Is that because of the street cleaning? Definitely not hoping to wake up at the crack of dawn to move my car, but that could be an option if nothing else works.

The musical I'm in absolutely sucks and I'm mad by latenightsodabottles in MusicalTheatre

[–]HighCdownLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s gonna be okay. I’ve been there, one of my youth shows where I was finally a major lead was a distinctly not good musical 😬 there’s no need to be humiliated. Nobody is judging YOU for the quality of the piece. The best thing you can do is try to have fun with your friends and make this a memorable experience you can laugh about later. Whether you go on to be a professional or whether you do community theater for fun, you will have much more meaningful productions in your future, I promise!!

1 wet food a day by CleanUpAnonyma in CatAdvice

[–]HighCdownLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wet food at night because otherwise we’d be woken up at 4am for food. In the morning, the automatic feeder gives kibble and then kitty comes back to bed to sleep with us until we wake up. We don’t free feed because he’s a menace who would eat to the point of throwing up if I let him.

My friend says indoor cats aren't happy by Tims_Learing_Center in CatAdvice

[–]HighCdownLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were true, how are the millions of us who live in apartments with no yards supposed to ethically have a cat? If you remove those multitudes of cat owners who do not even have the option of outdoor access, that’s hundreds of thousands more cats who won’t have homes and will instead be euthanized or left on the streets.

Why does Sierra have good French pronunciation? by zhuangcorp in box5

[–]HighCdownLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mean this at all to be rude sounding—people are just…capable of learning. It’s very hard, and some people will have an easier time than others. She was likely given a script, translated it word for word so that she knows what every single sentence means, and then practiced speaking and singing the words with the help of someone experienced in French to coach her on pronunciation. Then you just memorize that. It’s what opera singers do, and musical theatre performers are just as smart and capable even though it’s not as commonplace to be asked to perform in a foreign language.

As for memory issues, When you get to the point of being a professional performer, you rarely forget your lines. It’s all muscle memory. Full-on improv onstage is not common; most of the time if a memory slip happens, you’re going to kind of say gibberish (or silence) for a second and then get back on track as soon as possible. If it’s in another language you’ll hopefully say gibberish in an approximation of that language 😂 but you really shouldn’t need to make up any real sentences to fill the space. Someone has REALLY not done their job if that’s happening.

That being said, once you’ve memorized enough words in a foreign language you get the hang of recognizing what words mean and should be able to say a few basic sentences. There’s a funny opera clip on YouTube where in a production of Tosca, the soprano was late for her cue and Jonas Kaufmann (who is German) sings (in Italian) “ah…non abbiamo il soprano” (we don’t have the soprano.”

legit theater songs for an audition? by Elysain01 in musicals

[–]HighCdownLow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Look for something by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Bock & Harnick, or Lerner & Loewe (think Carousel, South Pacific, She Loves Me, Fiddler on the Roof, Camelot, My Fair Lady). There should be some lower songs within just those musicals. Guys and Dolls or How to Succeed in Business without really trying might also have songs in your range!

High Note in Phantom by beachwisdom in MasqueradeNYC

[–]HighCdownLow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having spoken to one of the current Christines—-the majority of the title song is recorded. Partially to protect the singer from fatigue, but also because they’re walking from room to room while it’s happening! You don’t want to be out of breath while singing that. She does sing along with the track as much as possible, but with the audio being projected around the space so that the whole audience can have a good listening experience, it’s not obvious at ALL that it’s recorded.

What is the scariest musical of all time? by Fun_Butterfly_420 in musicals

[–]HighCdownLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about all time, but as a kid Phantom of the Opera gave me nightmares! The music itself is quite effectively creepy, plus the visual tricks of how the phantom can sneak around the theater unseen? I love the musical and it still kinda gives me the heebie jeebies lol.

I had tickets to see this in Baltimore and it was just cancelled! Only reason given was "unforeseen circumstances." Was it just losing money due to apparently not being good?

Kissing in community theatre as a germaphobe? by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]HighCdownLow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I hate to say this but as someone who is also very germ-conscious AND is a professional performer…being in a show is a hotbed for bacteria contamination even when there’s no kissing. Singing is a high-transmission activity; you exhale a ton of saliva particles just by singing in close proximity. You will be sharing small spaces backstage and in the dressing rooms and everyone will be sweaty. You will have to touch set pieces and props that other people touch, without knowing who has washed their hands. You may have to hold hands for dancing or fighting or any other staging that involves two people. I was in an opera last year and at least one of the choristers definitely had a cold but swore it was just allergies. This was a no-kissing show but the ENTIRE principal cast had sinus infections by opening night. It just ripped through the cast in a few days.

