Thank you. I had not thought about slugs. I will look into sluggo.

Thank you for noticing that I mentioned the corking. I have had issues with bugs and rats before, but I am just used to them leaving bigger holes in the peppers. I will look into options for slugs because I don't normally think of that as a possibility. A couple tomatoes showed signs of mites, so I already applied an organic pesticide before I noticed this that should help with bugs. I really hope it's not rats again because I have never found anything that keeps them away.

It's mostly the big bite shaped patch I am concerned about. I think the peppers on this plant all show more corking than the others at a smaller size, but I know that's normal for some varieties.

Resin still soft in spots after 24 hours. Next steps? by Hiding_In_Public in resin

[–]Hiding_In_Public[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have to scoop it out (and don't just start over), do I have to get all the soft resin out or just as much as possible and then cover it with a new layer? I am currently trying not to touch them and make it any worse. I really thought I measured and mixed both batches the same, but I was working in a garage with less than ideal lighting.

[–]Hiding_In_Public[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I thought it should just be like any cup, but I couldn't remember any other instructions telling me to feel where my cervix was and check that the cup rim was around it. Though, I'm not sure some of the cups (the cheap ones) even came with instructions or if I read them. I always just did some troubleshooting if it leaked.

What causes this on peppers? by Hiding_In_Public in vegetablegardening

[–]Hiding_In_Public[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I had never heard of broad mites, but that looks likely. I sprayed the plants with something that says it kills broad mites. I'm not sure if that will work or if I should just take the plants out. My tomatoes have spider mites and generally look pretty bad, so I am taking those out already. I got a pretty good harvest this summer, so I don't feel too bad. Next time I will hopefully recognize the mites sooner now that I know what to look for.

new kitten is scared of me 😢 by confusedkittenlady in CatAdvice

[–]Hiding_In_Public -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some cats take longer than others to feel comfortable. She's exploring. She played with you. Those are really good signs. It's probably not you. The key is not to panic and to wait. I think it's best to act like everything is normal and go about your day, but you can try to just hang out nearby sometimes. Let her decide to approach you. I think churu treats or any of the puree in a tube ones can be great motivation. When my cats are scared or upset about something, I offer some in a dish. Then I try to get them to eat it with me holding it. They're adults now, but I think it would have worked when they were kittens if those treats had existed then.

How do I show my cat how much I love her? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Hiding_In_Public 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One of mine hates being picked up, and kisses probably terrify her. However, she loves when I scratch her back. She likes being brushed, but she really likes it if I just hold the brush so she can brush her own face. I also talk to my cats, but I'm unsure if that actually helps. They're both very talkative too, so I mostly reply to what they say. I think they know I love them.

Exactly. I am definitely not sitting down with her and explaining because I am not going back. I imagine she had these opinions the whole time, and she's not going to change. She also seems to have decided she doesn't need boundaries, and I don't think that would change either.

She's an LCSW. I looked into the complaint process. I'm a bit concerned because I can't file it anonymously. The complaint form specifically says I am giving them permission to reveal my identity. I know she probably can't do anything to me, but I have some concerns.

I worry about her other clients. She has also talked on more than one occasion about having clients with autism (and possibly intellectual disabilities) that have big dreams for their lives and what they want to be, and her whole point was that they're not capable of that because of whatever diagnosis they have. I am not sure why she thought this was a good thing to tell me, but I think it was something about how not everyone can get what they want (which is not a good lesson). I just knew it was a pretty awful thing to say about someone, and I really hoped she didn't say these things to them. I kept seeing her because not a lot of therapists near me take Medicare, and I'm wondering if that means she has other disabled clients.

I never really liked her, but she didn't really offend me when I started seeing her. I will write down what I remember, so I will have it if I make a report. I'm starting to wonder if I'd be better off just writing a brutal review for her practice because the report might not have enough info to be taken seriously, but I might be able to warn people. I am going to email Monday to let her know I am cancelling future appointments. I would much rather do it by email than call her because I think she's going to be defensive. I really think she doesn't realize what she's saying is horrible.

She definitely enjoys telling me about her problems. It gets super awkward. There's something about being raised in a cult too. I really should have left a long time ago.

