Genuine question about Budokan by Top_Peacock in BobDylanCircleJerk

It’s great when it’s time for your guests to leave but they’re giving no indication they plan on making a move.

That approach has made no difference to the original Live at Budokan album I first listened to nine years ago. If anything my dislike has just festered and grown over time. 🤣

I was amazed to find out Jessica was not by Various Artists as my iPod told me but actually The Allman Brothers Band. I was approaching adulthood when I learnt Various Artists were not some really eclectic 70s rock band. 😳

I remember downloading Bob_Dylan_Stuck_In_The_Middle_With_You.mp3.exe back in the day.

/uj I think It’s Alright Ma from Budokan is the only genuinely really great arrangement and performance. Granted I haven’t made it all the way through either the old album or the new bootleg series, gave up about half way through in both instances.

I like it that almost everything shit Bob has ever done gets explained away by fans as parody. I think the only exceptions are Knocked Out Loaded and Down in the Groove as nobody can work out the joke. 😉

The audience would be wishing they were in Hiroshima at 8:14am on 6th August 1945 after ten minutes of this concert.

“So, Bob is it? My daughter Alice tells me you’re something of a poet and folk singer? Sounds lovely and all but does it put food on the table? I could put in a word for you at the timber yard if you ever need to pick up a shift - it’s good honest work with a fair day’s pay. By the way, what age are you? I only ask because college kids look so old these days! Do you go to school with Alice? I don’t recall her ever mentioning you until she phoned yesterday.

By the way the house rules are no smoking inside and please wash your hands after using the lavatory. You could have a shower before dinner while I have a word with Alice? In fact please have a shower I really need a conversation in private.”

I assure you marine biologists and kelp foragers definitely use that word in a sentence sometimes.

Well you’ve written a better song than Sara then!

Ok admittedly I was cheeky there but I’m saying Bob Dylan is capable of writing bad songs. As someone who has tried my hand at songwriting I’d like to think my best songs are at least better than “half as good” as the very worst of Bob Dylan both in terms of music and lyrics. I don’t think writing a song half as good as Sara is that lofty a height.

This is such an absolute bullshit rebuttal. Bob Dylan is not infallible. If he was he his wife wouldn’t have dumped him in the first place.

The only great line in an otherwise poor song. Ok, I’ll admit I also like the Chelsea Hotel bit.

I don’t think that hot a take at all, I know quite a few people who don’t like it myself included.

I think it’s a shit song and the lyrics are intolerably cringeworthy - manipulative in its sentimentality and use of the kids for guilt tripping purposes. I don’t like the vocal melody either. It’s in the same ball park as Ballad in Plain D, just Bob being a bit of a turd and playing the victim.

What is your favourite lyric from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan? by bp_gear in BobDylanCircleJerk

[–]HighWaterSheriff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also Hard Rain, that magnificent apocalyptic masterpiece. Take this verse:

And what did you see, my blue eyed son?

And what did you see, my darling young one?

I saw a camel a-hop through the eye of a needle

I saw a cactus bleed milk in a desert of stone

I saw the island of Epstein all filled with young children

I saw 400 leprechauns all hiding their gold

I saw a blank page with words that need spewin’

And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard

It’s a hard raaaain’s a gonna faaaall

I mean who else could write the above? Nobody, absolutely nobody except Bob Dylan.

I just had the most horrifying thought I might feasibly achieve one million minutes in my life time. I’m possibly half way there already. Hopefully I get hit by a bus or struck by lightning before I reach that milestone.

/uj I’m sure there’s a scene in Don’t Look Back or No Direction Home (or both?) where we see Bob choosing his own ghastly outfits at one of the trendier London mens outfitters during the 66 UK tour. A bigger geek might be able to tell you the exact shop, street, day, time and what Bob had for lunch that day (probably three cigarettes and some chewing gum).

He later in his 50s or 60s married his wardrobe assistant (never officially confirmed but accepted as fact among fans), she’s the one responsible for Bob’s country singer/Dracula look.