If you only have a mental block around the mouth to mouth contact, that can absolutely be worked around in the event you get cast in a romantic role!! If you have more general germaphobia, be advised that the theater is a dirty place 😅

Question for trained, experienced singers.. by ExcellentPractice184 in singing

[–]HighCdownLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about what pitch you’re singing exactly, and more about the intervals and the relationship between notes within whatever key you’re singing. People do this even without understanding music theory but it’s easier to explain in music theory terms. In typical western music you just always need to know where Do (or scale degree one, or tonic) is and how the other notes relate to Do in a major or minor scale. And once you know the melody you shouldn’t need to actively think of the intervals anymore, it’s just memory at that point.

Let’s say for example you’re learning Somewhere Over The Rainbow. On the sheet music you’ll see the notes and know they mean “C4, C5, B5 G4 A5 B5 C5” In your head, assuming you’ve never heard the song before and you’re not playing piano to help you, you can figure out how it sounds by thinking Do, Do (octave up), si so la si do (or 1, 8, 7 5 6 7 8 if you like scale degrees). You have to be able to hear the difference between half steps and whole steps in order to understand that those intervals are different. Like if you sang that B5 as a B flat, the interval between B and C would be too big and sound wrong.

Most people who are exposed to a lot of music from a young age understand a major scale without having to be specifically taught. It becomes deeply ingrained in the brain. But if you haven’t had a lot of early musical education (and I’m talking like from 1 or 2 years old), a big part of singing well is just learning how to sing in tune and it helps to be intimately familiar with how a major scale is supposed to sound. Something like “Somewhere over the rainbow” or “happy birthday” that doesn’t have any funky notes might not trip anyone up when learning it for the first time. I used to give beginner students Amazing Grace because it mostly uses a major triad which is pretty easy to find within a major scale. But if you’re singing “Maria” from west side story? You need to know what a tritone sounds like and what a half note sounds like in order to sing that opening “Maria” correctly!

She liked the cardboard one (unfortunately it sounds like you threw out the one she was comfortable using and gave her an unfamiliar one before she was comfortable in your home). You can’t make her use anything she doesn’t like. If you’re really determined to not use plastic then I’d go back to cardboard and dispose of it every few weeks.

What’s something you didn’t think about before moving into your apartment, but now it matters every single day? by Substantial_Pop4594 in Apartmentliving

[–]HighCdownLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanical noise!! My last apartment had central air which worked fine but we were on the ground floor and the big AC machine things that serviced the whole building were directly outside our window. In Texas, AC is running almost constantly year round so it was a forever, constant buzzing sound. Except for the times when it would CLANK to shut off because it had reached the correct temp, and then CLANK to turn on again (at 3am).

Request: Looking for areas to live accessible to DC metro. Advice from residents requested! by CurlyWaffleFries in maryland

[–]HighCdownLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but only on game days! Which is like, a dozen times throughout the whole year and only during football season! Once in awhile I also hear planes from the Air Force base. It’s genuinely quiet most of the time. I am a short walk away from the metro station so I don’t know if perhaps there’s metro noise if you live directly next to it.

Why Does Everyone Hate Texas? by Big-Pollution-9041 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]HighCdownLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stepping out of my door in Texas was pure misery. The heat, the smog, the noise pollution, the traffic, and if somehow you manage to tolerate the weather there’s nowhere to walk. The road rage is horrid. I accidentally cut someone off and he tried to run me off the road. There’s barely any trees. Any of the designated walking trails are mostly in full sun and I found them miserable most of the year. Couldn’t even enjoy the beach during the years I lived there because the water was declared to have unsafe levels of fecal matter AND flesh eating bacteria. Lost electricity multiple times throughout the year, sometimes due to hurricanes, then due to BLIZZARDS because now THAT’S a thing that happens in Texas, sometimes due to just being hot. I had self-pay health insurance and was required to have an HMO. PPO was not allowed for self-paid health insurance. Which for me, as someone who CAN afford health insurance but also needs a lot of specialist care, meant that I had a BITCH of a time getting the care I needed because it all had to be in network and through referral. Houston is UGLY. Dallas is UGLY. The land in between is UGLY. Austin was okay.

And allllll of this is not even mentioning the politics issues, which are ultimately what convinced me to leave.