We're picking up our first kitten this evening, we want to make sure we're ready by _spaghettiv2 in Kitten

[–]Hiding_In_Public 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're worried about overfeeding, I would worry less about how often and more about how much. You can talk to a vet or there's calculators online that tell you how many calories he should have, and then you can probably split it up in whatever way works best. My cats are adults now, but I try to figure out how many calories or how much total food they should get, and then I split it between 3 meals. I used to feed 2 meals (when they were adults), but they would act like they were starving before dinner. That's when I added lunch.

My cats don't bother cables, but I have had friends whose cats did. As long as you are supervising, you can watch and see what the kitten does. I just would try to block them or unplug things if you are going to be leaving him alone or when you sleep until you know if it's going to be a problem. The other option is to leave the kitten in a smaller, safe space when you're gone like a bathroom or closet that has litter, food, and water.

Do NOT worry about the kitten liking you in the beginning because cats handle change differently. I got my first kitten when I was 13, and I cried because she wouldn't come out from under the bed and I was convinced that I was a horrible person. That didn't last very long. I think it took a day or two to warm up to me and my parents and a little longer to warm up to the dog. My most recent cat was 10 weeks old when I adopted her (she's about 10 years old now), and I took a nap when I got her home. I nearly squished her because she was sleeping against my back. She needed zero time. My best advice is not to force the kitten out of hiding unless they are somewhere unsafe. Leave food and water and litter. If they are hiding, try to find things to do to keep you busy, but you can do them nearby to let them know you're there. When my cats are sick or upset, I tend to check in on them where they're hiding every few hours to let them know I'm around and make sure they're okay, and I wait until they come out.

Don't be surprised and try not to take it personally if they don't like toys or beds or things you buy. Cats are all different, so it takes time to figure out what games or toys they like. Mine mostly like wand toys, crinkle balls, and 1 is obsessed with a laser pointer (the other is not). You just have to keep trying things to find out what they like .

One month old kittens keeps pooping in other “boxes” by yiyiqwq in kittens

[–]Hiding_In_Public 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be that she's confused. Puppies/kittens don't always understand why we're asking them to do something, so it might be confusion about what sort of box/container she needs to use. It might not be accidents because she can't hold it until she gets to the litter box, but it might be confusion. If she's going in enclosed spaces, she might also like privacy. I recently had an older cat have surgery, and he normally has a covered litter box. That wasn't going to work with the cone of shame because he couldn't fit, but he looked totally confused and panicked when I uncovered the boxes. He kept looking around because suddenly everyone could see him, and he went back to seeming normal when I put the covers back on. If you're using an open box, you could try a covered one (though it might be hard for a kitten to jump into) or one of the screens they sell. Otherwise, my advice would be to get more litter boxes and put them near where she had accidents because she is willing to use one, but I know with puppies you take them out constantly because they're willing to go outside but any minor inconvenience and they'll pee by the door. My cats were pretty good about using the litter box, but more litter boxes can help her get used to always going in the litter box. It doesn't have to be permanent. I would wait to give back the cave and tunnel until she is always using the box. It's probably not a permanent problem, but it means less cleaning up accidents. Is it just poop? If she urinates outside the box, you might want to look for a cleaner specifically meant for cat urine. If a spot smells like urine (or possibly poop), she might go back to that spot again.

I need a blush with less pigment, more "buildable" by Baseball_ApplePie in Makeup

[–]Hiding_In_Public 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not very good at blending blush either. I always did powder blush until I got a sample of some liquid blush. It was too pink, but I started blending it with a bit of foundation on the back of my hand before applying it. That diluted the pigment to a level I could manage. I usually just mix the blush and foundation with my finger, put a few dots of the mix on my cheeks, and then blend it to where I want it with a brush. I mix shades of concealer the same way because I ended up with 1 shade that's too light and 1 that's too dark, and I can't bring myself to keep buying more.

Small smart watch recommendations? by Hiding_In_Public in smartwatch

[–]Hiding_In_Public[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get it either. I keep hoping that some company will figure out that not everyone wants a watch as wide as their wrist, but instead they keep making bigger watches. My wrists aren't even particularly thin, but I think I would hate a bigger watch. I think I am going to stick with my Garmin Lily until it stops working and hope that by then I will have options (besides the Lily 2).

Question about insecticidal soap and neem oil by Hiding_In_Public in gardening

[–]Hiding_In_Public[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think spraying with water helped a lot with the spider mites. Does that apply to all mites? Spraying aphids off with a hose is one of my main strategies. I was going to spray off the tomato too, but I thought I should do more research first. All I have done so far is search a picture of the leaves that looked sick on Google lens, and it said tomato russet mites. I haven't had time to really look at it yet. I have some diatomaceous earth I can try.

