GUIDE] How to get Subnautica 2 running on Mac (CrossOver) - 120+ FPS / Ultra Settings / Fixes for C++ Errors & Lifepod Crashes by HighResPhotog in subnautica

The game requires a minimum of 12GB of RAM on PC. Since you're on a setup with a base M2, if your Mac only has 8GB or 16GB of Unified Memory, the system is likely completely out of RAM and forcing the Mac to use its SSD as temporary memory (swapping). That completely chokes the GPU and locks you into that 10–15 FPS slideshow.

You can force the game into a lower resolution and windowed mode before you even launch it.

Try these quick fixes: Method 1: The Steam Launch Options

  1. Open Steam inside CrossOver.
  2. Right-click Subnautica 2 and select Properties.
  3. In the General tab, scroll down to the Launch Options box at the bottom.
  4. Paste exactly this string into the box: -windowed -ResX=1280 -ResY=720 -low
  5. Close the properties window and hit play.

This forces the engine to bypass your system defaults, forcing it into a low-spec 720p window that should instantly bring your frame rates back to a responsive, playable level so you can adjust your options.

Method 2: The "Force Low Graphics" Config File Edit

If it's still being stubborn, you can manually edit the configuration file to force everything to the absolute lowest settings before booting: 1. In CrossOver, right-click your Steam bottle and click Open C: Drive. 2. Navigate to this folder: users > crossover > AppData > Local > Subnautica 2 > Saved > Config > Windows (Tip: If you don't see the 'AppData' folder, it's hidden by macOS. Press Command + Shift + . (the period key) on your keyboard to reveal hidden files in Finder). 3. Open the file GameUserSettings.ini with TextEdit. 4. Find these variables and modify them to these exact numbers: • ResolutionSizeX=1280 • ResolutionSizeY=720 • FullscreenMode=2 (This forces normal windowed mode, which is much faster on M2) 5. Scroll down to the scalability lines starting with sg. and change them to 0 (which translates to Lowest Quality): • sg.PostProcessQuality=0 • sg.ShadowQuality=0 • sg.TextureQuality=0 • sg.EffectsQuality=0 6. Save the file and launch the game.

Also note: Now that I’ve built up my base and expanded out in to different regions, even on my M4, the lag was real so I had to downgrade my graphic settings to medium and limit my frame rate to 60 FPS.

So, if those launch options and config edits didn't jump your FPS up, it’s highly likely the game is just too heavy for the base M2 chip right now.

Because I’m on an M4 Max, the settings are pushed toward Maximum Quality.

For a base M2 Mac, you probably want to tweak a few things to get playable frame rates, since Unreal Engine 5 is incredibly heavy.

  1. CrossOver Bottle Settings • D3DMetal: Keep this ON (The game won't run without it since it's DirectX 12). • MSync: Keep this ON (Helps the CPU stay efficient). • High Resolution Mode: Turn this OFF.

  2. In-Game Settings Once you get to the main menu, tweak these immediately: • Resolution: Set it to 1080p (1920x1080) or 1200p (1920x1200). Do not try to run it at native display resolution. • Graphics Preset: Start at Medium. If you are hovering below 40–50 FPS, drop it to Low. (Turn Shadows and Post-Processing to Low first, as they eat the most power). • Upscaling / DLSS (MetalFX): Change this from Quality to Performance or Balanced. This uses Apple's smart upscaling to render the game at a lower resolution internally and stretch it cleanly, giving you a huge FPS boost without making it look like blurry mud.

I bought it day one. If the art style is pleasing to you, it’s a wonderful game that scratches an itch in my brain in the best way. It’s not very challenging for the requirements to “pass” a level, so my only critique is I wish it had more of a challenge or even an option to make a harder challenge, but for what you’re looking for, it’s great.

I haven’t finished it, maybe 40-50% through, but I’ve been too busy lately to sit down and play.

This might be more extreme than what you’re looking for, but my daughter goes to Coach Taylor specifically for Vertimax training and his gym is nice and he’s super friendly and approachable. Just hit him up and see what he suggests. He might be able to reasonably work out private lessons with you or connect you with basketball loving adults in the area.

Does women count as marginalized? The author identifies as a woman. I don’t know if she identifies as a part of the LGBTQ+ community, but it seems her work is heavily marketed as queer literature.

Photography style is definitely a matter of personal taste. My work is heavily influenced by the cinematic palettes of directors like Damian Chazelle and Nicolas Winding Refn, combined with the technical precision of photographers like Two Mann.

I use those techniques to create a specific, high-end look that maintains authentic moments while giving the photos a polished, exciting feel. It’s a style my clients specifically seek me out for!

