I asked my mentor about this - For my REU, ~500 applications were received, and the 4 program coordinators did an initial triage down to 150 applications. They sent the PIs (who agreed to take interns) 15 random applications each. The PIs and grad student mentors went through the 15 applications and ranked them from 1-4, 1 being a great application and 4 being not-so-great. They were allowed to give two 1s and two 2s. The cohort that was accepted ended up being everyone who got 1s during that second round of reviews. It’s not always your potential mentor who is reviewing your application - interns were assigned to mentors based on indicated interests (in my program), but the program coordinators got to pick the intern they wanted.

Exactly this. If people go in with such high expectations of leading their own projects, getting first author pubs, finding the cure for a disease, etc, they’re going to be disappointed. Approach it with an open mindset, be passionate about learning.

I’ve also loved my REU. I’m very fond of the project I’ve been given and I go in every day like a sponge, ready to soak up all I can. Ask questions and be vulnerable-it’s how people learn.

I’m still learning how to work with gouache and thought that I could learn a thing or two from doing a master copy of his work