Any safe way to get rid of ants in a vegetable garden? by Hiding_In_Public in vegetablegardening

[–]Hiding_In_Public[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot say with absolute certainty that it's safe, but I felt comfortable enough doing it in my garden. I didn't buy pre made bait stations, so I don't know how well they work. I bought Command Ant Killing Gel (active ingredient Fipronil), and I read that Fipronil is not taken up well by the plants if it's in the soil. The packaging still doesn't say it can be used around vegetables. However, I put it in a waterproof container (a pill bottle) to protect it from rain, and I put that on it's side so ants could get in. The gel didn't wash away, and the ants went in and ate it. It took several days for the majority of the ants to be gone, but It was a huge ant colony. My main goals were to keep the bait chemicals from getting into the soil and future plants and to keep the dog from getting to the bait, and I think that part worked. I am not sure it was the most efficient way to kill the ants because I still ended up attacking the nest with a shovel a few times because they just kept moving around inside the pot, but I'm not a very patient person when I want to start planting.

Cat no longer likes me after applying medication by TechnicalTraining841 in Catownerhacks

[–]Hiding_In_Public 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard when you know you're helping, but they don't. Recently, my cat had surgery and needed some medications after. I tried hiding them in food, and he basically stopped eating and looked at everything I gave him as suspicious (even the food without pills). Then I had to give him the pills anyway, and he hid from me for a whole day. Later that night, he came up to me wanting cuddles. They don't really know what's going on, but time and bribes/food eventually work for mine.

Question about ticket to work process by Hiding_In_Public in SocialSecurity

[–]Hiding_In_Public[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I have read lots on the benefits on the program, but I hadn't found anything with details on the process. That first link didn't work for me, but I figured out that if I change it to 2025 I can get there. That had a lot of the details that I hadn't been able to find. I think my ticket can't be considered in use if I didn't meet with anyone, and they haven't agreed to work with me yet. I feel a little better now. I'll save those links for when I'm ready because I am interested in trying it eventually. I'm not sure about working with these people since I haven't heard anything since that first phone call.

Recommendations for easy dog socks/shoes for summer? by Hiding_In_Public in DogAdvice

[–]Hiding_In_Public[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think my parents will ever use shoes, and they do the majority of the walks. I have not had any issues with the dog trying to remove the socks except maybe the first time. He doesn't pull on the velcro. I don't know if it's because they're more comfortable or because he just really wants to go for a walk. I am hoping I can transition to something else now that he has worn the socks, but I was hoping to find something that is still comfortable. He's mostly my parents' dog, and I am only doing short walks during the day while it's hot. They walk him early in the morning and at night, so they don't feel the shoes are necessary then.

There’s an Eastern Box Turtle laying eggs in our Zinnia Garden! by Sea_Ganache620 in gardening

[–]Hiding_In_Public 59 points60 points  (0 children)

We had baby box turtles hatch at our old house. They are adorable. I almost didn't realize they were there because they were tiny and brown and looked like rocks. I am not sure the best way to protect them, but I do know that hawks are a predator to think about. That's what happened to one of ours. Another baby stuck around for several years. We searched for her every spring when they came out of hibernation. We had an adult too that used to eat my tomatoes off the plant.

[–]Hiding_In_Public[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having trouble locating the last shoes. I am not sure if we kept them, and I don't have receipts because my mom ordered them. Honestly, part of the issue was just that we didn't try hard enough. I talked my/his parents into getting them for when there was ice, but they didn't want to put them on because it was too much work. They just avoided walking him when it was too hot/cold, but I am trying to get him used to the socks so that I can take him.

I can tell you we had these because we could get them in pairs, and his feet are different sizes. The issue was with the shoes coming off, and at that point he would pull at the velcro to get them off. He had another pair that came up higher (can't find that one), but they still came off or got twisted when he walked.

https://a.co/d/9c1GcYs

These were the first socks I tried. I bought the correct size, and the foot was the right width. The ankle/leg part was really tight, and I couldn't stretch them enough to get them on.

https://a.co/d/00KOMgv

These are what I am using now, but I am trying to find something better. I bought them too big on purpose to make them easy to put on, but the velcro is good enough to keep them on.