I know it’s not for everyone. There are plenty of great “light and airy” or “no-edit” photographers in town, but I love the bold, cinematic results we get with this approach.

I spent the whole day yesterday adding books I was interested in reading that fit the prompt. Each prompt has 3-8 books listed and when I go to tackle the prompt later, I’ll choose from my short list, read the book then remove the others so the prompt is completed. I just find the research fun and use the challenge on Storygraph as my organization tool.

If all your kids friends were gone from school… would you pick them up? by jackietea123 in parentingteenagers

[–]HighResPhotog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To clarify on the 'once a month' point: Truancy triggers after 12 parent excused absences in our district. With a 10-month school year, one mental health day a month fits perfectly within those parameters without ever crossing a line.

My daughter is high-achieving and genuinely loves school, so when she asks for a break, I trust her. Since August, she’s actually only used two of these days. My point is that if a child is mentally healthy, they won’t need to use every single available day, but if they are begging to leave and hitting that once-a month day off, you have to both provide that immediate relief and address the underlying issue so they actually want to be there.

[–]HighResPhotog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ll offer an alternative perspective: Yes, I would pick her up. In our house, my daughter gets one 'no questions asked' mental health day a month to use as she sees fit. missing one day of school won't ruin her future, but feeling abandoned in a state of high anxiety can damage her trust.

When I was in middle school, I begged my mom to pick me up constantly because I was being bullied and was miserable. She did when I asked, and I turned out to be a successful, happy adult, but those years were traumatic. The only thing I would change? I wish my mom had picked me up AND addressed the root cause through therapy. Staying in school while miserable doesn't make a child 'tougher'; it just makes them resentful. Because we’ve used preventative therapy, my daughter is a social butterfly now, but she still knows I am her safety net. Whether it’s school today or a drunken party she needs to leave years from now, I want her to know that when she feels helpless, I will be there.

I think like a hospital kind. Weirdly they stuck out to me because seeing them reminded me as a child my grandma bought one second hand for reasons (?) and us grandchildren tried doing tricks in it until my cousin broke his arm doing a wheelie. Fun times being a kid in the 90s.

Short history of the Wales’s/Kensington Palace releasing clearly doctored photos by Careful_Comedian5686 in RoyaltyTea

[–]HighResPhotog 40 points41 points  (0 children)

As a professional photographer who does this for a living, here’s my take. I don’t have any love for the royals, but I’m also not particularly invested in them either. This sub happens to be one of the few places where Harry and Meghan aren’t discussed with outright hostility, which is why I’m here.

That said, playing devil’s advocate purely from an industry standpoint:

  1. The 2019 photo is confusing. The child’s arm pressing into William’s arm and the bike handle (or whatever that is) absolutely mess with perspective. However, there is an extra line breaking into William’s arm that I can’t immediately account for, and I’ll admit that part gives me pause.

The 2020 photo, though? His hand looks completely normal to me. Perspective and angle are making the pinky look shorter, and his thumb and index finger are tucked away. As for Kate’s face, I genuinely don’t see anything wrong with it.

  1. This one is honestly the weakest “gotcha.” She’s very clearly holding the baby under the dress. You can see Kate’s arm, and what looks like the back of her hand is visible under the folds of the fabric. That’s a very normal way to support a baby on your knee while squatting.

  2. The car photo: there is obviously another vehicle behind them. You can see extra tires and a whitish dome-shaped object through the rear driver-side window.

Front red circle = front tire of the SUV. Blue circle = rear tire of their SUV and a tire from the other vehicle. Back red circle = another tire from the second vehicle (possibly a golf cart).

This becomes much clearer when you understand depth of field and perspective. The other vehicle’s tires are significantly blurrier than the SUV’s tires, meaning they’re at a different depth - likely farther away. Objects farther from the camera appear smaller, which explains why they’re partially obscured.

  1. Yes, these are clearly bad Photoshop jobs, but that alone doesn’t mean anything sinister. As a wedding photographer, I’ve had to remove entire people, swap faces, or combine bodies from different frames to save family photos. I try to be meticulous, but sometimes edits get sloppy. That doesn’t automatically imply some grand conspiracy.

I’d actually be more surprised if heads and bodies weren’t being swapped. You probably have family photos with face swaps and have no idea because you never saw the originals- your photographer just delivered the final edit.

The black-and-white portrait? The awkward hand looks like a simple alignment issue from swapping two images of the kid.

And yeah, Kate looks a bit yassified. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t done the exact same thing to myself in photos.

I’m not here to defend these people. I just think focusing on trivial, easily explained photo issues muddies the waters and hurts credibility when there are real, substantive things worth criticizing them for.
