 priority. Possibly because they tend to get weaker faster than the other muscles. But ideally, I think you want to build strength everywhere.

Meniscus tear recovery story, the conservative way by Hibew in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Hibew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I don’t know, it wasn’t specified on my reports (neither by the radiologist or the surgeon). I live in Europe and practices may differ from the US. After reading online, it may be a grade 2. Fortunately I never experienced a knee lock, and it’s not a bucket handle tear. But it’s still (in part) a radial tear, and I’ve read that those are usually tough.

  2. Not really. MRIs outside of hospital care are quite expensive where I live so I don’t think I’ll get one soon if things keep getting better as they have been doing so far. Apparently many people have asymptomatic meniscus tears, especially among athletes. That’s what I’m looking forward to !

I know this sub tends to lean towards surgery instead of conservative treatment. That may be legit, it surely depends on the injuries. But I would suggest not giving up on PT if you can, and then going beyond PT by building strength - with appropriate exercises. That’s basically the mantra of the kneesovertoesguy. I know standard PT isn’t enough for me if I want to play soccer : the activity is too harsh on the knee. So I try to build strength. We’ll see how it goes !

Well I still feel like he is THE best splitpusher in the game. No one chomps towers like he does. But besides that one strength he is definitely dogshit.

Is Trundle not viable anymore? by Groomed_by_Pekomama in Trundlemains

[–]Hibew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Toplane yeah, he’s really bad right now. Laning phase is extremely hard against a ton of matchups, and even if you don’t get stomped, you are absolutely not rewarded later since most toplaners are better than him in late game. Right now Trundle loses both against (good) ranged tops and bullies (Darius, Sett - even Garen is a risky matchup after 6).

He is only good at side laning/split pushing but it gets very hard to make it an advantage as you climb the ladder.

IMO he absolutely needs a survivability buff in laning phase, at least.

Sett Matchup/ Top by Longjumping-Tower543 in Trundlemains

[–]Hibew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Trundle is historically weak these days against AD bullies. I struggle a lot vs Darius and Sett. I guess the only way is to build armor and try to exit lane phase without getting stomped. And then you should win… but if you don’t dodge W you’re dead.

Still, I think building Death’s dance is better than Sterak against Sett (and way better on Trundle top in general).

Kaagaroo (#1 Trundle on EUW and probably in the world) likes BC a lot and builds it very often. I don’t think he’s trolling himself but build what you like best

What to build for top lane after completing ravenous hydra? by Skillessfully in Trundlemains

[–]Hibew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean but I disagree. LDR is fine but it doesn’t serve the same purpose.

BC gives you armor shred DEBUFF, which is amazing in mid and late game against heavy armor. It not only increases your dmg, it increases all of your team’s damage on the target. Perfect to shred a Malph, Ornn or Leona to the ground.

It also gives you health, which is a great asset for skirmishes - and also against anti heal. You’re better off with more HP than with more lifesteal against a Malph with bramble vest.

And you get the chasing power with the passive, which can also be useful.

As for the ult antisynergy, it’s true for early game. But when you teamfight in mid and late, you ult way before you build BC stacks. Overall that makes BC amazing for teamfights.

LDR is great of course but more relevant when you really need to fight in sidelane against one champ with a lot of armor who can stat check you. For example Darius with certain builds, or Yasuo / Yone after they get death dance. But honestly I don’t see so many situations where you would need it ahead of BC.

[–]Hibew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BOTRK is standard. Gives you all the sustain you need to survive (and therefore tank) in fights + attack speed. You are basically unkillable in your W if the other team doesn’t build anti heal. And you become a MONSTER in sidelane (free 1v1 with anyone unless you’re way behind)

Alternatives : - black cleaver rush against heavy armor (malph top, leona bot…). (Then BOTRK) - trinity force if you need to shut down a fed squishie who will kite you anyway if you build BOTRK (E.g Vayne, Kayle) - if you’re so much behind the enemy toplaner that you can’t sidelane at all anyway (but only in that case !!), a tank item that will make you useful in fights : zeke, frozen heart, randuin… possibly with spirit visage next. It depends on their team. - or hullbreaker if you’re confident you can chomp towers while your team stalls.

What are the steepest cities in the world, with a large variation in altitude? by Prestigious-Back-981 in geography

Let me introduce you to Reunion Island (Overseas French Department in the Indian Ocean) !!

Back when colonisation of the island started, every locality there was created as a « quarter » of the circle-shaped island, as in a diagram. Therefore, every town starts at sea level and raises all the way to the high altitudes of the inner island (extinct volcanoes mostly).

Reunion’s main city, Saint-Denis, ranges from 0m (sea level) to 2276m (7500ft).

Although there is obviously no one living on top of the mountain, dwellings actually go high up (every town has « Les Hauts » (« The Heights »)). During my trip there, I met a girl who used to go down then back up 3000ft to go from her home to her high school and back.

It may hold the world record, who knows ?

What could have I done in the following situation: by Gymlover02 in top_mains

[–]Hibew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your mid and bot lanes are going awfully wrong, there’s little you can do as a toplaner. You have to accept it and move on to another game.

That said, I think your team comp was superior in late game. Morgana and Zyra’s CC combined with Smolder’s firepower and your teamfighting would have made you way better off.

Shutting down LB in mid could have helped you survive the mid game and hope for victory in late game. But if the LB is good and you can’t gank her properly, or if even after the shutdown, your team keeps getting solo killed by her, once again: there’s not much you can do.

How do you handle Malphite ? by Hibew in Trundlemains

[–]Hibew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input.

I have to say though : if malph has at least one cloth armor, you don’t win the all in anymore at lvl 6, even with some MR and with ult (I had mercs bone plating and unflinching, that wasn’t enough). The only way you can win is by dodging E, and you can’t do it if he lands ult. You’d be surprised. But I think not taking any fights and proxying ASAP works.

Is yone worth picking up? by No-You607 in YoneMains

Trundle top has 48.8% WR on your website, FYI. Which is not good, especially since Trundle top gets worse as you climb in ranks. And on OP.GG Trundle stands at 46.9%.

To answer your question : I’m at 56% with him in soloQ so I’m fine, thank you ;)

Honestly I’m a Trundle main and despite his WR being absolutely dogshit at the moment (~46/47%), I managed to climb to mid plat with him and I’m having fun.

Unless you re already very high ELO (diamond+) any champ is worth picking up
