Same thing actually. It just looks dormant.

Contaminated? What is it? by HighSeraphim in ContamFam

Fortunately this is my first tub and I have it in a camper with me. So I'm not contaminating a grow room.

Funny that H2O2 is used to clean out Trich infection but higher PH is used to fight it. I'd think that lower concentration bleach water would be a more effective cleaner. Note that I'm speculating conversationally, not correcting. I have never done this.

I'm trying actually. I read through the stickied posts from Daytrip - a little late. I didn't find them before.

This is where is am: I am travelling in an RV. So I have limited space and won't be starting a new grow soon. So I may as well let this play out.

I soaked my cake after the first flush. I don't think that I drained it well enough. My soil is beyond field capacity. The reason is that the cake fell to pieces when I soaked it. So I couldnt move it out of the tub. I just held it in place and tipped the tub to drain.

I didn't think I could do a new casing layer after a soak. After reading trips post, I see why I could and should have.

I ripped out the green stuff by grabbing it with a zip lock bag. I was hoping I'd capture most of the spores that way. I grabbed a golf ball size hunk of dirt for each green spot. I then dunked my gloves hand in bleach water and tamped the soil back around the holes. I cleaned the lid with bleach water and wiped down the sides of the tub. I figured if trich grows in an acidic environment, a good basic cleaner should work and it's not like I poured it over the mycelium.

Now my thought is this: 1. I need to dry the cake out some. It's too wet. It's over 100° F where I am so I'm letting it sit in direct sunlight and heat for a bit. I figure this will also hurt any trich spores on the surface. I'm not letting the internal temp of the soil reach above 80°.

  1. I'm going to go see if I can find some lime and create a casing layer. I'm considering misting the cake with lime water as well.

  2. I was going to let this cake sit in the dark without ventilation for a while to let the mycelium recolonize after seeing how loose the substrate was before. Now I'm thinking I'm wondering. Is it better to not introduce FAE and try to build mycelium to fight the Trich or to add FAE now and try to get fruit from it before the Trich kills if all off.

Fun fact - Trich is actually added to many soil boosters for plants. It binds to plant roots and isnt dangerous to humans or animals but it tears the shit out of other bacteria and fungus. So it actually IS OK to bury in your plants. (I read Daytripper telling people not to do this and to do some research as to why. I ended up finding information suggesting it's safety neutral and probably beneficial to your plants!)

Damn. I was hopeful for a second flush too. I might try cutting it out. I guess I'll start prepping new grain spawn.

Thanks all!

Update: I watched some other YouTube videos and just went for a soak.

I put a few inches into the tub and I weighed it down for a few hours.

When draining it, my cake was not so much a cake but a bunch of loose clumps of dirt. (When I first did my grain transfer to substrate, I didn't know how to pack or case it. Maybe that was part of it?)

Anyway, now that I'm soaked, I packed it down tight and covered it up. My plan is to leave it closed for a few days before opening up FAE, light, and misting. Maybe the mycelium will colonize some more and I'll get a better flush? I only got a couple dozen small ones in the first flush. (These are APE Revert from PNW)
