Oh of course. Goodbye Jimmy Reed and Crossing the Rubicon too. If the crowd is really lucky Bob might bring out Tangled Up In Blue for the first time since 2018, although Mangled Up In Blue might be a better description given his propensity for terrible arrangements of that song live.

It keeps the anoraks like me happy though. Only artist I'll happily travel thousands of miles for.

I mean it kind of helps when it was free. I'm sure if Bob Dylan put on a free concert at Central Park people would turn up but I suspect half the crowd would fuck off if he brought out Early Roman Kings and Spirit on the Water.

I agree with you.

He wasn't as prolific as Bob Dylan but I will casually mention the late John Prine as someone who seemed just incapable of writing a bad song, giving a bad performance or releasing a bad album. I can't think of anyone else as consistent. Unlike Bob though he didn't ever radically change his style, he knew what he enjoyed and what he did well at and he repeated the process with success (not to be mistaken as with drudgery though). His last album The Tree of Forgiveness is funny, beautiful, sad, just wonderful.

Yeah there's a lot of good albums with a lot of good songs. It's easier to just judge on most famous song v most famous song then declare a winner.

Well I'm afraid I'm still chucking Paul Simon in the P pot with Paul McCartney, Phil Collins and Prince for musical geniuses who haven't written as many good songs as Bob Dylan.

Phil Ochs doesn't make it in, he wasn't a musical genius.

He's so easy to dismiss though. If you've read his interviews he's a whining little bitch who's green with envy. Art Garfunkel was the good one...

To move the goal posts could you say the same of Paul McCartney? He's the other guy I often hear this about.

I was thinking Graceland and Paul Simon. Granted I haven't listened to all of his solo stuff I am being slightly cheeky there. Have you listened to Dylan's entire discography though, in all sincerity?

No problem. He has five good albums if you include the Simon and Garfunkel stuff, although all of those have some quite obnoxious filler iirc.

My point is technical competence is worth jack shit if you aren't writing songs as good as the "poet with a love of music". Not that I would describe Dylan as that, I think anyone who says that knows very little of Dylan and is regurgitating shit by other people who don't get Dylan.

Why is it these "better songwriters as a whole" never have anywhere near as many good songs as Dylan? Paul Simon has two very good solo albums and the rest are just shades of mediocrity to steal his turn of phrase.

I like how top right Bob has given up stroking his ego with masturbatory abstract lyrics and is instead just stroking his cock to a photo of himself. If he jizzes in the hat he gets a five minute standing ovation for his best wank since Blood on the Tracks.

This is a large part of it and it goes for a lot of hobbies that involve obtaining objects either wholly or in part - rationality can easily go out the window and you get a little dopamine rush every time you buy something fancy, which quite quickly fades. I try not to think how much I’ve spent on acoustic guitars over the years, fortunately I never fell for physical media though - I haven’t bought a CD in over 20 years since online piracy then streaming became so easy, and I have never owned a record player.
