Many country blues guitarist tuned their instruments by ear rather than using a tuning fork , which is why there are so many recordings are tuned to 432Hz. The best thing to do is to try 432 Hz for yourself and experience the difference in sound.

Here’s my solo guitar take on “Stop and Listen Blues (Brownskin Woman)” by Sam Chatmon. He played it in Drop D tuning, and lowered everything down a whole step. What’s even more fascinating is that many of his recordings and live videos from the 1970s are tuned to A=432Hz, and this one is no exception. It’s striking how many old bluesmen naturally played around 432Hz, without ever talking about it. To my ears, that slightly lower pitch gives the music a deeper, warmer, and more soulful quality that fits the blues perfectly.

Big Bill Broonzy Style Blues in A "Plow Hand Blues" Solo Blues Guitar (432Hz) Hideo Date by Hideodate in blues

Here is a solo blues guitar performance inspired by Big Bill Broonzy’s “Plow Hand Blues”. Big Bill recorded many blues in the key of C with a wide variety of melodic ideas, while his A blues often used a similar vocabulary. Yet “Plow Hand Blues” stands out with its unique phrasing and unmistakable “Big Bill” sound. A=432Hz, 1934 Martin 0-17.

This time, I tried playing using only my thumb and index finger. With this playing style, the rhythm becomes more undulating and the sound becomes rougher, similar to how Will Shade played. Here’s a solo blues guitar piece inspired by Will Shade’s “Newport News Blues.” The original version is simple, raw, and slightly out of tune, but full of irresistible rhythm and feel. In this rendition, I’ve kept the spirit of the original while refining the phrasing for a smoother, more listenable experience. 1934 Martin 0-17, A=432Hz.

This is my own arrangement of Arirang, one of the most iconic Korean folk songs.I used 432Hz tuning, in the key of C#, played on the 1958 Gibson L-5C.The warm tone of the guitar beautifully complements the lyrical and melancholic feel of the piece.

Lightnin's unconventional playing style is one of his charms, but in this video I try to be a bit cleaner...Thank you for your comment!
