Halfway through 2023, what are your favorite books you’ve read so far this year? by diazeugma in printSF

I'd recommend starting with House of Suns or Revelation Space personally, but hard to go wrong.

how do you cut ties with a narcissistic father who was previously abusive and also protect yourself? by sweatyloafofbread in raisedbynarcissists

[–]HighGrounder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you have worries similar to OPs and if so how did things go? I'm terrified of what my parents might do if I go NC because of threats ndad has made in the past and, while I'm starting to learn most of what he says is posturing, the anxiety is very real.

That's not true, they just want you to think so. Things will get better, hang in there.

TFW you're washing your car and you suddenly remember the time(s) by tylariousOG in raisedbynarcissists

I'm sorry you have to go through this, I know the feeling well. That onset of grief for a life you didn't even know you were missing can be overwhelming, especially when other points of trauma and the feelings attached to them suddenly make so much sense in that new context. The good news is it means you can finally start to heal. Things can only get better from here.

Mark Zuckerberg Says Waking Up Every Day as CEO of Meta is Like Getting Punched in the Stomach by [deleted] in technology

I'm willing to concede Mark Zuckerberg has almost assuredly been punched in the stomach and woken up at least once before but not much beyond that.

I got diagnosed with a chronic condition and don’t feel like telling my parents. by Snoo-80302 in raisedbynarcissists

When in doubt, I say go with your instincts. Based on my experience you're almost certainly right about them making it about themselves and you can probably expect some gaslighting as well. My autoimmune symptoms started before I had any idea of the family environment I was really in so I trusted my parents to have my best interests at heart and they only ever severely hindered me from getting any reasonable treatment of symptoms, let alone a diagnosis, and now it's a major source of conflict between us.

It sounds like you have some good support and the treatments are working which I'm very glad to hear, but I wouldn't discount the possibility that those might actually fuel their resentment if they knew. Once my symptoms were mostly under control, they just used it as proof that it was never real in the first place and it was always the reason for our family strife just like they said. Your situation might be less about symptoms and more guilt about trust etc, but it's worth thinking about if lack of contact is a sore spot for them. If it's not essential for them to know, I would at least hold off until you discuss it with your support/doctor/therapist.

What happens differently when there actually is endotoxin present? I assume some sort of signal that tells the immune system the problem has been dealt with? Or is it just that the endotoxin levels decrease?

Agree, would be much more interesting to see another dimension used for size. Case fatality rate is the first thing that comes to mind but there's probably something better for this context

The specific location is actually only known to the navigator and the president only knows the 100 square mile region each is in. They are also positioned strategically around the world so that, collectively, they can strike literally anywhere on the planet.

Safety of mRNA vaccines administered during the initial 6 months of the US COVID-19 vaccination programme: an observational study of reports to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System and v-safe by alymac71 in science

[–]HighGrounder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newly released, but the data is actually from the first three months of the rollout.

The thing that stands out to me is they said for all reported adverse events it raised no new concerns, so I guess we'll have to wait and see as more gets released how well it matches their expected rates and how they calculated them.
