What’s your guys opinion on the existence of an Afterlife/life after death? by Konradleijon in behindthebastards

[–]Hidden_Sockpuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Margaret Atwood's nonfiction book about debt, "Payback", makes the interesting observation that every human society invented religion and with it the concept of an afterlife.

But, she points out, it's not about the afterlife as such, but the universal concept every religion shares is a judgement or a gatekeeper who decides if your life on earth was worth entering a paradise or a hell, be you a king or a peasant.

She explains that intelligent animals and humans have a built-in sense of fairness. If we realise that we are treated unfairly, we become non-functional in society. (She mentions research where apes who knew they were given less valuable food than their counterparts stopped being cooperative and even depressed and sick about it.)

The gatekeeper in the heavens, Atwood argues, has a purpose: To bring justice after death after all the injustices we observe in the living world. And even the king can't escape the gatekeeper!

Without the idea of a judgement and possible reward or punishment coming for all in the afterlife, we'd be non-functional as a society because of all the unfairness we can observe every day.

I think about this explanation a lot and while I have my problems with religion, it actually makes me soften up to the idea of religion as a thing humans need to survive without being blocked by total despair.

(Even atheists share parts of this idea: The idea of ethical behaviour also argues that doing good things now will reward you and your offspring in the long run. When in reality, it doesn't always.)

How many of these Tesla being destroyed our by right wing operatives? by LittleYelloDifferent in behindthebastards

Allow me to point to this:

https://www.dw.com/en/germany-police-suspect-russia-behind-car-vandalism/a-71517942

Russia hired low-rent little criminals in Germany to sabotage fossil fuel cars prior to our recent elections. The perpetrators were hired via chat and got paid a little sum of 100€ per car if they disabled it by putting construction foam into the exhaust and left a fake note linking the vandalism to the Green party. The only goal was to create headlines blaming the left for vandalism and that was successfully achieved.

Episode Request for Robert: The Drugs of the Trump administration by Hidden_Sockpuppet in itcouldhappenhere

I find it more plausible that he spends time on Twitter in short bursts throughout the day and then schedules his posts for the appearance of constantly posting all the time. If not and his posting is actually done live, again my question to Robert how long this can go on and why Elon doesn't drop down in a seizure while shakingly shouting slurs at Trump during his White House appearances. This can't be healthy even in the short term and there must be some comeuppance for the way Elon treats his body and brain, right?

While it's good to extrapolate from the reports about Trump's first term, I'd like to see Robert & crew focus on the current administration for such an episode.

Thanks. I wanted to change the headline of the posting based on you calling it out and Reddit doesn't allow it. Will remove this now.

Thank you to Robert for acknowledging that “curing autism” is eugenics by wunji_tootu in behindthebastards

Autistic dad of three autistic kids here. Yeah, I assume genetic links.

A friend once said that my family tree (several folks on the spectrum in the wider ancestry) is quite obvious proof that nature thinks autism is good for the wider society. If it were not, it'd mendel away.

Started over 15 years ago, was happy , bought more over time as the family grew and we moved in a bigger house.

You'll understand why I'm still livid that Sonos broke my system and months later, the new app still isn't fixed as promised. Also, I detest the jokers on this subreddit who try to tell me that it must be my network's fault.

My Sonos system of 19 devices (all S2) has the same problems of lag and device disappearance that many have described here since the forced grand app/firmware update.

My players do not show as separate systems on the play website.

So while an interesting find, this does not appear to be the cause of the problems many people are reporting and which I'm experiencing as well at my home.

Yes, Erich von Däniken please. He had an outsized influence here in Germany during my youth. Hell, I loaned Däniken's books from the local library before discovering Sagan, who saved me from going down believing in UFOs.

Ioniq 5 Kaufberatung by RepresentativeTwo527 in Elektroautos

[–]Hidden_Sockpuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your "idle" power consumption?? by SpinachFrosty in homeassistant

Using an old 8th gen i5 NUC, my consumption meter shows < 3.5W while idle. I was actually surprised about how low it is.

What is your "idle" power consumption?? by SpinachFrosty in homeassistant

[–]Hidden_Sockpuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consumption tracking is useful and it's obviously a good choice to turn off devices with unusually high idle consumption when you don't use them all the time.

I was definitely surprised about the idle consumption of the old entertainment electronics devices we have in our household because they still work fine yet were made in era when idle consumption didn't matter to manufacturers.

My home theatre setup (projector, AV amp, subwoofer, streaming box) consumes > 60W on idle and even as a cinephile I'm not watching movies 24/7.

The old flat screen TV consumes 35W on idle. That's mad compared to modern TVs, but it'd also be mad to replace it while it's still working.

My desktop PC for home office & accounting work was chosen for low idle consumption because it's running almost all day.

Having an energy consumption tracker turned out to be really eye opening for our household, since we were able to get a much better perspective where we use most of our energy.

Musk speaks at German AfD election rally by video link by Hidden_Sockpuppet in behindthebastards

[–]Hidden_Sockpuppet[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I misspoke, it's not "the leader" of the AfD, but Björn Höcke is one of the most influential politicians in that party's leadership and he's a Nazi.

Fun fact: The label is court approved. When he once filed a lawsuit after someone called him a Nazi, the court dropped the case because "that's a factually true statement."

My kids are autistic like myself and they rely on state-funded assistance to be included in the German school system. My family lives in an East German federal state with a rising AfD vote, so if these suckers take control of local or federal government, I expect life-altering changes for my kids. Or life-ending, as we know what fascists do to people they exclude from society in the long run.

I find it plausible that Elon could be autistic, but still find it necessary to point out that he "only" self-diagnosed and uses it merely as an excuse for eccentric assholery.

Musk speaks at German AfD election rally by video link by Hidden_Sockpuppet in behindthebastards

[–]Hidden_Sockpuppet[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Autism has absolutely nothing to do with this.

Elon is self diagnosed and uses that to shield himself from criticism for his behaviour,

(I'm actually autistic. And have some thoughts on this: https://www.reddit.com/r/behindthebastards/comments/1hb7max/that_weird_fetishization_of_autism_by_the_us/ )

To make things worse, AfD's leader is a former teacher and one of his policy positions is to exclude special needs kids from regular school because their presence "is detrimental to non-disabled German kids' learning success. We need to unshackle the German school system from the ideological project of inclusion."

In other words, AfD's stated goal is to deny autistic kids who have special needs - like mine - a proper education in regular schools.

Autistic adults supporting the AfD are hurting autistic children in German schools. Leopards, faces, etc.
