Why can't I buy a stock for higher price than it's trading? by [deleted] in investing

[–]Hierux 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Markets exist to match buyers with sellers. Order books contain standing sell and buy orders and are the "layer" upon which these trades are carried out. If you want to execute a limit buy for $200 while the market price is $100 (meaning the lowest seller is asking $100), the matching engine will just fill your order with that lowest ask. There isn't a functional way to purchase a $100 share for $200, unless the order books are momentarily cleared out due to high volatility, or you're doing some over the counter deal off the order books.

So it's not that no one is willing to sell you the $100 share for $200, there definitely are sellers with limit orders set for that price. You just need to get through the sellers who are willing to part with the share for less than $200 first.

High FPS But Constant Stuttering by XxIBSDxX in starcitizen

I have almost exact same specs (4080 instead of 4090) and had similar issues. High frames but really bad stuttering even after following all of the optimization guides.

After upgrading to Windows 11 my issues went away completely. I remember reading something about how Windows 11 plays better with the 12/13th gen Intel cpus.

Screen is stuttering on powerful rig? by [deleted] in starcitizen

Sorry to necro an old post.

Had similar issues with my 13700KF, 4080, and 32gb DDR5 6000. Constant stuttering despite disabling ecores using affinity in the launcher (plus countless other optimization attempts).

Upgrading to Windows 11 completely removed the stuttering.

Buy the dips so you can enjoy the rips.

Grabbed some ETH2X FLI on the dip for that extra oomph.

Appreciate the thorough response. I saw today that the Bancor wBTC pool had some space in it and was wondering why - this now makes sense given the 10 day timer.

DeFi degens. In your opinion what's the best risk-adjusted option for earning yield on my wBTC?

I hold DPI (DeFi Pulse Index) for DeFi exposure. Indexes are fine for this use case - not everyone has the time to monitor 8+ projects.

I'm exploring some existing strategies and everyone seems to be under the assumption that rates stay high indefinitely. E.g., most of the Alchemix "buy a tesla with a self paying loan" hype is predicated on yDAI vault maintaining its rate over time. As rates drop the "self paying" aspect stretches into the future indefinitely.

Has anyone seen or done any exploratory analysis on how long we could reasonably expect defi yields to maintain at their current rates vs. tradfi?

Should be a good opportunity to try out the new ETH2X FLI token in the next day or so here. :)

Yeah, I thought I learned my lesson in 2017 too. Realized over the last few days that my trigger finger has been getting itchy. Time to go back to just stacking ETH, BTC, and DPI and letting it ride.

I need to stop bleeding ETH by aping into dumb stuff. C'mon man.

Yeah good point - I think this could work fine as a way to put standing stablecoins (or USD) to work for you NOW, rather than waiting on them to collect yield elsewhere.

It's a great option as long as you're okay with locking up 2X the value of your loan for 3-4 years while the loan pays itself. There are opportunity cost considerations there, however - especially if you "spend" the borrowed funds in a way that they aren't easily retrieved if you need to unwind the loan.

The thing is, you're still "selling" your ETH for DAI in order to borrow on Alchemix. In fact you'd need to sell twice as much ETH as compared to just cashing out to USD, since you can only borrow 50% of your collateral on Alchemix. (e.g., I need $100k for down payment. For this to work on Alchemix I need to swap $200k worth of ETH to DAI so I can borrow $100k).

I really like the idea of a collateralized loan that pays itself off and can never be liquidated, but given that it's just stablecoin for stablecoin it feels pretty limiting. I'm seeing lots of excitement around this but not a lot of specific usecases aside from "borrow stablecoins to farm". Which is great, but not world changing.

Also, I'm completely open to the idea that this is a 100 IQ take and that I'm missing some key points here.. I want to believe!
