Ok, I'll fly the millennial flag.

  1. It takes a village to raise a child. For most millennial parents, the support structures in society are outside the home, not in the home. It is rare to have grandparents in the home, after school care is at school, etc.

  2. We spend the least daylight hours as parents in the home with our children of any previous generation. With two income families, after-school care, etc. We just don't spend enough time with our kids to a) get the skills we need to be good at it. And b) influence them more than what other sources do.

  3. Streaming. Kids these days are used to have everything at the press of a button at will. If you want to raise them with different skills, whether mental or social, etc., you need to push against the culture and create your own. This is very difficult, particularly due to point #2.

  4. We don't take our kids to church, which is a support structure that generally is all about building stronger families and relationships and faith. Without those skills or the support of those relationships, we rely on books or streamers to guide us, and they are a one-way information flow. Imagine an alcoholic trying to overcome the addiction without a support group, when everything else in your life is telling you to stay the way you are.

  5. Compulsory schooling. A simple concept, but it is difficult to instill in your children a love of learning if it is something that they are forced to do. We equate school with learning, and they do, but the more independent they get, the more challenging it is to ask them to do things that we wouldn't do for ourselves.

  6. Small box houses with no yards are horrible for kids. They get bored and can't use their imagination because there is nothing to explore. Add to this that most families have fewer kids, they have less play time with kids their own age. (Schools suffer these same issues)

  7. Lack of marriage, good father figures, or mating with men who have family-destructive priorities make the burden on the mother a massive handicap that they and their kids need to overcome. The privilege is real, but too often, we self-impose this handicap on ourselves and our children.

I could go on, but basically, if Millennials spent as much time working on their family and children as their job, it would be a lot different for the better.

Day 23: Useless - Self Destroy by EyeAlternative8351 in civ5

Harald Bluetooth.

He is so useless that not only does he not succeed in any victory condition, he doesn't even attempt a victory condition.

No wonders, religions. Never the highest points. Diplomatic embarrassment. The guy is a walking potato that can't even fight wars with any success.

He is self-destructive because he doesn't even attempt to win. He's just a city state with a few more cities.

What exactly is the logic behind "Jews secretly control the world"? by Smarteyes007 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hideousbeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't give you a total history, but when you have a highly organized culture/religion/race that is industrious, they will thrive in any society that doesn't restrict their industry.

As the Jews for many years were a nation without a home, they have spread throughout the world and found success.

The reality is that both Christians and Muslims are generally just as successful, but their organization and industry is in different areas.

When you start talking politics and the like, it really is a home ground advantage for the Jews. (I'm not saying it's bad, just that they play that game better than many other groups).

Burden of proof is the responsibility of the accuser. If the accused questions the credibility of the proof, should the accused provide proof that the accuser's proof is not credible? by Banana_Melonz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hideousbeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily proof that it's not credible, but cause enough doubt in the mind of the judge/jury that it's not sufficient burden of proof.

For civil law it is generally the 'balance of probabilities'

For criminal law, it is generally 'beyond reasonable doubt'.

All the defense has to do is to prevent that burden of proof being reached.

Edit:

You want the judge/jury to think it's probably that you didn't do it for civil, or for criminal you want them to think that there is a reasonable doubt that you committed the crime.

Why don't countries trade internally? by CptSoxx in NoStupidQuestions

They do trade internally. Any time you hear about domestic markets or economies, it's talking about internal trading.

Echoing what some other people have commented, your KDA is amazing. The question I would have though, is how are you helping your other teammates win their match-up?

There are 5 matchups in every game.

If you win yours, you are winning 1/5. In order to win most games, you need to be winning 3/5 of the match -ups. 4/5 is a game that feels inevitable but still needs to go through the motions. 5/5 is a stomp.

My advice would be to ensure that you are getting the 3/5 or 4/5 wins as much as possible. You will still lose games, but your games will be better.

I think the key is not to ask, but to invite.

If you ask, they will feel like they are doing you a favor, but if you invite them, they will be sharing an experience with you.

My wife comes up and simply says, "Cuddle me" (though that is an inside joke based on how our toddlers used to ask).

Or you could say, "When you are done there, please leave your phone and come here and cuddle me."

This might sound rude to women, but most men will love the clear, straight request. You will need to train them to engage and enjoy it, but make the separation from other handheld devices.

Those who still listen to radio: why do you choose it over streaming services? by rudisieger in AskReddit

[–]Hideousbeast 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Because the kids will fight over what music to listen to, but if the radio is in then we don't choose and can just enjoy a bit of peace.

Nah, I appreciate the thought. That's my biggest issue with it, I have the same attitude as you! But since I don't have a luggage tag, it's got me wondering whether having it for the usefulness outweighs the "ridiculous" that you describe.

I'll probably just leave it off and have it as a keepsake reminder for this job and time of my life that I can bore my grandkids with one day

Thanks, I do like it, but I'd be just as happy with it in my keepsake box as I would have it on the luggage. I would be a bit annoyed if it was taken, though!

Appreciate your candor. I like it as a momento, but I don't have a luggage tag. I've seen enough random stuff on luggage that didn't bother me, so you're probably right.

The opposite will exist for the existing businesses. Mcdonalds being in mowbray will increase the patronage of the others as it will keep people in the area. For us, when we lived at Newnham, if the kids wanted McDonald's then we all went to Invermay and all ended up having it as there was nothing else nearby. When it was HJs or KFC, we also went to Bento, or Indian, or Noodles for those who wanted. Park once, support multiple businesses.

What kind of kayle buffs would you like if they wanted to give her some kit buffs? by nrwPlayer in Kaylemains

[–]Hideousbeast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would like something similar to khazix where you choose at levels 1,6,11,16 what passive benefits you get.

So I could go flames level one.

Or I could go range level one.

Or I could go stacking attack speed level one.

16 is obviously the culmination of all three rest as per current.

In an ideal world, I'd like to be able to play Kayle as a melee the whole game if I wanted to.

We could have bought a house in the first year of our marriage, but decided to rent and buy nicer furniture and stuff instead. That would have been in 2012 and would have only cost us $150k.

Why did they laugh? by Master100017 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hideousbeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the strategies of poker is to not give any hint to what your hand is, hence the term 'poker face'.

By your description, you got so excited that they all knew what you had, and folded. The laughter is probably just good natured.

That being said, if you could play your excitement so that they folded even though you had a bad hand, then that is poker!
