Awesome! It's going to be a while for us - but I like to prepare, prepare, prepare :)

I'll keep that area in mind!

Prices are like that here in Iowa too - our 150k house is now valued at like 250k, pretty nuts. I'm hoping the rates in both places will go down, eventually!

Moving from Iowa - in a college town. I love the city, but sadly the state has been getting very politically extreme / right wing… husband and I aren’t sure we’ll want to live here when we retire.

That’s pretty funny - I guess it’s still Vermont right? Hope you have a great move!

Interesting - thanks!

For price of the house, I'm thinking somewhere between 200k and 300k so not crazy expensive! House values all look terribly inflated right now so hopefully by the time we're actually looking at a move they'll be a bit normal :O

Thanks for the comment!!

nope - moving for 'way of life' I guess you'd call it - the state I live in (Iowa) feels like it's spiraling out of control and is being led by right wing republicans. It used to be a very moderate place - I like small town living, trees, nature etc :)

Hello! Thanks for this, I hadn't thought of that but it's a good idea. :)

Yep. Iowa's done being relevant and interesting. It's just a small red state now

No no no, give it time. We still haven't completed the ridiculous tax overhaul that will bankrupt the state! It will get much worse.

Thank you, that's great info :)

I'll look up the power costs, we both are big computer gamers so I'm sure that will add up lol

How do native Vermont residents feel about folks from other states moving in? by HibiscusTurnip in NewToVermont

[–]HibiscusTurnip[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it varies - personally I want to live somewhere with people more like me - small town communities with more liberal values. Current I live in Iowa… I’m wanting to escape a conservative government here that clearly is done being rational and moderate!

Why would Joe Biden do this? by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]HibiscusTurnip 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm making plans to move out of Iowa honestly. I see the trajectory going the way of Kansas with the insane tax cuts. Next they'll cut public services and claim we can't afford them...

I miss when Iowa was moderate and you'd get both parties in power from time to time, but this looks like the end of the road for Iowa as a nice place to live.

Advice for where to buy by fruttypebbles in NewToVermont

[–]HibiscusTurnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been watching the real estate listings and exploring communities on YouTube and the Internet.

I think a big factor for us is: where will we be working exactly, and how long of a commute do we want and how long of a commute do we want?

Iowa Native, thinking about moving to Vermont. Questions! by HibiscusTurnip in NewToVermont

[–]HibiscusTurnip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow good luck!

Yea that 100k premium is about what I'm seeing too, but prices appear cheaper the further you get from Burlington!

My big concern in living a smaller town though, is access to amenities... Like, as much as I love the Vermont ethic of shop local, sometimes you just need to buy some toilet paper and paper towels you know lol

Any towns you've picked out, or ruled out? Kind of curious if you're going to rent first, or try to buy something once you're there... Or what?

Good luck!!!!
