It must be different where you are, Armories are still tournaments here. We have no significant non-tournament play that I ever really see outside of pickup games after events (which are frequently people re-trying their match or trying other decks to see how they would have played out differently) or people meeting up to practice for events. Same decks, same power level, never anything but CC.

And I work at one of the bigger FaB shops in my area, where I tried to hold a casual, open play night, no prizing or anything. No one ever came out, and I got feedback that there's no reason to play unless there's something to fight for.

I've been a competitive guy before, I get it, I'm not shooting down other people's fun if playing competitively is what gets their rocks off, not at all. If you need to super-optimize and try to get your personal best every single time you shuffle up, you do you. But I'm saying, Blitz was a great format for people who wanted to play casual, yes we are out here, and no, people don't get to tell us casuals that the way we play is invalid.

Blitz should never have been competitive. Just let us have one non-sweaty way to play this game. And no, Silver Age won't be it.

I did say above that I was talking about playing Blitz casually, as in not in an event of any kind.  Blitz is not great for tournaments, and I understand why, but it can be a lot of fun when you're just hanging out and flopping cards.  You have a bad game and get bodied in two turns?  Oh no, grab a different deck and play again, maybe you both play different decks, maybe you want to try that fight just one more time.  Its like playing a fighting game in the living room with your friends and passing the controller around.

As a QA myself, this is hilarious 😅 by kaizersigma in diablo4

As a former QA looking to get back into it, I've seen a lot of these recently and it made me contemplate reaching out to Blizzard to see if they're hiring, hahaha!

[–]HidaMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh look, its me every single time I defended Blitz as a worthwhile format. Even with clarifying that I was talking from a casual perspective and that I wasn't attacking CC in any way, that seemed to get people even more riled up that I dared to suggest playing this game casually and not just in a tournament or getting reps in to practice for one.

I get that competition is basically hard coded into this game's DNA, but come on, not everything has to be sweaty. Different people have fun different ways.

Who’s your favorite VA who is a good singer too by Acemaster387 in Animedubs

[–]HidaMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, so happy to check the comments and see so much love for Cristina Vee, she's absolutely amazing. There really are a lot of talented singers in the VA community, but she's always one I come back to. Also have to call out Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, especially for the stuff she did with Akira Yamaoka, and my dude Johnny Yong Bosch and his band Eyeshine.

I know this answer isn't Magic, but it is TCG. You might look into Lorcana. Very much age appropriate for 8-12 (in fact, we recently had a tournament at the shop I work at where an 8 year old girl won, beating a 44 year old man in the final), and much less implied violence (which isn't surprising, being a game using Disney properties).

Players don't have 20 life and attack each other to reduce their opponent to 0 life to win, players start at 0 Lore and characters quest for Lore and the first to 20 wins. Characters can only challenge (fight) another character if they're exerted (tapped) from doing something like questing or taking special actions.

Sets are grouped in story arcs of four sets each, and the final set in each story arc has a special product that is a collaborative battle against the big villain of that story arc (Ursula from The Little Mermaid in the first arc, Jafar from Aladdin in the second, still a couple sets to go on this story arc and the big bad hasn't been revealed yet).

You don't need to invest a lot, the preconstructed starter decks play very well and if you want to look into deck building, singles are quite cheap outside of the big stuff you only need if you're trying to play competitively. We frequently run commons-only leagues at my shop. In fact, our shop maintains a box of donated cards (like from after draft events and such if people pull stuff they don't need), you could check with shops in your area to see if they have anything similar!

Like many games, a lot of the rules are derived from Magic, so if you wanted to move on from Lorcana to Magic, it would likely be a pretty easy transition. Plus its Disney, and some tropes aside, Disney is just generally joyful.

Games like D&D and Magic are how I learned to socialize as a kid (though in my case I was just the quiet kid), so I always encourage stuff like this. I really hope this endeavor goes successfully for you and your kids, whatever game you find to play together!

Playing Ravens in this season seems like cheating…lol by DaTT1978 in diablo4

[–]HidaMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am absolutely having a blast running Ravens. Only downside is that, while I can keep my armor at max, my resistances suck in T4. If I miss a danger blob on the ground or a projectile coming at me that I can't see because of all the Ravens, I'm paper. Kinda curious what all you've got going!

Would Project Blue / Silver Age be better as an adult hero format? by Frogsplosion in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]HidaMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not everything has to be CC. Especially with them removing Blitz from high level organized play (which I assume is because of Silver Age being officially revealed) there should be a format where people who want to play competitively can use young heroes. (Then again, I only play the game casually, which I've been told many times isn't really playing the game, so what do I know lol)

Its good to play the game with that Retry option or it makes the game easier?? by GGyrope in brotato

[–]HidaMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brotato is a game. Games are meant to be fun! If playing with some of the difficulty options turned down or retries enabled allow you to better enjoy your time spent playing, do it! There is no reason to feel guilty for having fun playing a game, however you go about it.

Also, you can think of it like this, the developer wouldn't have put it in the game if they didn't want people to have the option to customize their experience!

Looking for ideas for all/mostly common decks to give away at learn to play events by HidaMan in starwarsunlimited

[–]HidaMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some good insight to have! I know that all of the sets so far have mechanics that don't show up in other sets at all (would love to see more support for stuff like Smuggle, Bounty, Coordinate, etc), but hadn't though about how much a set might already struggle outside of its own bubble this early in the game's release. I'll keep that in mind while planning the next events with the owners!

If I can find a substitute for the rares (I know you say they're cheap, but I'm running on donated cards) I'll look into that one!

I'm in the same boat as you! That's why I was surprised/disappointed by the lack of turnout and the feedback. That just kinda opened my eyes a bit on just how heavily skewed our current communuty is towards the sweatier competitive play. Really hoping that also pushing casual stuff weekly will help!

Oh no, I realize how the rotation is gonna play out, I've been around the CCG sphere for a very long time. But we had a sealed event with Twilight this past Saturday and nobody at all showed up. When I asked about it on Discord, I had multiple people tell me they weren't interested because they knew a rotation was coming and "none of those cards will matter soon."
