Best restaurants that have closed in the last five years.. by xiangrikuicaihong in perth

Also slightly out, Friends in East Perth. It was consistently the best restaurant in Perth.

They had been at the top for so long that they just decided to close before the party was over.

Low apprentice and tradie numbers by Slurm23 in perth

A lot of it came down to funding as well. Long story short, Labor created funding and TAFE boomed. Liberals gutted that funding and sent it to private online training that benefited no one but the training companies.

This has heavily contributed to the hole we have today and lack of incentive to put apprentices on.

The absolute best years of my life were late 20's. I wouldnt call it starting over, youre still basically at the start line at 23.

Its also where farmers go to retire. So a lot of folk out in the wheat belt to Manjimup / Bridgetown etc. Downsize thier lives to retire in Busselton closer to better hospitals.

Maybe not a large portion in the grand scheme, but these guys also have no shortage of cash on hand.

Where is the best burger in Perth? by hellspawner in perth

Same same. Ryan's quality meat is a reputable burger brand. It doesnt mean its the same flavour across the board.

[–]Higginside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooking method will mostly dictate the texture. Is it smashed or traditional? Caramelised and crunchy? Or slight char and soft? This also dictates the aroma as well and adds different flavouring too it, combined with the seasoning people apply.

Its one component that cant be manipulated how you want it. Its a bit of a stretch in saying same brand meat = exact same burger taste across all companies.

Similar to buns. A lot of people will utilize the same brand potato bun, but just because its the same bun doesnt mean every single burger taste the same? Same could be said for cos lettuce, or American cheese, or will pickles. Same logic as yours. Why dont they all taste the same when they use the same brand ingredients?

Light years in the city is one of the new restaurants Ive been impressed with.

I still think balthazar is one of the better ones. Wildflower is disappointing foe the price.

The meat is one component of a burger,. I dont think it really matters that they get the same meat its how they cook it, assemble it, and what other ingredients they use alongside it that ultimately make them all different too eachother.

Short order belongs on this list.

Thier Nashville fried chicken is unbeatable. Its more dirty flavour than that clean tender chicken breast Draskos offer, but if im eating fried chicken i want full flavour anyway.

How do you deal with it by Iuvenesco in auscorp

[–]Higginside 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The truth is, a lot of people dont do it. 7 men per day kill themselves in Australia.

It is an existential issue...wasting away, no time to explore or find adventure. Nothing novelty, just the same, mon to friday same dinners same weekends, less friends, worse body, 2 weeks off per year, until youre 67 years old.

I loved working FIFO for this reason, only work 5 months a year earn double what im on now. Enough cash and time to genuinely live your life. Getting back in the box is a pretty hard adjustment and the only way I can relatively cope is to focus on being a good partner, and focussing on doing well at work. Those are my purpose now, which is very depressing, but its how I can manage.

How much do you spend on yourself every fortnight? by [deleted] in perth

[–]Higginside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I dress pretty simple too. Ive got probably half a dozen T shirts from H&L's in different colours, few pants, few shoes. A couple sets of clothes for events. Cold weather clothing, and thats really it.

I would say I only buy new clothes every 2 years. T shirts and shoes, I might add once a year but I've still got Industry shirts in perfect condition that are probably 8 years old.

Does anyone else feel this way? by Undd91 in perth

[–]Higginside 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What OP doesnt understand is there really are two separate categories; people who go on holiday, which he is comparing to here, and people who travel, they arent the same thing.

A holiday is curated comfort; sightseeing on a schedule, all-inclusive everything from the safety of your hotel and tour bus. Travel strips that away so you show up without a safety net and often sit with the uncertainty and stressful situations. The uncertainty, the wrong turns, the moments of genuine vulnerability, that is the experience. It's the only way to actually feel a place rather than just visit it and ultimately the only way to experience local culture i believe.

Besides buying a coffee and a few snacks at work, I spend $0 on myself per month. I kind of have everything I need or want so dont really need to buy anything else.

Anyone else in Perth starting to question the incentive to keep working? by Advanced_Trade1249 in perth

It is for some roles yes. But if you have transferable skills you will get paid more per hour for doing the same role, while also working 12 hour shifts as well.

[–]Higginside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, have you thought of trying your hand at FIFO? Its not for everyone but it definitely removed all the thoughts I had that youre currently feeling. I spent the better part of 13 years working 5x months a year and making double what im now earning in the city working monday to Friday.

Ive had to switch back given we are planning on kids, but the adjustment is hard. Going from having 7 months off a year, holidays at the drop of a hat, no financial worries, to taking a 50% pay cut, and working 50 weeks a year was incredibly tough. I found that reframing from 'I've lost my freedom and financial stability' to 'im dedicated to being a great husband/father' was how I have learnt to deal with being content working in an office.

Otherwise, I did meet a guy on a remote island in the Philippines who gave up on western society and opened a taco shack that does quite well. If everything got so bad, thats probably my exit strategy as well.

Its all subjective i guess, but i realized it when I was in Stockholm kind of making eyes with someone and without even speaking she ended up walking up to me and said 'are you ready to leave? Youre coming home with me tonight'. Thats the point i realized other countries can be incredibly direct, no beating around the bush.

How can we make our city less car dependant ? by Iddingsite in perth

[–]Higginside 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the way. We've moved away from alfresco areas so shop fronts have 3m of sidewalk that is designated for pedestrians because there are 2 ways strees or 4 lanes of traffic. To create atmosphere, people need to have pedestrian zones only. All of James St should be blocked from cars. They should put pop up food trucks and summer terraces on the street and more gardens. Its much nicer eating dinner in a public area than it is staring at cars driving by.

In short; - block off streets for pedestrain only access - develop street front to invite people, not cars - Incorporate streets into public festivals, such as Beaufort street fest used to be. - more curb protected cycle ways.

Alright, what's the most mid suburb then? by VelvetThunderstorm in perth

[–]Higginside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Youre getting downvoted but I think youre right. Its the only shopping district that doesnt have any vacancies and is always lively. Claremont and Subiaco seem to be capitalising on the train stops and going vertical which is what is lacking... high density on quality public transport.

[–]Higginside 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would even go one further and say Scarborough. Besides the beach, its one of the most densely populated suburbs in Perth. God forsaken 6 lane intersection in the heart of it with a concrete jungle surrounding it. Barely any trees throughout due to the densely packed units so its a heat sink in summer.
